Has anyone used the 847 on FT4/8 or other digi modes on 2M and? 432?? Hal/WB4AEG

Yes and WSPR and JT65HF.
? Also recently used on GreenCube but a lot of hassle due to GreenCube being simplex and the FT847 having to work doppler shifting and split on the same band. Very tricky to Doppler shift split frequencies going up and down.
? Apart from that, very good results with SignaLink SL-1 and homebrew interface.
? However, some issues with SCU-17 data port on FT847 cannot communicate with HF due to no data output in HF via data socket. ? Hope this helps.

What Spence said,
I would add that the 847 was built back when doing "data"
communication on HF involved different "TNC" equipment than VHF, so
(I presume) they designed it to segregate the various modes to
different physical connectors on the back panel.? It is possible to
wire things together with appropriate DC blocking caps and use a
single sound card interface, but it's tricky.? Receive audio goes
everywhere, but transmit only comes from whichever jack that
triggered PTT.
Do note that using CAT to trigger PTT is a problem.? For reasons I
cannot fathom, the rig listens to the front panel mike jack for
transmit audio when PTT is triggered by CAT.?

Hi? Please find attached?the?Sound Card interface circuit diagram which I have used for the past 20 years. Works all mode all bands, and was originally designed? by the guys who wrote W95SSTV and Chromapix
It uses?the data port for SSB and the 1200 baud part of the packet? port for FM.
I hope this is of help in resolving your issue?

Oh Yes I love that interface.
?Ian’s nice design is Similar to mine which was a 600:600 transformer and 1k:8 ohm much like the pdf.
? I think I also used a 2N2222 and used it to drive a 2N33 optoisolation IC for the keying line via RTS pull-up. The rest was a cannibalised USB soundcard and the outputs and inputs tied in with the said transformers.?
? Later I believe I used a Bluetooth module and MAX232 to tie the RS232 port to Bluetooth with windows SPP controlling the slave and master.
? This played havoc with HRD due to the bluetooth ports being ignored by HRD. Solution was to go into settings and device manager and then the bluetooth comport and then change it to another port. Eg: port 5 to 6 and 7 to 8 as windows generates two com ports I believe one is master and the other slave. Don’t quote me on this but you want the slave from memory. Then run HRD and the port will work, even after reboot. Please don’t ask me why windows does this as it seems to pick up the stack once the port has changed.?
? Just an extra bit of isolation between radio and PC. Most HC-05 and HC-06 modules work as they can be configured to slave and you can even enter AT commands to rename the BT module to anything you like and also change the pin too.
Sorry it went off topic but this was a bit of additional information from memory about 10 years ago.
? You can really make a good sound card interface from mere scraps of stuff and keep the cost under ?10 or $15.?
? ?Good luck and I’m not a big fan of FT8 or FT4 as some folk seem to be running QRO….. I always used JT65HF and WSPR at a few watts and worked the world from my Cushcraft ASL2010 and from the UK to VK land with -23 on JT65HF at around 4am in the grey zone during the summer and only 5w or less from my FT847.?

I have an early FT-847 sitting on 40.680 FT8 right now.? I've also used it on 2M with no problems.? 432 is a bit of a problem as my Ft-847 is off by about 1.7khz on 432.? This is far enough away from where it should be that I have to set the freq dial to compensate.? The only 432 QSOs I've made have been during VHF/UHF contest.??
I use the simple circuit in the manual to de-mux?the transmit audio from PTT.? Works fine, just like HF.

Nice interface, Ian.? Curious, why use the external speaker jack,
given that its output is dependent on the front panel volume control
and subject to being mis-set?? There is a fixed level audio present
on both the DIN and TRS connectors, which is what I use.? The level
is perhaps a bit low, but Direwolf decodes it just fine.

The ext Speaker option is used if you find using the low level Line Input? on your sound card doesn't have enough to drive the software (mainly SSTV from what I remember) as opposed to using the amplified MIC input.

Hi Spence?
Thanks for your reply. It's funny you should mention using an optocoupler. The one I originally built for my FT-100 back then and still use for my FT-817 uses a 4N25 optocoupler for PTT Switching. I suspect it would work on most Yaesu Transceivers such as the 891.
Please find attached and you could possibly replace the?2N2222 which gives you total isolation.?
In recent times I have added USB soundcard Interface and Serial to USB adaptor which effectively?gives you a homebrew low budget version of the SCU-17?
Enjoy & 73?

Hi Hal, this is a circuit I use for all sorts of data modes, this one I made for my Clansman kit. The circuit is always the same just the wiring details change, it's cheap and easy to make. Leighton. GW3FSP.
