Couple of questions

Max Donoghue

Hello to the group,

Just took delivery of an 847. Great radio.

I'm just in the process of getting everything hooked up, CAT, digital modes etc. I plugged my signal lines into the DATA in/out jack and for some reason the radio goes into TX mode. Have to look into that. Question # 1: Can I use the PACKET jack for digital modes such as FT8 or AFSK RTTY? Or is it strictly for packet operation?

I'm trying to get into the service menu to align the shift control as it sits at about 1 o'clock when both USB and LSB have the same tone. I've tried the UP/DWN/FAST on the mic while turning on the radio but the regular display just keeps coming up. The up and down buttons are working fine on the mic, but when I press the fast button, the FAST icon does not appear on the screen. Possibly a bad wire inside the mic?? Should the FAST icon come on when activating it from the mic?

Everything else appears to be fine, showing full power on HF, 6 and 2m. My 440 antenna has a PL259 on cable, working on getting an adapter!

Any pointers appreciated.

Thank you,
Max VE3TMT

Hi Max?

Regarding using data on the FT-847 its?a little bit complicated compared to more modern transceivers. As a rule of thumb you use the Packet port for FM based operation and the Data In/Out for AM/SSB

For the past 20 years I have used this home built interface based on the following which I think credit to VA3DH who came up with the design originally?for W95SSTV?software, on several FT-847's which gives all mode data :

image.png

In improving the PTT switching and?making electrically isolated totally radio from?computer you could adapt and use a 4N25 optocoupler in?place of the switching transistor.?

?
I hope this is of use ?

Congrats on the new rig!? Great radio, but it has it's quirks.? You've run into my #1 peeve.

There are two jacks on the back for interfacing with digital stuff.? The DIN port is for VHF/UHF packet, and the TRS is for the HF modes.? So if you have a single computer doing both with a sound card, it will take some careful wiring with appropriate use of DC blocking capacitors.? The issue is that the PTT functions for the two are separate, and the radio is trying to be smart and only takes audio from whichever port is being keyed.? And just to complicate things further, the PTT on DIN is a single purpose pin, while PTT is combined with the mike audio on the TRS.? To be fair, when the radio was created, packet and HF modes were typically built into separate boxes, and so I presume they were trying to make things easier for us.? In the end, it turned out rather different.

Final warning, the CAT interface works well if you have the newer version of the radio (do a search for the S/N boundary), but for some reason I can't fathom, keying the rig with CAT takes audio from the front mike connector.? That's the last place I'd expect audio to be coming from if I key the radio from a computer.? You really need to use the various PTT lines instead, as using the mike input in order to use CAT has its own issues with setting the audio level.

Sorry, can't help on the Service menu.? Good luck!

Thank you for your responses. I don't see anything in the manual that mentions the PTT keying on the DATA IN/OUT jack. Am I missing something?

How do I go about separating the PTT line or would it just be easier to use the front mic jack?

Max

One page 16 of my manual in the section re "AFSK TNC Connections".? Check the diagram showing a 10uf cap and 2K ohm resistor connected to the AFSK TNC.

Easy to build your own if you can obtain the components.?

Good morning guys, I got may radio when it was first introduced and never found out about the update to it. Does anyone know who or if the digital upgrade part is still available and is it worth it? I have done packet with this radio in the past, but gave up on that as it appears to be a dead platform.

Thanks in advance

Hi Gerald,
The CPU on the AF-CNTL board must be replaced.? Some service-centers got them from YAESU and did replacement on warranty back then.
I got my CPU from UK and as I recall the cost was about 30$. The replacement must be done by a professional but is not difficult.
Check with your local Yaesu if they can give advise. Othervise you could ask my supplier.
Get in touch!

Hi Max

From what I remember? if you ground the?audio out (the?tip) this then enables PTT on the data port.?

If I am wrong?anyone please feel free to correct me

I hope you have great fun with your FT-847

Hi Ian,

Yes I see in the manual now you have to use a blocking capacitor on the TX audio line. That should be easy enough to do.?

Coming from a Kenwood TS-850S, I owned?a couple of FT-990's and a Mark V Field, but it's been a while since I've operated a Yaesu. Great to be able to get back into 6m and 2m SSB as well as the satellites again.

What Tom said.? It's the way many HTs are keyed as well.

I built a cable harness roughly similar to what Ian described, hooking it to a Raspberry Pi 4B with a USB audio dongle.? The PTT side of things is kind of a mess, with some apps allowing the use of the GPIO pins and some forcing the use of a serial port DTR / RTS modem lines, which of course have the wrong polarity.? So it's a couple of switches and an inverter chip to let everything be plugged in at once.? I also have a 736R, so the switches also control which rig the lot hooks to.?

In hindsight, I think I would stick with the modem lines control, and not use the otherwise-convenient GPIO pins.? I think the modem interface is universally available among the apps (Direwolf, WSJT-X, FLDIGI, JS8Call, QSSTV), where only a few can do GPIO.?

The problem with the Mike input is one of inconvenient cabling, and the sensitivity to the setting of the mike level control.? The jacks in the back of the rig are fixed volume, so you can configure the software once, and then just use it with no tweaking needed.? Audio out goes everywhere; it's just the audio in that has the problem.

I am still not clear on the serial number when the CPU on the AF-CNTL board was changed. I've tried to search for it but no luck. And for that matter, what was wrong with the initial CPU. (I admit I have not made that search.)

I just picked up an FT-847 and FC-20 that appear brand new. Radio and tuner both did well in recent Field Day.

The issue was that the earlier version of the radio had a 1-way CAT interface (computer to rig only).? See:?

Greg,

?

Thank you very much. My FT-847 is in the serial number range of 8K15xxxx so it is well after the 8G05xxxx mentioned in the link you provided.

Hi Max,
I found that an extremely easy way to get set up on the digital modes with the 847 while waiting for components to build the proper data/PTT cable was to use a RIGblaster nomic:

They’ve definitely gone up in price ($100 CDN, I think I pay like ~$70 a few years ago). But it works well. The only downsides to it are that you plug it into the mic jack (hence “nomic”) and you need a sound card (either an external USB or an internal one for your computer). My computer had a built-in sound card on the motherboard that I was used with the nomic as my GPU provided audio through HDMI to my monitor/speakers and I found that the set up worked pretty well.

Good luck!

Andrew, VE3YTP

Thanks Andrew

I tried the cap and resistor method as outlined in the manual, put the radio still goes into TX mode as soon as I plug it into the data jack. Even with the audio lines on the other end of the cable unplugged. I'm at a loss.

Max

Max Donoghue

I may just end up going the front mic jack method. I have a headset already wired and I don't mind swapping for digital modes when needed. Spend most of the time on digital anyway.

Anything special regarding wiring the mic jack?

Max

Hi Max are using a signalink ?

And you refer to a capacitor and resistor is that for the inside of the signalink ?

Did you make up the cable yourself ? One end rj45 the other end stereo 3.5mm plug

Tex

Max Donoghue

Nope, just what's outlined in the manual for connecting the audio signals to the data jack.

开云体育

You must have a short somewhere, likely tip to something else.? PTT occurs when the tip of the plug gets pulled toward ground.? If there's nothing on the other end of the cable, then both the cap and resistor will be (should be) unconnected on one end.?
