Re: No modulation on HF?

开云体育

How are you keying the rig?? If you key the rig with CAT, the audio needs to come in from the mike plug in the front.? Key the rig via the TRS jack, feeding audio in to the same, and it should work.? Similarly, if you are doing VHF/UHF packet, key the rig and feed audio into the DIN port.? For the TRS port, you'll need a resistor and DC-blocking cap to merge the audio and PTT signals; it's the same "interface" as is often used to interface to an HT.? The DIN port has separate PTT and Audio pins, but it's for FM Packet.

For some unknown reason, keying the rig via CAT takes the audio from the mike input, which is probably the least useful place to take it from.

Re: Serial cable question

?Hi Ron,
? ? ? ? ? ? To turn off CAT you just need to send 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x80 and that should turn off the CAT.?

? I’m now starting to get a feeling about this and wondered if you have an FC20 or other tuner “Yaesu or LDG” connected? Unfortunately, Yaesu made a slight error in judgement and it meant CAT and tuner shared the same part of the communications BUS. I was looking at a schematic last night (terrible quality) and saw the 9 pin connection for the D Sub and it as I suspected, goes to what appears to be a MAX232. There are lines tied together internally as would be expected to DCD etc. to DTR and RTS won’t do anything EVER, as only 2 pins and ground tie into the MAX232 and CPU. Unfortunately, Yaesu used a FIFO (first in first out) which meant Tuner took priority over CAT and neither worked correctly when the other was plugged in. I just want to eliminate that.

? Secondly, I wonder if you had an early radio that just had directional comms? We can determine this by the next set of commands. I am also doing this on my radio so that I can be sure it’s A) working and B) I’ve tested the method and I’m not missing points.

? The thought here is “we’ve made big progress”. In determining if the radio does receive commands….. it does. The CAT Icom normally means “in my opinion” that command to turn off CAT are obstructed. I’ve had this hundreds of times with Ham Radio Deluxe wanting to connect as and when it likes. It’s normally down to either FIFO buffers, latency in the command or a setting issue.

? ?I think we can now safely assume that 4800baud is the next best setting. The reason? In my experience it’s more tolerant to latency and buffer problems. Faster rates I found are great to move data but poor as stability and that’s the difference between a command sent and received. You don’t see garbage on the screen! You just don’t communicate at all. So please, for now let’s quickly set 4800baud as I’ve only ever had minimal issues at this rate.

?Please don’t think I’m schooling you but I am a real PITA when it comes to remote support and I would not make a good agent on the phone. So accept my sincere apologies if that is how I’m conveying myself.

See the video and also observe the RX and TX lights blinking on RealTerm. If you only get TX then we can safely say you have either a half duplex version, the RX line is damaged in the cable or you have a Tuner connected?

Just like before, Rats847 will connect, but has no feedback from the radio. Seems commands are understood by the radio and there is no duplex communication. The display CAT icon is still on, though.

Re: Part list HF Pa Unit

First thing to do is see if the parts are even in the radio.? You will frequently find parts not used.? If they are used it's frequently in a tuned circuit like a filter network.
?
What are you trying to diagnose/repair?? What is the problem your having?

Re: Part list HF Pa Unit

Thanks for replay. But in the schematics that I downloaded here, the components are also marked with ***. If that meens that they are selected parts, how do you know what part to use? Because there are many parts in the schematic, with the value ***.

Re: Part list HF Pa Unit

Asterisk on a schematic usually indicate parts not used or that they are factory selected parts in a tuned circuit.?

Download the Service manual, also look for some good circuit diagrams they are on these forum.

Hi , you can get a demo copy of RATS847 in the files section of this group. It works but has a "block" screen that pops up every 10 minutes or so for unregistered copies. I don't know of a way to register it anymore. WJ1I. Dave

?Hi Ron,
? ? ? ? ? ? It’s normal for CTS, DCD and DSR to go green so no worries there. Firstly we should try a test though and that’s a simple loop back test. You need to locate pins 2 and 3 on your cable. Please don’t think I’m trying to belittle you but I just want to get back to basics.

Bridging RX and TX will create a loop and when you type into the console both TX and RX should light up together. This also means if you type A on the screen you get AA. Or B and you get BB as the computer is simply sending back what you typed. This will eliminate cable problems, null cable for straight etc. it’s important to note that FT847 to RS232 is Null and TX and RX are crossed over in the cable….. I realise you know this but I just want to be super sure.

? The above step is only needed if your 100% certain the cable it null and you will need to enable echo of the port.

?Now we can send a simple command from the PC to the radio to turn on CAT. Without this command you won’t get the radio to do anything. In Terra Term after setting the correct baud rate and stop bits and then clicking “change”.

?Now we head across to “display” and change the character set to hex.

? Next we head over to “send” and in the top box you’re going to type this exactly as it’s written here.

0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 - in the top send box
0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x80 - in the bottom send box

?Once this has been done press “send numbers”.

This top command enables CAT and CAT should now be illuminated in the radio window above shift knob.

? If it isn’t illuminated then we can start to assume there is either a hardware problem or”mux or MAX232”

? If it does illuminate then change the writing in the upper and lower box to:

0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x4E - this enables satellite
0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x8E - this disables satellite.

See the images below on exactly what it should look like.

CAT O NADS OFF.jpgSat on and Off.jpg

Depending on your outcome? You can now either connect up your favourite program on the assumption it’s a program setting. You should also be able to rule out a bad cable or a straight cable masquerading as a null modem cable.

? Please let me know if this helps ?

My programs BTW are;
PSTRotstor - paid but brilliant software for satellite control. There’s nothing close in my opinion.
FLrig, FLDigi
JT65HF
Ham Radio Deluxe (version 5 before it became paid for).
WSJT-X etc
FTcat and FTbasic (contact me for links, was paid but author retired and made all his software free).
Gpredict?
SatPC32
Look4Sat (Android)
Log4OM

Probably others but nothing I use regularly.

Hope this helps..

Aaahhh…. If anyone knows how to obtain a copy of RATS847 as I do t think is available and software Informer just wants you to sign up for a link to when it becomes available.

?Good luck as let’s go back to basics and work from there.

Kind regards,

+1 for this test.

If you have a volt meter, it might be instructive just to measure what the radio is putting out on the serial out line.? It might reveal a bad serial port driver on the radio, or a bad cable or connectors.? Just sitting there, it should be something around -9 volts.? Measure between pins 3 & 5 on the radio, pin 5 being ground, or pins 2 & 5 on the USB adapter end of the cable (because of the null-modem swap).

Open Terra Term (free download). Select the right port and open the terminal. Select satellite mode on the radio. Set the switch on Terra Term HEX and you should see the frequency of the radio and sub VFO in the HEX.

I tried several FTDI chip serial converters with or without null-modem cables. The coms are 9600, 8,n,2 with or without dtr-rts activated. Seems there is no reply from the radio when connected. RATS847 software can send commands to the radio, like frequency changes, but when I turn the Dial of the radio the frequency is not changed in the program.

The serial number of the radio is: 9E180166.

I have read the manual thoroughly, and I'm fairly used to this kind of problems with other devices. For me, it seems that the RS-232 is not working as it should. What can be done here? I'm thinking of a Bluetooth interface connected to a data port of the radio. Maybe Signal link can offer a solution with their USB interface?
?
The intention is to use the radio for Satellite coms.

All suggestions are most welcome.
