Re: Serial cable question

?Hi Ron,
? ? ? ? ? ? To turn off CAT you just need to send 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x80 and that should turn off the CAT.?

? I’m now starting to get a feeling about this and wondered if you have an FC20 or other tuner “Yaesu or LDG” connected? Unfortunately, Yaesu made a slight error in judgement and it meant CAT and tuner shared the same part of the communications BUS. I was looking at a schematic last night (terrible quality) and saw the 9 pin connection for the D Sub and it as I suspected, goes to what appears to be a MAX232. There are lines tied together internally as would be expected to DCD etc. to DTR and RTS won’t do anything EVER, as only 2 pins and ground tie into the MAX232 and CPU. Unfortunately, Yaesu used a FIFO (first in first out) which meant Tuner took priority over CAT and neither worked correctly when the other was plugged in. I just want to eliminate that.

? Secondly, I wonder if you had an early radio that just had directional comms? We can determine this by the next set of commands. I am also doing this on my radio so that I can be sure it’s A) working and B) I’ve tested the method and I’m not missing points.

? The thought here is “we’ve made big progress”. In determining if the radio does receive commands….. it does. The CAT Icom normally means “in my opinion” that command to turn off CAT are obstructed. I’ve had this hundreds of times with Ham Radio Deluxe wanting to connect as and when it likes. It’s normally down to either FIFO buffers, latency in the command or a setting issue.

? ?I think we can now safely assume that 4800baud is the next best setting. The reason? In my experience it’s more tolerant to latency and buffer problems. Faster rates I found are great to move data but poor as stability and that’s the difference between a command sent and received. You don’t see garbage on the screen! You just don’t communicate at all. So please, for now let’s quickly set 4800baud as I’ve only ever had minimal issues at this rate.

?Please don’t think I’m schooling you but I am a real PITA when it comes to remote support and I would not make a good agent on the phone. So accept my sincere apologies if that is how I’m conveying myself.

See the video and also observe the RX and TX lights blinking on RealTerm. If you only get TX then we can safely say you have either a half duplex version, the RX line is damaged in the cable or you have a Tuner connected?

What is the voltage at the serial port on the radio?? Measure between pins 3 & 5.

I did all you proposed, and it did go well. Things reacted the way you demonstrated. Still no luck with the other programs like HamRadioDeluxe, FL-digi, FTBasicMMO, FTBCAT or WSJT-X. Just like before, Rats847 will connect, but has no feedback from the radio. Seems commands are understood by the radio and there is no duplex communication. The display CAT icon is still on, though.
