Yaesu speaker mic reports of "hot" audio. Fix?
I recently bought a Yeasu speaker mic SSM-17A to go with my new FT-60R. I first started using it by holding it close to my lips but speaking across it, not into it. This is how I have always used my ham mics. However I received some reports that my audio was too "hot" and experimented with holding it 5 - 6 inches away from my mouth. This resulted in better audio reports. However, this is not how I would like to use the mic. Has anyone had comments about the FT-60 audio using this speaker mic? I have not yet been able to test with using the front panel mic only. Any comments are welcome. Thanks!

connecting my HT to an external power supply 12
Hello, So I was given an external power supply at the White Elephant gift exchange during the ham club Christmas party. I spoke with the guy who built it, and he said it's a 2 amp power supply that would supply my HT but not much else. He did point out the danger that if I didn't connect things properly I could burn out my radio, but I'm still curious to learn how to do this even if I never take the chance. There's no diode, just a fuse, a couple of connectors (+ and -) and a plug that's surprisingly not grounded. And a DC dial, of course. My question is this: I want to find the part he described. He said I'd need a part that fits into the battery slot with a couple of cords coming out, used to connect the HT to the poles on the power supply. The part would have to make contact with the contacts on the radio, yes the same ones the battery makes contacts with. Does anyone know what this part is called, or even a part number if one exists? Thanks!

FBA-25A battery holder question 6
I picked up the AA battery case at Dayton.. I put 6 Duracell AA batteries in it and can't really get the battery clip to latch. Is there that much variation in AA battery dimensions that some work and some don't? I spoke with a tech at Batteries America and he told me that some guys have improved the fit by using a sharp pair of cutters and trimming a turn off the positive spring contacts. Has anyone done this? I attempted it with a couple pairs of small diagonal cutters but couldn't seem to get in close enough. Thanks. Phil N3ZP

FNB-83 battery question 25
My FT-60 and two FNB-83 Ni-MH batteries are about 5 years old. Don't use the radio much, situation changed, likely will be using it regularly. For past several months, the batteries have been sitting in their desktop chargers. Today when I put the batteries on the FT-60, they show 7.2 VDC, then, after 3-4 transmissions on low power, the display starts flashing and battery voltage checks at/below 6.2 VDC I have the battery tray that enables me to put 6 AA batteries on the FT60, operates fine with the AA batteries. I guess I ruined the two Ni-MH batteries by leaving them sitting in the charger for months? Joe W4HH

Diamond Antenna Woes 6
My exact problem too! In my case, the long mobile 2m monoband whip they offer. One day it simply died. All the componentry is sealed in-so no repair possible. Similarly, poor performance with friend's Diamond base antennas. Either blows up or dies from water ingress. Comet is sweet. I highly recoomend the GP-3. One piece construction and the beam isn't so flat like the GP-9. I think the GP-3 comboned with a 50 watt Yaesu mobile is the perfect combo that should last forever. Make sure to use black goop seal on the outdoor connector. You will be all set for the long run! IMHO Karl Zuk N2KZ On Oct 31, 2023, at 12:40 PM, Chris Smart <ve3rwj@...> wrote: ? Avoid Diamond! Interesting. Can you elaborate? I bought a diamond X510HDM dual-band vertical, their version of the Comet GP-9, specifically because they claim it could handle 330 W FM on 2 meters, an 250 W FM on 70 CM. I wasn’t going to run quite that much, and quite a bit less power than that immediately fried the little capacitors in the antenna. To say I was annoyed is an understatement. A friend took the antenna apart and replaced the caps with larger ones, and I have had no problems since. But still, I would be wary of their power-handling specifications. Chris

radio shutting off when I press PTT 46
Hello, I'm new to the group and somewhat to ham radio. My Yaesu FT60R worked fine yesterday. Today I can hear on the local repeater but when I try to transmit, the radio turns off completely. It comes back on when I release the PTT button. To my best knowledge nothing has changed since I was yakking away happily on the local repeater yesterday. I've looked at the manual, which sadly has no troubleshooting section. I've also searched messages here to no avail. Is there a direction I can go to solve my problem? Thanks in advance! FYI if it helps: the repeater receive frequency is 147.120. The offset frequency is 147.720. These things were programmed into the used radio I bought so if it's a sudden programming error, I didn't do it! LOL Jayne

DIY Programming Cable 16
I uploaded to the files section my Quick & Dirty programming cable. The cable uses a cheap FTDI USB to RS232 (TTL) adaptor. The prototype has been assembled without soldering iron, by just twisting together the few wires. I used it successfully to program memories with Chirp in my FT-60 under Windows 10. Hope it will be useful. 73 Giovanni IZ5PQT

Fully Draining battery before re-charging question 22
I am sorry if I overlooked this answer somewhere else. I just purchased my first ft-60 and wondered if it was best to let the battery "completely drain" before recharging, and just re-charge when the battery indicator shows low? Someone mentioned letting it "completely drain" before re-charging - left it on for about 20 minutes after the low battery indicator started flashing . I just want to do what is best for the battery. Also, approx. what low voltage reading will trigger the low battery indicator? Thank you. -Scott

So I am hopelessly lost on this FT-60R 29
So this is what I got off of RepeaterBook.com. I was unaware that RadioReference costs money. These are the repeaters within 10 mi of Johnstown. Newcomer 10
Hello everybody! I am in the process of buying an used FT-60E. Since the FT-60R and FT-60E have been produced for a number of years, I would like to know if Yaesu has introduced modifications during that period. Basically, will a 2015 model be different from a 2004 one? 73 Giovanni IZ5PQT

confused about display 5
This one has me stumped. When in memory mode and briefly press BAND and the display shows “tun” in the upper left hand corner. The tuning knob changes the frequency. What is this mode? I can get out of it by holding down the BAND button until I see VFO IN. The page in the user’s manual showing all display areas does not show “tun”. Thanks, Rick KG7MQL

Instantly check frequency of a alphanumeric memory? 17
Hello, On my Yaesy VX-6 when in memory mode, when I press the Moni button , squelch opens and at the same time the memory name changes to the frequency of that memory. So if you have a stored memory with an Alphanumeric name but you don't remember the frequency of it you can see it instantly with a momentary press on the Moni button. Is there a way to do this on a FT-60 ? I had a look at the manual and tried various key combinations of buttons but couldn't find something. Thank you
