So I am hopelessly lost on this FT-60R

So this is what I got off of RepeaterBook.com.? I was unaware that RadioReference costs money.? These are the repeaters within 10 mi of Johnstown.? I programmed them in the radio via the software but I don't hear anything from them

I found a Beginner's Guide but it's still too complex for me.? Is there an Idiot's Guide to the FT-60R??
?
I am clueless, what is my next step?? ?How do I program this thing?? Ideas??
?
Thanks in advance,
Scott

I’ll give it a try…

?

  1. Press the * key to switch to VFO mode.

?

  1. Enter the output frequency of a repeater.

?

  1. Press F/W (bottom right) then 1, and turn the knob on the top until the display says Tone. F/W or PTT to exit.

?

  1. Press F/W and then the number 2, and turn the knob until the tone mentioned for that repeater shows on the display. F/W or PTT to exit.

?

  1. F/W then 3 to adjust power output. Try high.

?

  1. F/W then 4 to adjust offset direction if your radio doesn’t automatically pick the right one based on the frequency you entered.

?

That is from memory, so I hope I didn’t mess up.

?

Scott can you see the frequencies on the LCD readout?

No, I can't see the frequencies, just the names...? Wish I could send you a screenshot of the software I used...? Just sent it to another person.

Sorry,
Scott - KC3VUH

I do not use any software to program mine. I was going to have you tap the vfo via V/M and put in 162.550 and see if you hear the national weather station to make sure the radio receiver is working first.

The FT-60 is easy to program from the radio itself.

Yep, or just hold down the 1 key for a second, switches to the weather band.

Chris, I never even tried my Adams 1-J cd. My needs are simple, only listen to maybe 5 or 6 repeaters. Once in awhile I'll just let it scan all bands.

Scott, if you are having problems programing & get stuck you may be better off doing a factory reset and start out fresh.

Just something to keep in mind.

To each his own. Learning the manual programming process is part of the fun for me. Plus, it means I won’t have to depend utterly on software if something goes wrong.

Did I miss exactly what software you used? Is it guaranteed or at least demonstrated to work reliably with the?FT-60R or is it an experiment?

Let me add to the discussion that the FT-60R has a subaudible tone detect feature. That’s a shortcut once you learn the key sequence.

Since ”nothing” seems to be working so far, factory reset won’t hurt you. You should hear something before doing any programming, by hand or otherwise, unless the volume is down or the squelch is up.

Take your radio to a local club meeting? Someone there will have one and can walk you through programming it. It’s too bad we’re on opposite sides of PA or we could sit down together and dope this out.

There is no such thing as a single "national" WX frequency.

Scott, since you've programmed your FT60 via software, I'm not sure why some folks are giving you programming advice. My guess is that you have just discovered most repeaters don't have a lot of activity. Try transmitting your call sign and "Listening" or "Testing," and listen for a second or so of "hiss" after you release the PTT. That "repeater tail" tells you that you activated the repeater.?

The repeaters may be quiet simply because no one else is using them. Google your local clubs and find out when there are nets scheduled in your area.?

A quick search I found this also there's several YouTube videos out there. You might try it with just the TX tone and no RX tone. Lastly I wouldn't put a lot of stock in Repeater Directory, I do use them but I expect errors, search for local ham radio clubs, they normally list their club repeaters which will give you access to other local hams who can provide a lot of help

I guess I just don’t understand the need for programming software. I am totally blind, and I can input the necessary information to bring up a repeater simply by listening to the tones the radio emits. sure, if I want to program 100 channels, I use the RT systems software. But even though there is no speech output, the FT 60 is very blind friendly. so, if the blind guy can do it…

T-Sql is Tone Squelch - the tone the receiver must hear from the repeater in order to unsquelch. Most repeaters do not send tones. What you want is most likely "T" or Tone, which the FT-60 transmits to gain access to the repeater.?

Good Luck,

Chris

Even quiet repeaters send their IDs in some form. If Scott hears no periodic IDs from his nearby repeaters, something isn’t right.

Nets won’t help Scott if he can’t hear them and that seems to be the matter at hand. Same with the fair idea of trying to key a repeater.

Anyone have a spare, known-good FT-60R they’ll send to Scott, just to get him on the air? Sure it’s a wild idea but it would tell us something. Scott do you want to send your HT to someone you trust for testing/programming?

I would still try a full reset, then tune through the weather radio frequencies. (long press of 1 on the keypad to switch to that frequency range, and turn the clicky knob)

OK Cliff, technically: Known as the "Voice of NOAA's National Weather Service," NWR is provided as a public service by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), part of the Department of Commerce. NWR includes more than 1000? transmitters, covering all 50 states, adjacent coastal waters, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the U.S. Pacific Territories. NWR requires a special radio receiver or scanner capable of picking up the signal. Broadcasts are found in the VHF public service band at these seven frequencies (MHz):
