New vs Old
Peanut Butter Bear
I have both, notice no difference. From: "maurice.riggins@... [FT-60]" To: FT-60@... Sent: Monday, June 20, 2016 9:00 PM Subject: [FT-60] New vs Old
?
I've loved my wife's now 5 year old FT-60R so much, I'm thinking about buying one for myself. Hers is made in Japan. I've heard the new ones are now made in China and aren't the same/as good as as the older ones. Can someone here give me a rundown on the differences? Thanks!

开云体育I understand the big difference is in the language you've got to use when giving it voice commands. Mandaran is a whole lot harder to learn than Nihongo. ?Grin. AF0DJ.?-------- Original message --------

Wonderful news, guys. Thanks much for the input. I’m gonna pull the trigger on a new one. Since my old Icom T7H died, I’ve been stuck with an IC-91AD D-Star I won… and an oven mitt to use it, LOL. That, and listening to R2D2 on weak signals, gets old, so I don’t use it on digital anyway. I’m also gonna get my wife a new battery, and I’m thinking of getting her the SBH-13 charging cradle and PA-48B wall wart that comes with the new ones. Think that'll work fine with the older version? I’ll also get us each one of the 6 AA battery trays to fill with eneloops for backup. Thanks again! |

开云体育My impression - I had a Older one for 8 years - loved it - liked the ability tocharge AA Nimh packs - thats all I used for that one.?? Final went out 2 years ago.? Other than that feature my feeling is that the receive is not as sensitive on the newer one. I have a harder time hearing the same repeaters - even with an aftermarket antenna. I did a side by side signal strength test with a friends new Icom HT - I would get a repeater at S7 and he had it full scale and louder.? Might just be my particular unit - hard for me to tell but I wish the old one didnt break. On 06/20/2016 09:00 PM,

开云体育Thanks, Joel. I appreciate the feedback. UPS says my new one will be here Thursday. I’ll put it side by side with my wife’s and see how it does.?I have figured out hers will charge the battery while on external power, but mine won’t. Bit of a bummer, but I can live with it.

You can thank the State of California for that. They began requiring that chargers for devices requiring more than 5 volts or so automatically shut-off when the charge is complete.

In order to comply, and rather than have to have a special version just for Commiefornia, Yaesu eliminated the capability of charging the FT-60's battery with external power plugged into the side of the radio. Hence the drop-in charging cradle (with automatic shut-off) supplied with radios manufactured since early 2013. 73, Jim K5JG On 6/21/2016 5:47 PM, Maurice Riggins maurice.riggins@... [FT-60] wrote:

In all honesty, pumping unregulated constant current into a NiMH cells - like what was shipped with the FT-60R until 2013 - is NOT the best way to charge those packs.
The intelligent charger that now comes with new FT-60R will provide us a coulple hundred more discharge-charge cycles. That's a benefit in our favor - no matter what politics may have been involved. Clint K6LCS http://www.work-sat.com? |
When she first won that radio, my wife was using the wall wart charger that came with it plugged into the side of the radio. At some point, and I can't remember when, I bought her a second battery and the?VAC-370 rapid charger/cradle--I suspect that was maybe four years ago. Then, at some point later, she decided to take everything down to the basement, to have in case we went down there in a tornado. I don't argue.
The radio and one battery spent at least a couple of years, maybe three or more, down there in the?VAC-370, while the other battery never got charged again. Bottom line is she has one battery that lasts a pretty good while in use, and another that doesn't last long at all. Since she doesn't transmit nearly as much, I'm taking her decent battery as a backup for me (and the VAC-370), and buying her a new battery and a charger setup like what's coming with my new one (happy wife, happy life). And we'll both get a AA tray. My new radio and other gear is Out for Delivery, :D |

开云体育That is technically correct but that being said, I would get three years and more out of a set ofcheap nimh cells? from walmart that had more capacity then the stock battery pack. I would hook it up for a few hours and unplug it - knowing not to abuse them.? On 06/23/2016 08:43 AM,

Thursday, 23 Jun at 22:22 EDT - It all arrived this afternoon. As several here suggested, the radio is made in Japan and the batteries in China. The only difference I notice is the new radio stands up without wobbling—not sure why. I can’t see any difference, but it’s there. I can’t see or hear any difference with weak signal reception between the old and the new. If one shows stronger than the other, I swap positions and both radios perform the same in the stronger position.
I charged up both new FNB-83 batteries on the two new SBH-13 charging cradles and PA-48B wall warts. It’s weird not to see a green LED when charging is finished, but I suppose that would use too much energy for the California Communists. The old “good" battery will continue to go in the VAC-370 Rapid Charger (as will the new batteries when fast charge is needed). The two FBA-25 AA alkaline packs are waiting for a 50-pack of Eveready Energizer Max AA (E91) for $18.99 shipped from eBay. If I go with loose NiMH, I want to do some research on eneloop vs Powerex first. Setup: Added password in PSWD W Changed PSWD to PWD. ON Added call sign to CW WRT Changed CWID to TX ON Reprogrammed P1 key to DC VLT Kept RXSAVE at 200 MS Changed TXSAVE to SAV. ON Changed TOT to 2MIN Kept APO at OFF Kept ARS at ARS. ON Changed NAME to ALPHA All our memory entries use call sign labels. I put 2m in the first one hundred memories and 70 cm in the second hundred. Then I divide the hundreds into tens. The first ten (0-9 or 100-109) I reserve for quick temporary or miscellaneous entries, and the next 9 sets of 10 represent counties. So for us, the first memory digit (or lack thereof) represents band, the second digit the county, and the last, my repeater number assignment for that county. I try to keep the 3rd digit the same for repeater call signs with both 2m and 70cm repeaters. Anyway, this wraps up my saga of getting a new FT-60R for me and getting my wife’s back up to speed. — Moe AB8XA |
开云体育I don't buy replacements for stock 1400mAh battery on my older FT-60 (circa
2007).? I have a AA case and use Eneloops religiously.? The only time
the stock battery is used is while the Eneloops are charging.? The original
1400mAh?battery is starting to go low much?quicker now than it did
when it was new.? So, I'll toss it soon and buy six more 2000mAhEneloops
for the AA case.? Much more reliable, longer transmit life?and don't
have to worry about overcharging with the wall wart.? I have two separate
NiMh chargers that accommodate 4 cells each. In the long run, I find this more
economical than buying a "quality" replacement for the original battery.

开云体育Problem I have is the AA battery case for my New FT60 will not close when goodhi cap AA's are in it - only alkalines - the NiMh are just a little too big. I have Powerex 2500 Mah cells. ? On 06/24/2016 08:13 PM, jtkeyz@...
