You can thank the State of California for that. They began requiring
that chargers for devices requiring more than 5 volts or so
automatically shut-off when the charge is complete.

In order to comply, and rather than have to have a special version just
for Commiefornia, Yaesu eliminated the capability of charging the
FT-60's battery with external power plugged into the side of the radio.

Hence the drop-in charging cradle (with automatic shut-off) supplied
with radios manufactured since early 2013.
