The other thing you can do is just name the channel with the freq numbers, less the decimal, for those channels you use all the time. ?

I also had a VX-6 and have often wished that my FT-60 had that feature
as well.
The best you can do is to program the P1 or P2 button on the keypad to
bring up the NAME function from the set menu.
Once programmed, briefly press the F/W key and then whichever "P" key
you programmed. Then turn the main knob to select Alpha or Freq. Press
the F/W key or PTT to exit. Your Alpha/Freq selection is on a per memory
basis (not global) and will remain in effect for that memory until you
change it back.
This method saves having to access the NAME function in the Set Menu
(Press F/W, Press Set, Turn Main knob to "NAME (menu #27), Press F/W,
turn Main knob to select Alpha or Freq, Press PTT to exit).
It only saves a couple of keystrokes and one instance of having to
fiddle with the Main knob, but it helps.
FYI, on the other "P" key I've programmed "DC VLT" (Menu #12) so that
with two quick key presses I can see the actual battery voltage.
