Re: FT-101 EE PB1547 Voltages

Emerson,
Thank you very much for sharing that information! I will certainly dig into the manual and try to learn the procedure to test that component. I have ordered the silver mica caps C13, C11 and C131, as I’ve been told that they should be replaced regardless of how they test. I also ordered a 10pf final neutralizer cap to be prepared to use USA made 6JS6C’s. I have a retired radio/TV shop owner ham friend looking through his tube inventory as we speak.
Thanks again!

The pin 5 voltage spec is around -150v.?
A source of Tx problems is often Q3 (2sc784R) at PB 1181B RF unit.
The attached manual can help you,?
Good luck

It receives perfectly but no TX (3 watts). I have pulled all the boards and carefully cleaned all the contacts. I see no sign of damage or excessive heat in any of the components, with exception of the NEC tubes which both have some pretty dark oval staining inside. No signs of modification in this rig. I have checked the voltages on PB1547, and have found pin #2 at -72v (-60v spec), pin #4 at -21v (-20v spec) and pin #5 at -192v (-100v spec). I’m wondering if that high voltage on pin #5 is an indicator of a specific issue, or with the bias and driver voltages being within reason, could those old tubes have died from “natural causes”. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

It has been many years since I last worked on any FT-101 anything. I am going to need some guidance on fixing this rig. All I have for test gear is an old Echo tube driven RF GEN and a Ideal 61-340 digital VOM. I sold my portable tube checker a few years back.
BTW When I tried to TX on the FT-890 I heard NOTHING on the FT-101-ES

Hi Dan. I found out why the the reason that the receive isn't working. A suggestion from Alex N7SM at the winter field day. To check the headphone jack. Sure enough I jumped the pines on the back of the headphone jack with an alger clip and I got full sound. But I don't reremember how to get the head phone jack out.

Re: Rs: need help fixing a Yeasu ft-101-es

Hi Steve,

I have the FT-101E but have never heard of the ES.? I checked online to see if any schematics were available but did not locate one.? I did find out the below information about it.? Maybe that's why I'm not finding any documentation on it.? It looks to have been manufactured in the late 70's.? Since you have three tubes your transceiver must have been modified for more power output.? I assume that the input power was changed from 100VAC to the US 120VAC requirement.? Using your VOM you could measure the supply voltages.? A schematic from another model might help verifying if your unit is close to that to determine voltages.? The unit is old enough that you may have high ESR, leaking capacitors throughout.? That should be an easy check to measure some of the smaller caps with an ESR meter and you can do it in circuit as long as the caps have been discharged before measuring.? You mentioned working on these units before, so you probably know all this.? I'm not an expert but plan on powering up my 101E but using a dim bulb tester I need to build.? I bought my Yaesu it the late 70's and would hate to see any smoke as most parts are obsolete.??

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

  • The?FT-101ES?was a special FT-101E model for the Japanese market only with a single 6JS6C tube and 50-watt output.

Erwin,
I have one of these FR-101’s with the LED’s as well.
I have never been able to find any documentation on the LED version either other than verifying these were part of the last production run of the FR-101.?
If you do happen to find any additional info on yours, please share with the group.
I think these were quite rare. Yours is the only other one I’m aware of.?
I also have several FR-101’s with the more common green VFD tubes.
Great receiver, (I have mine paired with the matching FL-101).

Re: FR-101D with LED display?

Hello Erwin,

I have an FR-101D, together with the matching hybrid transmitter, the FL-101.
My FR-101D has the green display. I have the original manual for it. I bought the pair together with the FL-2000B at an estate sale. The transmitter and the receiver didn't work initially, but after thorough cleaning from accumulated dirt inside and applying contact cleaner to all the switches, potentiometers, and internal connectors, the set works great. I use the setup dedicated to a regional AM net on 80 meters, and I get compliments on the audio quality.
I can scan my manual and make a PDF file I'll be happy to share with you.

Re: FR-101D with LED display?

Hi,
I’ve just checked my FR101D and it has a green display, I too have an FL101 and the FR101D, I also have a standard FR101 analogue display. The only thing I can’t find is the 5 pin plug for the cable end. Thinking of using Din socket and plug.

Amanda

Thanks again Peter. I'll look into those items. (when I next get the inclination!)

Okay Peter - that one sounds very much like a leaky C13. That capacitor couples the anode of the driver to the grids of the PA and is another of those known weak spots!

I sounds as if your radio does need a fair bit of TLC and I would recommend replacing C11, C13, C131 and C17 - all of these are chassis mounted items on the underside of the radio in the driver/PA area. Whilst there, the driver & PA areas should also be checked to see if any of the resistors there have gone out of tolerance and replace any that have.

I have an early 101 and a late 101E and have seen all of the above capacitors go leaky on one or both radios, plus a number of the resistors in the driver/PA area go out of tolerance.
