Hey – that’s pretty cool!? I have a colleague that had the original FT-101E manual, the schematics, the sheet with the authorized service centers AND- - - da da ta!? A manual for the freq counter.? Not that I have that acceory, but I will go to FedEx office and get a high-rez scan.?? Whether or not the group wants me to share that or not.

Today was a nice day.

?

I was able to find an original FT-101B/E/EE/EX Service and Maintenance Manual. ?I never figured I'd ever find one but I did!?

?

Complete with schematics, page of authorized dealers (circa Jan 77), and order blanks. Haha, wonder if that would still work. I kid, I kid.?

?

Cheers,?

Re: New to me FT-101B

I actually came across an original FT-101B/E/EE/EX Service Manual. ?Which was an unexpected find for me.?
?
Here is a document to add to the library of FT-101 items for all. I have never seen this until I found it in the manual.?

Re: Diagrams

Hi,
????? ? Attached is a pdf of some of circuit details of the early model FT-101 Serial No. < 25,000 (I have that model).?

a) The main circuit diagram attached, is for the early model FT-101, note the internal details of the plug in modules identified as 'MJ(1), (2), ...' are not provided on that circuit 'assembly' drawing, but the interface pins of the plug-in circuits (MJs & PB numbers) are provided.?

b) The numbers of the plug in modules for the early model to look for (early model) are PB-1077B for the main receiver RF plug-in PCB, High Frequency IF Unit (PB-1084C) and the low frequency IF unit PB-1080A, for example. If the circuit diagram does not reference the PB-1xxx numbers listed, it is a circuit diagram for a later model.

c) The Fox Tango site does have a readable pdfs of early model circuit diagrams with circuits of the early model plug in modules included.

????? ? I hope this is of help.

Regards.

Re: Early FT-101 problems

I will check the lamps. They do come on for a few seconds before the diodes blow. Thank you!

Re: Early FT-101 problems

Thank you! Sounds like a solid plan. I will let you know how it goes.?

Re: Diagrams

Thank you but I already have those manuals. As far as I can tell the schematics are all for B models and newer. Am I missing something??

One or more of the lamps (meter, VFO, triangle) might be shorted.? That will blow the two diodes.

No expert here, but can suggest a few things.

Remove all the boards.

Measure the resistance to ground of the 13.5 vdc line.

If grounded, suspect the Dial Lamps housing shorting.

If all ok then, insert one board at time and check the 13.5 to ground.

Pay attention to the mixer board is installed correctly. One mounting tab to the rear and two?

mounting tabs to the front of the radio.

At this point, let us know. ?

I have also replaced C6 with a same value ceramic cap. Both 10.5vac lines on the xfrmr are good. The diagram I have shows the 13.5v going to the power jack but does not show where it comes out to the rest of the system. All other voltages at the xfrmr are normal. I suspect there is a short somewhere but I have no idea where to start tracing the 13.5 through the rest of the system. Any help is appreciated.?

Re: New to me FT-101B

My turn for questions to the greater group as to what to do first.?
?
I am pretty much at the last phase of my refurbishment of the FT-101B
?
I have one issue to where the frequency on the rig and the actual frequency are off by a bit. I figure this will get remedied with the overall tuning up and alignment of the radio.?
?
Thing is, what to do first, second, next, last.?
?
Should I neutralize the tubes first or get the voltages right first then do the neutralization? (I have done it once with new tubes already, should I do it again?)
?
Are there preliminary steps (ref section 7 of the Service Manual) to do prior to the TX Mixer / Driver and RX Front end stages??
?
I'm happy to hear inputs from the community as to your approaches here.?
?
I am in the home stretch and am ready to get this sweet lady back on the air.?
?
Regards,?

I am now .5 KHz off, down from 2.5K off. !!!!?

Man, this is fun.?

Sorry if I am bugging anyone with my posts. But I want to capture as much as I have done.....somewhere in case someone else new starts down this road.?

Re: New to me FT-101B

Dave,
?
Everything that I have posted in this thread is how I finally got to this point. I believe the biggest thing was that I had some bad cap components that were changed out.?
During my initial inspection of each card and several components within the rig, I found some additional capacitors that had split. Those were identified and replaced along with all the electrolytic capacitors.?
?
Capacitors on PB-1314A that control the Bias adjust were changed. Very good chance the originals were bad. All the capacitors in this radio were born before January 1975. So, replacing them was the best way to go for me.?
?
If you look at the schematic on 1314A pin 4. That is the -20 VDC control voltage for the driver tube bias and the adjustment circuitry associated with it. There are a couple of electrolytic caps as well as a number of mylar caps that I ended up replacing as they were split. Reasonably sure that was where the driver bias adjust. problem I had ended up getting fixed.
?
Now as I listen to the rig, I am ~2.5 k off (down) in frequency. So, an alignment is most definitely the next thing on my list to accomplish.?
?
And that is gonna happen after I do the tube neutralization steps.?
?
Regards,?
