Re: 42 years for a dry joint from manufacturing to cause a problem!
Hi Peter, It's amazing how long it has taken these dry joints to cause trouble. I guess it is all part of the "bath tub curve" theory that we were taught about reliability and the probability of failure over time. 73 Gordon On Sun, 2 Apr 2023 at 05:27, Peter Roberts G4DJB <groups@...> wrote: I can't beat that one Gordon, but I did have a dry joint on one of the circuit boards in my early FT-101 that only became apparent after ~35 years! --

I guess I'll try the cold method, with the removal of the ACC Plug as I'm inexperienced and don't want to spend 120 USD to get new tubes. |
Re: FT101ZD Mk1 AM RX but no SSB/CW
Hello, You wrote that AM TX is improved with ALC on?? There is no ALC feedback on AM. Have you set the bias current correctly?? (60mA) What is the AM carrier plate current when you tune up the rig for AM TX.? (should be around 100mA) AM is actually a very straight forward signal path, especially on TX.? There is no AM RX IF filter, they (unfortunately) use the SSB 2.3kHz SSB filter.? Not sure I fully understood the issues you're having.? It arrived with him with a known no TX fault. I have not done any TX tests yet. Just trying to get it to receive at the moment. The set only receives on AM - not on SSB / CW. There has been some work done on this set over the years so some red herrings may be in there somewhere. This set used to have RX on all bands but very unstable, (fast frequency jitter). I have been told that after pulling and replacing the three plug in boards, (RF unit, Pre-mix unit, Pre-mix local unit), the set went deaf to all but AM, . All co-ax connections checked OK and in the correct positions. Card slot pins all look fine. No busted tracks on pcb's. |
Re: New Final Tubes.. How to Neutralize?
I used both methods (hot and cold) and prefer the 'cold' method. If you don't have a scope or just a simple AM radio to monitor RF output then a Germanium diode terminated with a resistor would do the trick. Have a look here for the circuitry.? Re: New Final Tubes.. How to Neutralize?
Jose, I prefer the " cold neutralization " method by removing the ACC plug in the back to remove the heaters from the finals. Do you have a multimeter and a RF probe? If you don't have a probe, do you have a diode? You can measure the RF voltage at the antenna connector with a diode in series with the multimeter on DC volts. It is best to have a dummy load on the rig, not because you will be transmitting, just so it is terminated by 50 ohms during the neutralization. This method doesn't risk your finals and I have found it to work well.? 73 Don ve3ids? On Tue., Mar. 28, 2023, 2:21 p.m. Jose - KK7HSA, <palazuelos@...> wrote: Good day FT101ers...? New Final Tubes.. How to Neutralize?
Good day FT101ers...? I have a FT-101EE that is due for Final replacements as I only can get 40W out of the rig right now and I got myself a pair of 6JS6C Tubes that were tested in a tube checker to be 95% good life.
Im reading the service manual page 4-12 were it talks about the neutralization, and get conflicting videos on youtube on how to perform this procedure.? ?In One it has the use of an oscilloscope (which I don't have) and the second one using a second radio (Which I also don't have)? Has anyone experienced problems using the method from the service manual, or has perhaps recorded a video of a neutralization effort per manual on youtube? Thanks |

Re: How to align frequencies?
Todd AL7PX
Mine is the same way. The dial needle is actually on the other side (zero end) KHz mark slightly. The dial (back) behind the line doesn't track perfectly I've found from one extreme to the other in the 500 kHz VFO. The 102 had a better calibration. I'm use to it now.

Early FT101 Serial Numbers
Hello All
I am trying to understand the serial number on my FT101: 1M117016 I have been able to establish from the PCB number reference list that this is an early 25,000 or under model. Does the 1M/1M11 have a meaning? Is this then model number 17016? Any guidance appreciated! 73 Steve W8SAW |
