2025 REGISTRATION IS OPEN! SOME GREAT UPDATES!
Hello everybody! I've been updating the entire website, if I missed something, please let me know. I've arranged to pay for 60 AMPs of 110 AC available for most of the party, starting Wednesday to Sunday, and I have solar panels and a generator as well. I've been granted permission to repurchase and use red plastic covers for the LED lights in the rest rooms. They are much easier to use and cover the lighting more completely. I expect to have them before the June party. Lasers will not be permitted on the observing fields during observing, which is the standard at all other parties. If you have never been to a star party, please read the rules page on the website www.yorkcountystarparty.org I have the state park rules linked there, as well as these two links about star party etiquette. https://www.go-astronomy.com/articles/star-party-etiquette.htm ? Sky&Telescope's "What's Up at Star Parties?": https://www.skyandtelescope.com/astronomy-resources/astronomy-questions-answers/whats-up-at-star-parties/ I was able to rent the pavilion for the September party Saturday, and I'm planning to have AV available for talks. This is my plan for all parties in the future. The June party Saturday was already reserved, and may still be usable after 8pm, or earlier, depending on when it is vacated. If anyone would like to give a talk, please keep this in mind, and contact me by email with an outline of the talk, which is required by the park supervisor before the party. NOTE: If anyone still has my starpartyphil email address, please stop using it. the address I use now is the one I used to send this email, so please make sure philderosa1@... is the one you have in your contacts. Also, I would like to know, in case of emergency, if anyone attending is a first responder or qualified in first aid. I have never had an incident at any party in the last 31 years, but I would like to be prepared. I am hoping to have more time available this year for this event, and I hope to do more personal observing as well PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH YOUR CLUBS, FREINDS, and anyone else who is a hobbyist. Thank you all for your support! Phil DeRosa philderosa1@... www.yorkcountystarparty.org June 25-29, 2025 and September 17-21, 2025 1

June 2025 Party is less than 3 months away!
4
Hello everyone! Today is Thursday, March 27. Yesterday we had some snow showers, this morning was 26 degrees, it's now doubled to 52, and they're forecasting 78 degrees for Saturday. Welcome to spring! Actually, winter was crazy warm and cold around here, too. I am now looking forward to enjoying the warmer temperatures and outdoor activities I love, including astronomy. How about you? As I mentioned on the website, I have arranged for AC power to be available during the event. Not primitive anymore. I have a quote for the red covers for the bathroom lights, which I will be ordering in the next few days. The remaining lights are a few security lights, and they will have red covers shielding overflow lighting as usual, while providing the needed security for the office area. I wish to thank the PA State Park people for their cooperation. Now I would like to ask a favor. Many of you go to other parties, as well as this one, which is understandable, each party has its own unique features. Many of you also belong to clubs. Please submit this party's info to your club newsletter, so that your other members are aware of the dates and website. I know some of you do this already, and it has been greatly appreciated and helpful. I would also ask that you share this info with friends in other clubs, newsletter editors, and websites. This may always be a small party, but right now it is tiny. I sometimes wonder if I should call it the Shoestring star party. I would like to do this party as long as possible, in spite of the expense increases in the last year. They've almost doubled since I started at this park. I'm not talking about the things I've purchased; that's something else. I'm talking about the fee increases and insurance I'm required to have. Don't get me wrong, I am not planning to stop. I just need to grow this a bit to become more sustainable. Together, we can continue to enjoy this site for many years. I'll thank you in advance for your help and look forward to seeing many of you at this year's parties. Clear Skies and safe travels. Phil DeRosa PS - Registration IS open! 2025 Parties
6
Hello all! And the winners are: June 25-29 September 17-21 Both Wednesday to Sunday noon Seems strange to mention camping on the coldest day in a very long time! Anyway, I will be posting the dates and updating the website in the near future, ASAP. Please keep alert for updates to register. NEW info for the party: I have solar power and generator power for the parties. I will be discussing landline power with the state parks, and I'll keep you posted. I have no idea what the demand might be, but it has been more than sufficient for the last few parties. I'm hoping to be able to have AV equipment available for speakers and talks for both parties. If you would like to offer to do a talk, please contact me directly at philderosa1@... for more details.

2024 FALL PARTY DATES
4
Hello everybody! First, I want to thank all of you for your continued support, especially those that either attended or registered for the June party this year. in spite of the torrential rains the first 2 days, we did end up with about 2 1/2 evenings of observing, and decent camping. It takes a lot of prep to pull off, and I always enjoy and appreciate everyone's participation, but especially that everyone makes this a fun event. I want to provide current thoughts about the fall party briefly. so here I go... September dates were unavailable because of an unknow conflict at the park. October new moon is October 2, so I am looking at October 3-6, Thursday to Sunday, as the most sensible time to request from the park supervisor. Yes, it's a day shorter, because I have commitments the week before the party that need to be kept. Expenses don't really change, so the fees will be the same, unless I am off in my estimates are off. As soon as I get a reply from the supervisor, I will announce it and activate the registration page. After a successful use of the new solar equipment, I want to state there is sufficient power for recharging phones, lights, and some computers, and if necessary, even some battery packs with the use of a small generator. If you have solar, bring it along. I have a screen room and table I set up to shade batteries and phones. While I can't promise the weather, but given what we've experienced so far this year, and the one October party I had in 2021, there is a good chance camping might be more comfortable beginning of October, and the nights are longer, so be prepared for cool nights. THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT! PLEASE STAY TUNED! PHIL

October party update and request..
7
Hi everyone! FYI, registrations are good at this point, with about six weeks to go. Just enough for a small party, and registrations usually increase exponentially the closer we get. That said, there's still plenty of room, and I believe a bit more, the merrier! Please consider mentioning the York County Star Party to your freinds, clubs, and newsletter editors. All they need is the link and the current dates: yorkcountystarparty.org Lancaster County, PA October 3-6, 2024. I see several friends have already registered, and this can only happen with your continued support. Depending on turnout, October may be used more often. Thank you everyone, hope to see YOU there! Security lighting on maintenance building - can this be mitigated?
2
Hi Phil, My wife and I enjoyed the party in June 2023, but the one thing I noted last time out was that the DCNR had some large vehicle maintenance buildings with bright security lighting that impacted the northern view. Is there any chance they would give you the authority to turn off those lights, at least the ones facing the observing field? Or perhaps cover / shield them with some red filters? Thanks Dave

Star party
Here is the notice I sent out to the 60mm Telescope Club: Okay everyone it is official, The 60mm Telescope Club Star Party will be from Thursday October 3rd to Sunday October 6th at Susquehannock State Park in Pennsylvania. This is a beautiful park is located along the banks of the Susquehanna river surrounded by Amish farms. Even though we are combining with the York County Star Party, the park is actually located in Lancaster County. I have been going to this park for years and although it's not Cherry Springs it does have dark skies and I have seen most all Messiers from this field with a 60. The Milky Way is naked eye. Registration will be up soon and I'd like everyone to know there will be a $5.00 discount for all 60mm Telescope Members. I will send a link just as soon as it is up. The star party will be located on a large softball field. Camping will be right there on the field except for large RVs which must set up in the parking lot across the street. There will be a solar charging station set up for charging batteries and even a backup generator. I encourage anyone who have old astronomy equipment and would like to sell it to bring it along, I hope to have a swap meet on Saturday. If anyone would like to give a talk we would be delighted, just let me know. Hope to see you there. Pete Kellermann Mediator

2024 FALL PARTY DATES: OCTOBER 3-6 (Thursday TO Sunday)
2
Hello everybody! The October dates have been approved and confirmed: October 3-6, 2024. I've been updated much of the main YCSP website, made some changes and corrections. The registration page has been activated. We are currently about 10 weeks from the start of the Fall party. The solar power I am supplying was more than sufficient for the June party, so we can offer basic charging, and I also have a lithium battery auto jumper and a small generator if needed. I am planning on attempting informal talks, depending on daytime pavilion availability, and the weather. Anyone that has a short talk available, please contact me to discuss the situation, this may not be a rain or shine activity. Depends on whether the pavilion is available or not. I don't want anyone going to a lot of effort if the talks get scrubbed. That's it for now. Have a fun and safe summer, everyone. FYI, my understanding is that the newest Covid booster becomes available by the end of August. Darn thing mutates like the flu. I'll probably get that shot, too. Thanks for your continued support! Phil

Approval received for October 3-6, 2024. Registration will open tomorrow

Hi everyone! The next star party is good to go! As Jeremy Carlo stated last week, it is one of the best times to observe, and can have good camping weather, too. Last time i did October, it was the most comfortable camping ive done in years. It may be a good alternative to using September in the future. I'll send another notice when it IS open, and further updates as is warrented. I try not to send too many. Many of us get more emails than we want. Thank you all for your continued support. Have a safesummer. Hope to see you in October. Phil Get Outlook for Android

Star Party
2
Hey Phil, This is Pete Kellermann, you should know or hate me by now, I just like you to know weather you like it or not I'm scheduling the "60mm Telescope Club Annual Star Party" to coincide with the York County Star Party. You ask what is the 60mm Telescope Club? It is an on line group I started 20 years ago on yahoo and is now a Group IO of over 800 members from around the world who enjoy observing with small scopes. Every now and than we have an annual star party and I thought it would be good to combine my star party with yours. Don't get too excited, I usually only get around 10 people here in the states so you aren't going to get over run. So far I have 6 that are interested so I thought I'd give you a heads up. UPDATE JUNE 7

The weather is glorious today, and the forecast isnt bad, either. Bill and Kaitlan arrived last night, and they were up late observing after dark. The field is dry, spots are on a first come basis. Registration is at the table in front of my camper. Please sign in upon arrival. Large units need to ask for me before picking the best location. Thanks, looking forward to seeing everybody. Phil

June 5. I'm here! Re: [YCSP] JUNE 5-9 2024 PARTY UPDATE
Hi guys, nice to hear I'm going to have company soon. I've had only a few drops so far. The radar looks interesting, though, and I dont blame anyone who is choosing the times to arrive here. Please spread the word, though, I'm certain everyone has had a busy year, it's now time to party! Its actually quite nice. Cool, breezy, and everuone else has gone home for the day. I've got my camper and storage tent set up, and that's only in the last hour. NOTE: I arrived around 12:30, they HAD ROAD CLOSED SIGNS EVERYWHERE, BUT CONTINUE. They are repaving the road, one side at a time, and letting people pass asap. I waited 15 minutes. I had help to get EVERYTHING COVERED WITH RED FILTERS. That was my priority today. Now it's time to eat. Looks like I've got to get things done quickly, I've got less than an hour before the rains arrive, raining for maybe an hour. C u soon! The forecast is looking decent, and I plan to be there for Friday and Saturday. Regarding the September party, that's a bummer. Here is a list of a number of other star parties scheduled in the region (see page 3): https://s3.amazonaws.com/ClubExpressClubFiles/951143/documents/2024_06_DVAA_Newsletter_1192253435.pdf?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIA6MYUE6DNNNCCDT4J&Expires=1717560896&response-content-disposition=inline%3B%20filename%3D2024_06_DVAA_Newsletter.pdf&Signature=cjhJy3simlI%2FVAXOZn%2FT%2BGP8Fy4%3D The original September dates were already a few days after the new moon; the following weekend (September 13-15) will have a more-than-first-quarter moon up until after midnight. Any chance of doing Labor Day weekend (August 28 - September 1), which could possibly be extended through Sunday night since it's a holiday weekend? That does conflict with Spruce Knob, which might be on some folks' radar. That said, AHSP is already sold out, so if you haven't gotten your tickets already it's too late Early August conflicts with Stellafane, although it's also worth pointing out that Cherry Springs will be limited in early August since the Woodsman's show is occurring over the new moon weekend, so folks might be looking for alternatives for the August new moon period. The last weekend in September conflicts with the South Jersey Star Party, so that's not ideal since I know there are some folks who like to attend both. First weekend in October could work. That overlaps with the end of the Staunton River Star Party; not sure how much overlap this group has with attendance there. Best, Jeremy
