Thank you very much for posting the schematics.

Re: Does the 5105 support an unamplified 8ohm speaker?

Interesting topic for the X5105. I was not thrilled with the X5105 speaker and decided to DIY and built a custom, active stereo audio amp for this radio and other QRP radios equipped with a low-level stereo output jack. I found a similar kit to this on eBay and built it into an angled-front steel enclosure. The kit looks like this:

?

?

It comes with 2 full range 1-inch speakers and powered by 5VDC. Just use the 2.5mm provided audio cable to connect between rig and audio amp.

?

Upon first usage, I realized that amp audio spectrum was designed for music (approx. 100 ¨C 15000Hz), too wide for this application. So, I found some web-articles on mechanical tuned ports for voice bandwidths and came up with PVC-pipe tuned ports that narrow the bandwidth to about 3KHz, or approx. 5000 ¨C 8000Hz. I also added a switchable, passive LC crossover filter to help with the low bass/high treble rejection and a large volume control. In addition, I run it on a rechargeable NiMH rechargeable 9VDC battery that fits on the back and is long-running for /P POTA operations in the field.

?

This amp is spectacular as it fills the area with loud, filtered CW. I would suggest this product for anyone who has an X5105 and does not like the OOB (Out-Of-Box) speaker audio. Finished product is below. Not pretty, but very functional ?

And, not too long ago, I bought a little "Ki" rechargeable powered speaker to use with the X5105.? It does give a volume boost!? I have not yet used the speaker "on the air" yet, though.
It is smaller than the old un-powered one, too!

Re: Does the 5105 support an unamplified 8ohm speaker?

Yes, I have used a small, un-amplified speaker intended for use with a PC.? It did help 'some' to make the audio clearer.

Re: Does the 5105 support an unamplified 8ohm speaker?

I can't answer your question directly, just add a bit of background.? First off, I prefer headphones, and have not tried using any sort of external speaker, either powered or 'plain.'? The headphone / speaker switch limits the volume of the sound sent to the headphones to 'protect the operators hearing' - all well & good, I suppose.

Sorry, I wasn't correct or complete there - that's my total QSOs, using all 3 radios (first IC-706MkII at 12 watts, then X5105 and 2 watts, and for the last 2 years an FTdx10 at 10 watts.

Most of the QSOs were not made with the X5105, but all used low power.

Re: Xiegu ordering parts?

Edited

Here's an update from Xiegu.??

Out of desperation I sent an email to Xiegu's support email rather than my direct contact I was supplied by an ex vendor as I never got a reply by the direct although back door route.? The email I received from tech support basically told me to contact who I purchase the radio from for support there. Gee that was useful as nobody stocks parts in the United States other than a few basic knobs and someone has a front and back panel available.? Low and behold on Friday I received a message from the direct email not tech support. The lady apologized saying she hadn't checked her email in days!!!??
She inquired if I still needed the parts. I told her I did and I gave her my address asking her for a price including shipping. Haven't heard anything since. I'm hopeful maybe I'll hear something tonight. If not I'm going to write Xiegu support and parts off and consider these throwaway products.? Xiegu In particular and China in general just don't seem to get people on this side of the pond want support. We don't want to throw things away and buy new every time they break. Seems to be pardon the pun a foreign concept to them.? Fingers crossed for reply.??

Does the 5105 support an unamplified 8ohm speaker?

Hello everyone,

Is the title says can the 5105 use an external unamplified speaker? Also in menu number 6 there is a button that is marked s/p. You push the button and it goes between speaker and phone. Also the icon next to the volume level bar changes from a speaker to a headphone. Doesn't seem to do anything else. I was hoping it would change the characteristics of the headphone jack to a speaker jack but no joy.? Just wondered if there is something wrong with the radio or that's the way it works normally.? I would like to use it with a clear speech external DSP but it only supports speaker level input. Also an 8 ohm speaker itself doesn't seem to work.

AND you get 2.5 times as many "ego" points (or bragging rights) for using 2 watts instead of 5 watts.

Re: Which power output to be used with FT8 ?

Thank you Doug. I will follow your? suggestion. (2 watts)? Better to be safe . No repair is possible with X5105.
Thank you? Dan. Yes , you're also right.? I thought that 5 watts was already a low power output.
But in effect also with 2 watts is possible to have QSO in FT8.

Re: Which power output to be used with FT8 ?

Isn't 'good amateur radio practice' to use the minimum power level to communicate?

And, I'll agree with the 'turn it down a bit' so not to fry the radio.

73 & have fun radio-ing.
Dan

Re: Which power output to be used with FT8 ?

Due to the relatively high duty cycle of FT8, I run my X5105 set for 2 watts output.
I feel that it's better to be safe than sorry.? Especially with the lack of repair support from Xiegu.

(I have my FTdx10 set for 10 watts.)

In my 5 years on FT8, I've logged about 6,200 QSOs and worked? a little over 170 countries, and have 164 confirmed with LoTW.

Re: Which power output to be used with FT8 ?

Hi Lou,
thank you for your kind answer and suggestion.?
I 'm using? ?FT8 for approx 1 hour? sessions with battery and/or with AC (without charging the battery at the same time) and I was surprised not to detect any particular over heating. Rig is connected directly to PC? without CE19 device? (WSJT-X has X5105 in the list of preset TRX)? . As a precaution I let the rig having some rest from time to time avoiding continuos calls (in case nobody is answering me) .
Another positive thing is that measuring the power with a good power meter on some band I measured? ?even 7 watts of output.? I'm using the rig with a
the magnetic loop MC-20? or? with a short multiband vertical and it works like a charm. (in FT8 > 4000 miles far away,? in WSPR? 3watts? ?> 8'000 miles).

Re: Which power output to be used with FT8 ?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi Bruno,

?

I checked 2 different X5105 manuals and found the following:

?

  1. No mention of FT8 mode usage.
  2. Only reduced power on AM mode (see below).

?

?

?

When using CW mode at a high duty cycle at full 5W power, I notice the rig gets warm on top. When using FT8 mode at full power you may want to notice how warm the rig gets. It¡¯s only an indicator that you may be stressing the final amp.

I believe the rig also has a thermal shutdown circuit although I could not find a mention in the manuals, so it may actually turn off if you exceed the output duty cycle.

?

Best regards, Lou

Subject: [X5105-Users] Which power output to be used with FT8 ?

Hello
I started to use X5105? in FT8 and? I am very happy .? Everything is working fine.? But now a doubt came in my mind.
It's ok to use full power? of? X5105? (5 Watts) ? Or i should have to use a lower power not to damage the TX ?
The doubt I have came into my mind because on? major TRX like Yaesu or ICOM there are many warning that says for example, not to use more than half of max? power in order not to damage the TX finals due to heavy duty imposed by FT8.
Is this true (heavy duty cycle)? also for X5105 running at max power 5 watts? ? Should I have to use? 3 watts for example to be more safe ?
Thank you for any advice

Re: intermittent power output

Yeah, when you remove the end cap do it very gingerly because there are springs in there that lock the stand in the open position.? Examine how that lock piece is pushed into the notch in the stand before you begin.? Don't let the spring and the end piece get away from you while removing the end cap of the radio.

Good Luck!
