Happy Birthday, Allen Wilson!
2
Just thought it seems appropriate to note that today is Allen Wilson's 200th birthday! As a refresher, he invented the vibrating shuttle, the rotary hook and round bobbin, and the four way motion for the feed dogs. And, of course, he was the "Wilson" of Wheeler and Wilson. paul =---------------------- paul fox, pgf@... (arlington, ma, where it's 56.0 degrees)

Bobbins for W&W 12
2
I am a vintage Singer collector/hoarder and in a recent acquisition found two unusual bobbins. My research led me here and looking at the helpful bobbin comparison document on this forum I think they are for a Wheeler and Wilson 12 machine. I would like to get them to a good home(s). I am in central Illinois and looking for a Singer 301 at the moment. So working out a deal that would re-home a 301 with me or a contribution to my 301 fund, while helping out someone with a W&W 12 would be ideal. -sarah

Thanks for letting me join

Hi all. I recently was given a German sewing machine that several people think is a copy of a Wheeler and Wilson #9. I would love to find a manual for it.Does anyone know where I could get a free download? I have been warned that the hand crank turns over away from me, but I would like more information. Thanks, Liz

New here

Hello everyone! I only sort of have a W&W. I have one of the infamous hybird Singer 9Ws (decals & other clues date it to 1909). Foot print of a Singer, pillar of a W&W, uses W&W feet and bobbins, & has a Singer spool pin. Thankfully mine came with 7 bobbins. (I joke with my husband that those bobbins are part of our retirement plan.) Also, it has a W&W serial number on a plate *behind* the pillar - definitely not a Singer thing to do. But, it sews beautifully. I do hope to acquire a proper W&W eventually. I'm a collector of older machines. Currently I have 17. I gave a newer one to my niece. Another 70s machine is earmarked for my sister. I have 2 others to rehome. I do my own maintenance and rehab. Once all that is done I'd like to get more serious about finding a W&W. Handcrank or head only - I'm not sure yet. So part of coming here is to learn more as I figure out more specifically what I want. I included a couple of pictures (sewing machine tax) and have a short video of her sewing at: https://imgur.com/a/8tVfE3D Thank you for making it this far! ? Agatha

Bobbin question
11
I've been trying to add attachments and other necessaries to my W&W's--purchased a bundle of bobbins for a D9. The bundle included several bobbins that don't appear to be original to W&W's, at least to my knowledge. Photos attached. The ones in question are the darker metal bobbins without a thread hole in the rim. Could these be made by Boye or another manufacturer? I haven't tried them yet to see if they work but it looks like they should. They will fit on a D9 bobbin winding shaft. Any thoughts?

#file-notice
The following files and folders have been uploaded to the Files area of the [email protected] group. * /Singer D1_Dw7 IPB.pdf ( /g/Wheeler_and_Wilson-Sewing-Machines/files/Singer%20D1_Dw7%20IPB.pdf ) *By:* Bill Wells <ronone69@...> *Description:* Singer Parts List 9w1 and 9w7. Form 1686w September 1919. The booklet is the product of multiple photocopies and is not of the best quality. It will not OCR because of the poor quality. If anyone has an original copy I would be interested in obtaining it or a high resolution scan. I am working on rebuilding the booklet with photos of actual parts instead of drawings.

W&W 12
18
Hello everyone, I found a W&W 12 here in Italy. It has yet to arrive, but I saw that it has no needles, can anyone tell me what kind of needles it uses and what are the main differences between the 12 and the D9 apart from size. I would also like to know,if there is a difference between 12 and D12,as there is between 9 and D9,and how I could tell if mine is a 12 or a D12. Thank you Regards Mario

1886 W&W #8 Hand Crank
5
Hello, I joined recently after getting a #8 hand crank. I tend to collect and use treadles and hand crank sewing machines. There always seems to be room for one more hand crank. Having a machine shipped is not my favorite way to get a machine, but it¡¯s the only way sometimes. I was lucky, well the seller was, since they were relying too much on the 8 being bolted instead of latched into the case. It worked out and we were both lucky. Thank goodness with such a nice machine! /g/Wheeler_and_Wilson-Sewing-Machines/album?id=285908

Hello. I wanted to introduce myself as I have been asked to be the new chair of ISMACS, the International Sewing Machine Collectors Society. I am very excited about the prospect and am looking forward to working with the membership to determine what ISMACS needs to do moving forward in order to maintain its reputation as the go to organization for collectors while expanding its reach to bring in new members. If you have suggestions or thoughts on the direction of the organization please feel free to email me at chair@.... Thank you for your patience. Calvin Armerding

9W7 Missing thread controller

I am restoring a 9W7 and it is missing only one part, the exterior portion of the thread controller. It has the coil and the cover but from looking at pictures there is another piece that goes on top of that. Any suggestions on how to find one? Loral

#introduction
Hi All, Thanks for letting me join the party! To keep it brief: Daughter of a weaver & an engineer. Got bit by VSM bug during COVID. Have acquired a fair few machines. (LOL, enough that I often take screen shots of ones I don't ask for, just to prove to my family that I really do pass up A LOT of potential acquisitions...) Am scheduled to pick up my first W&W this evening, a D-9 in a 5-drawer treadle. May need to do this on my own and looking for confirmation that the head is made to detach from the table in the same way these old lovelies usually do (loosen grub screws, pull away from 2 hinges), and weighs 35 pounds, give or take? And the table itself -- similar to a 1900s-era Singer in dimensions and weight? (Usually I can shift these by myself once I remove the head) How possible is it likely to be to detach the treadle portion from the wooden top in relatively short order? (Which would enable me to use a dolly without endangering the cabinet.) I may be able to bring help, which is obviously preferable; just trying to assess whether I could do this on my own if necessary. Thoughts?

W&W bookcase cabinet
11
I picked up a W&W D-9 in a bookcase cabinet on Friday. I've been in love with these cabinets for quite a while and was so excited to find one. It is dirty, musty, and absolutely beautiful. I'm quite confident that the cabinet will cleanup beautifully with some work. It is complete and the treadle works. The faux books are extremely faded. They were originally a deep burgundy, but are almost white now. It will take some thought and research to figure how to add color to them while retaining the gold gilding. The D-9 also needs some attention, but I think it will clean up well. It is missing its front plate, but I can borrow one from my other D-9 until I can find one for this machine. Did I need another D-9? No, no I didn't, but I couldn't pass up this cabinet. Pictures: W&W Bookcase Cabinet

I
Hello Wheeler and Wilson group, I'm Mindy, and reside in the foothills of Northeast Georgia mountains. My father had been hiding this W&W D9 in an old metal building in Tallahassee, FL. He had the head laying on its side on top of the treadle cabinet. Squirrels had been nesting with pine needles, and hiding acorns in the head of the machine. I screaked with excitement. I had been reading about several different treadle machines, and read that W&W's were some the smoothest treadles ever made. It was seized up, and Dad poured motor oil, lighter fluid, and something else down in it. With a little effort Dad was able to free it up. I have asthma, and had to breathe that awful mess for 6 1/2 hrs drive home. The cabinet was in bad shape, and the paint on the head was breaking off in chunks. It's not valuable in its current state, and so I will rehab it for me in the color of my choosing. I was able to sew a few masks in 2020, but have not had the time to set her up. I had to move 4 times in 2020. Moving finally ended once I was able to purchase a home. I can't wait to start sewing again, and I have manage to buy a few feet. I stumbled upon this group, and I am trying to ask my youngest son for assistance in making the adapter. His wife bought him a 3D printer for Christmas last year. I found the patent, but it doesn't have the measurements. Maybe he can use a W&W foot and a Singer foot to craft a presser foot adapter. How to treadle on a D9
4
There are plenty of hand-crank videos of D9s on YouTube and various other brands, but I have yet to see someone treadle with a D9. I¡¯m having issues. When I try to use my feet, the hand wheel always ends up spinning counterclockwise after a second of trying to get it going the other way. Second, when I do kind of get it going (still counterclockwise) just to try to practice, it goes for a bit and then the flywheel gets stuck somehow and I can¡¯t use the foot pedal at all, or get it going with the hand wheel either. In order to start again, I have to move the flywheel itself with my hand to get it started again. Even if I get a good speed and rhythm going, it stops cold for no reason.

Cleaning
8
I¡¯m the type who needs specific answers for specific questions, so I apologize for redundancy. my questions are: can I use pledge to clean the wood on my cabinet? Also, I read that vinegar can help de-rust, but someone said they polished it with aluminum foil?? This seems fishy to me. The main areas I want to hit are the hand wheel, the bobbin plate, and the tension dial thingy. Lastly, is my Singer smo appropriate? I bought it ages ago for my girl Singer 337 and it feels a shame not to use it. Plus, I only need one bottle for my lifetime probably haha. Anyway, I¡¯m attaching pics of my setup if it helps. Thanks guys

Hey group. I¡¯ll preface this by saying I have no clue how an email group works, but I¡¯m glad to be here. I just acquired my first treadle today; a Wheeler & Wilson D9. I¡¯m from California, but living in Virginia for the time being. I have 3 sewing machines now, and probably won¡¯t acquire more as I¡¯m pretty set right now. My dream was to get a treadle and now I¡¯ve got one, but the d9 is harder to find info on/needles for than the lady at the shop told me..so I¡¯m hoping this group can help.
