Wheeler and Wilson #8 hand crank
4
I acquired a #8 hand crank missing plates, a needle bar etc. I have found these pieces and have the machine back together, ?only to find the timing is truly off. I can watch the needle come down late behind the hook and brush against the u of the hook as the needle comes up. I need to know where to start in figuring out how to fix this. I am not ready to give up on this machine.
Thanks Deb

An introduction, and a in OR
8
#8
Hello all,
Thanks for letting me join your group. I'm a newbie to treadle machines from Oregon. I really only caught the "bug" as it seems to be last week when I found (what I now know to be) a Wheeler and Wilson #8 treadle in a local thrift shop for a price I couldn't resist. My initial thought was in hopes it could do some heavy sewing for me, and if not it would make an attractive piece of decor. That mind set has been replaced by a fascination with fixing it up and getting it working again.
I've already managed to find the PDF of the manual on the Smithsonian website and have been using it as a guide while I look things over. I'm guessing someone restored it once to "decor antique" grade, just a simple cleaning of the wood and base and from the smell, a good bit of WD-40 on the machine. I think since then it's been stored in a barn, from the kind of material I'm picking out of it. I've been able to get the machine to turn some, though it is full of grit. I think the WD-40 someone once applied acted as an attractant for all the scum, so I think I'm going to need to take her apart a bit more than most to get the parts freely moving again.
The base and wood seem to be in reasonable condition considering it's age. One of the two "flip up" pieces is missing part of the latch that holds it up, though later on I might look into fabricating a new piece for that. The wood surface seems to be in reasonable shape, as do the drawer fronts. I think the drawers and drawer case need a little love, a few light hammer taps and some glue and will be good to go again. The drawers all have locks, but no key.
I also think the machine spent some time in an antique store as it seems to have picked up a baggie of parts, most of which that don't seem to belong to it. Even a little brass measuring device labeled "Johnson Ruffler", which I gather is from another kind of old machine.
In my looking through the manual, so far I know it's missing the upright bar that holds the spool of thread, and tragically, a piece of the bobbing assembly. While I know my hopes of it running again are diminished by missing part of the bobbin case, I want to get as far as I can with it until then. I've had tons of fun so far regardless.
And it appears my "brief" introduction ran rather long. I'm excited to join you all and learn as much as I can. I'll see about getting some pictures up in a day or so.

Hello, I don¡¯t have a Wheeler & Wilson yet. But I would like to add a treadle so my small herd of vintage machines, all electric, mostly Singers, but I also have a Free and a couple of Free-Westinghouse, and a Necchi. Limited space means I will likely have only one treadle. I've learned to never say never when it comes to sewing machines, but right now I have to assume the treadle will be a one and only. I have become enamored with the W&W No. 8, and find myself watching YouTube videos of this machine in action. So I joined in order to learn more about the Wheeler & Wilson machines. Thanks, Tammy

Photo resizing all done, feel free to upload!
22
Whew. My mouse hand is tired. Our group photos used to take 1.3Gb of storage. Now they take 323Mb. It took the group 7 years to fill that 323Mb. It hope it's a while until we hit the 1Gb ceiling again. Things to know: I've reenabled the Photos section. Images are resized automatically to a maxiumum of 1024x1024 when you upload. Because there are _some_ photos that would benefit from higher resolutions than that, I've also turned on the ability to store photos in the Files section, where no resizing takes place. Please don't do this unless it's really necessary. (I can also temporarily disable the automatic resizing if you really need to upload higher res photos, and want then in a Photos album.) I may enable photo attachments, but haven't decided yet. I think having to create an album and do an upload just to illustrate a point in email is cumbersome. I'll look into it. I did skip a few albums intentionally, so they're still at their full resolutions. Helen DeFoe's photos of, and taken by, Allen Wilson himself, for instance. The "Hertzberg plate" is another. (That one should probably be in Files.) I fumbled fingered while dealing with two albums, and hit "Delete" on the album, instead of on the next photo. So those two needed to be fully recreated, and as a result they now appear as our two newest albums. The orginal creation date is mentioned in the descriptions. I did not change ownership of individual photos back to the original owner -- that would have been a lot more clicks. So all the re-uploads are owned by me. The albums themselves should still have the correct owner -- I hope that's sufficient. If not, let me know. Photos within albums may be in a different order than they were before. If an email thread refers to the album, and pictures were added incrementally over time, the thread might now seem confusing. (Not sure about this.) Also, the album cover picture may have changed, if groups.io was selecting it based on upload order. In addition, if you had set a specific photo to be the album cover picture, that choice has been lost. Summary: if you don't like your album cover picture, change it. (You'll see a checkbox if you "edit" the picture that you want to choose.) If you deleted an album recently to help save space, I'm sorry you felt you needed to do that. You're welcome to recreate your album and re-upload those pictures if you'd like. (In some cases, I may have a copy, if I took my snapshot before you deleted. But I won't upload them without you asking.) Let me know if you see any issues! paul =---------------------- paul fox, pgf@... (arlington, ma, where it's 87.4 degrees)

W&W for sale
I joined this group primarily to help a local Amish family with their machine. Thanks to help from members I was able to learn a little about the Wheeler and Wilson machines and was able to locate the parts the owner needed. If anyone is interested in what appears to be a nice W&W machine and cabinet, there is one for sale in upstate NY. It is not mine and I know nothing about it but here is a link to the ad https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/591015698457168/ Maybe there's a member close by that would appreciate this machine.

Photos permissions
If you read to the end of Mary's and my discussion in the other thread, you'll know that the Photos re-upload is/was imperfect. Since all the photos became owned by me, you can't edit (e.g., change the description) or remove your photos, even if they're in an album you created. I confess I'm overwhelmed by the idea of changing the ownership of every one of our 1300 pictures. So: If you like maintaining your own album, and that includes removing old photos or adjusting their captions, then you'll need to let me know, and I'll happily make you the owner again. Please don't hesitate to ask. But if all you ever might want to do is add new photos to the album, then you're all set. paul =---------------------- paul fox, pgf@... W&W #8 floral decorations?
3
This post is partly a test, because I've enabled attachments for list messages, and want to see if they work. But, in addition: How common are floral decals/decoration on Wheeler and Wilson machines? (You'd think I'd know, since I've looked at ever single photo in our archive in the last two days!) I think of the #8, especially, as having fairly simple decor. But mine (s/n 265383, c.1880) has some delicate flowers (or leaves), in green, on the corners. Do other folks have flowery no.8 machines? paul =---------------------- paul fox, pgf@... Hello from a new member
4
Thank you for welcoming me! I am new to vintage sewing machines. The interest started with a love for Husqvarna sewing machines, and I went and bought a 6020 from 1967 or so, then a Class 12 from 1961. Then a Singer 9W, which is why I came to this group. I am in Toronto.

Hi -- I've started downloading and re-uploading the contents of all of the albums in our Photos section, in order to reduce our storage footprint. Anything uploaded will be reduced to a max of 1024x1024. It's going smoothly. Not fast, but smoothly. :-) I can do an album at a time, and I have a full backup of all of the photos in case I have a thinko and delete something and forget to put it back. But that's unlikely. Access to the Photos section has been turned off for a while. I'll be leaving it like that until I'm finished -- or, at least until we have enough free space to allow new uploads. So -- if the system sends you email saying your album was accessed or edited, or your photos were deleted, that's why. (I don't know if the system does send that kind of mail, but it might.) paul =---------------------- paul fox, pgf@... (arlington, ma, where it's 88.9 degrees)

Looking for hinge for W&W D9 cabinet
7
I have a broken hinge bracket for a W&W D9 treadle. It is the right side hinge for the machine lift. The bracket has a pin in it that goes into the side of the frame and is what allows the support frame that holds the machine to pivot. Anyone have extra Wheeler and Wilson treadle cabinet parts? See pictures in this folder for details of what I am looking for. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ce5h14smqsiv2kf/AABKOQGyWNPwxQ2qWMCjrybNa?dl=0 Thanks for any help you can provide....or suggestions on what to do if I can't get a replacement. #introduction
Hi everyone. I've been collecting old sewing machines for several years now, but last week got my very first Wheeler & Wilson. It's a #8, apparently the later style since it has a different bobbin case. I'm still waiting on needles, so I don't know if it sews yet, but everything turns over smoothly. The table and coffin top are going to need a lot of work, though. I hope it sews well, because I think I love it already.

intro from phylis steelman
[ Phylis sent this to the group owners' address by mistake, so I'm resending it. -- paul ] Thank you for adding me to the group. I am from Chickasha, OK. Have a number of vintage machines, purchased my first Wheeler Wilson #8 last night. It needs cleaning and I am not certain what else. It does move but needs some smoothing out. I have restored some other completely frozen machines in the past but think I am going to have lots of questions about this one. I wanted a Wheeler Wilson for my herd because I began my sewing career on my mother's Wheeler Wilson #9 when I was five years old.

Thank you for letting me join the group. I own two Wheeler & Wilsons. The first one I got was a D9. Hardly any decals but it has become my favorite treadle. I love that it only spins one direction and so smooth. I just added a Wheeler & Wilson #8. Still working on the #8 and hope to have it in it's treadle soon so I can see how it sews. I live in the San Diego area and own lots of vintage machines....but have a particular love for the old treadles. Cathy Stephens

Does anyone have a throat plate screw they would like to sell? Please see the Drop Box Link for where the missing screw would be placed, it can be seen circled in green. The machine model is a 9W7. Mary https://www.dropbox.com/s/hd17gp37vbd59wa/thumbnail.png?dl=0

Sad new -- Miller Fulks
7
I'm sorry to report that I've just learned via the treadleon mailing list that Miller Fulks has died. Miller was a frequent and longtime contributor (founding member, perhaps) to this and other sewing machine communities. I never met him, but I know I will miss his gentle approach, and his extraordinary encyclopedic knowledge of older sewing machines. Thanks Miller. Quoting from treadleon: "...visitation is Thursday 4-8PM Funeral is Friday at 11 AM. All will be held at the Hoover's Grove Church of Christ In Tullahoma TN for those in that area." paul =---------------------- paul fox, pgf@... (arlington, ma, where it's 55.6 degrees)

list ownership status
9
Hi -- A couple of people have asked, so this is just a note so that everyone knows the current list status... Miller Fulks and Dean (went by "Daddy Dean" -- don't think I've ever seen his surname) started this group in early 2013. Everyone lost touch with Dean a couple of years ago, and as we recently learned, Miller is no longer with us. (A few people who knew Dean looked for him last year, to no avail.) When I joined the list a couple of years ago I had a bit of trouble, because Miller was used to letting Dean do the approvals, and so mine had fallen through the cracks. Miller and I both recognized that he could use some help, so I volunteered as a moderator. Soon after, to make sure the list couldn't be "orphaned", Miller promoted me to co-owner, and recruited Helen Howes as a further backup. So now Helen and I are co-owners of the list. It mostly runs itself, other than approving new members. (Well, other than the Photos storage overflow thing. Still working on that.) And that's where we are. paul =---------------------- paul fox, pgf@... (arlington, ma, where it's 62.4 degrees)

Group Host, Is it possible to replace or exchange an old photo in an existing 9 photo album without creating a whole new album? I have tried to do this several times before but the site would not permit adding a photo. Mary

#8 Feed dog adjustment

How do you adjust the feed dogs? What is the correct height? Thank you, Vyrl

Progress with my Wheeler and Wilson No 1.
3
So after cleaning and polishing everything under the cloth plate the machine is much quieter but the sound that I hear now seems to be the needle as it goes through the cloth. I am thinking the needle is too old or not sharp enough. I checked and double checked to see if the needle was hitting anything else and it is not. The feed bar was the one making the noise yesterday and that is now fixed. I'll need to order more needles and see how that goes. The other issue that I am having is the fabric sliding around under the pressure foot. As someone else said there is a way to make the presser foot apply more pressure but I need to take off the whole arm and then get the foot out and replace the spring with a stronger one. First I need to get that dang screw knob off the top to unscrew. I am afraid of breaking it. Thanks for the help. I'll keep on trying. I am happy that it does form a good stitch and that I can at least do that for now. It's a great little machine and am having fun working on it. Jorge
