Hello,

I don¡¯t have a Wheeler & Wilson yet. But I would like to add a treadle so my small herd of vintage machines, all electric, mostly Singers, but I also have a Free and a couple of Free-Westinghouse, and a Necchi. ?Limited space means I will likely have only one treadle. ?I've learned to never say never when it comes to sewing machines, but right now I have to assume the treadle will be a one and only.

I have become?enamored with the W&W No. 8, and find myself watching YouTube videos of this machine in action. ?So I joined in order to learn more about the Wheeler & Wilson machines.
?
Thanks,
Tammy

Hi Tammy,

? There are a couple slight differences in the no 8 from earlier to later production on the model that can be gleaned from this forum.? We have no 8's here and like them but two are hand crank and one that I'm wondering if it'll ever arrive is treadle type.? The biggest issue for me on the no 8 is the small bobbin size related to thread holding capacity.? I've got a 9w coming here that was made after Singer took over and has a much larger bobbin. I'd think for occasional projects it just doesn't matter all that much the size of the bobbin but if you like more modern machines like the Singer 15 and 66 they are easier to use overall.??

? One thing I would recommend is to make a cover for it if it'll be sitting out if the treadle base doesn't already have one.? We use clear vinyl to make our covers to keep the dust out.? There is a trick to cleaning the clear vinyl covers kind of like getting sparkling clear dishes out of a dishwasher but it really makes a nice viewable piece when clean and self supporting if clear vinyl is thick enough.? With the exposed mechanism of the no 8 this could help keep more dirt out, clean and ready for next use.? Also, if you get a treadle and end up with more than one machine that is set up for this some folks make a universal treadle top that has a larger cutout then make pieces that fit in and can accept each machine type.? I have this on my list of projects and a couple Minnesota A bases of which one will for certain have this done.? I'll make a butcher block type top then the inserts will be made differently (likely marine grade plywood with fiberglass/epoxy resin (that will be clear type of layup epoxy)/polyurethane).? We just have too many machines that can be put into a treadle to do it any other way.

Best regards,
Mike
