Did the #3 always have the closing top?
I was looking at a picture of a W&W #3 today, and got to wondering
if any of them were ever made without the flip-up/flip-back top -- perhaps with a simpler bonnet top, instead? Just curious. Most other machines came in various treadle styles, but I'm not sure I've ever seen the #3 look any different. Part of why I was wondering: the picture was from the side, and I realized that the machine has to be pulled out from the wall in order to open it up. I have a Singer New Family with a fold-out bonnet which has the same characteristic... and frankly, it's a nuisance. :-) paul =---------------------- paul fox, pgf@... Tammy -- you had shown me your fantastic #8 cabinet earlier, but I don't think I've ever seen the #9 before. It's amazing! I'm certainly glad we got photos working again here on the group, just to be able to see both of those. paul =---------------------- paul fox, pgf@... (arlington, ma, where it's 59.0 degrees) |
A New Wheeler & Wilson or Two
Ok when I posted my introduction a month ago, I didn't have a Wheeler & Wilson yet, now I have two!
I got a Wheeler and Wilson No. 9. I resisted this machine for an entire month, but the price kept dropping, finally I succumbed. The cabinet is in fine cosmetic shape, but needs a little structural work on the drawers and drawer cases. I haven't sewn on this machine yet. The machine appears in good shape, I think she will sew fine without any work. Just need to get some needles, oil her up and see if I can shorten the belt without it falling apart. If not order a new belt. (photos:?/g/Wheeler_and_Wilson-Sewing-Machines/album?id=253511) But it doesn't stop there, a few days later I spy a Wheeler & Wilson No. 8. This is the machine I've wanted for a while now. This one pops up with the most gorgeous treadle table, I mean in perfect condition. I suspect that the machine may not be complete, but at the price they were asking I didn't care, basically they were giving it away. I was right it is missing the bobbin case and had no bobbins. I thought it would be a really long hunt for the bobbin case, or a beat up donor machine with a case. But I found three bobbins on Ebay for a reasonable?price. ?Some of the prices are just crazy. Then a generous soul on a Vintage Machine forum I belong to offered me the case. ?Should be here next week. I'm over the moon, can't wait to get this guy sewing. (photos:?/g/Wheeler_and_Wilson-Sewing-Machines/album?id=253508) Yes, I remember?I said I only had room for one treadle. ?Now I have three, because I also got a little Singer 24 for my birthday. In my defense the treadles are smaller than they look in pictures. So many new lovelies to play with, this is going to be fun. Tammy |

ruffler I was a bit shocked I thought you were asking me. I wonder if it may help you to have a search on Youtube to see if it helps. One of my machines I think it is my Bradury made in Manchester UK has an issue that if I set a long stitch lenght my ordinary foot will ruffle by accident if your working with thin material. My Singer ruffler foot does look rather complicated. I make me smile how good the engineers were all that time ago. It still makes me laugh how they made button hole and zig zag feet for a straight stich machine. Hope you have some luck sorting it out. All the best ? |

Hi there John,
I was wondering if you had gotten the ruffler to work? I have the same box of attachments and can't get the ruffler to make ruffles. The instructions in the box don't seem to help much. I'd love to get some more info and maybe the link to that page you mention. Jorge |

Hi Tammy, ? There are a couple slight differences in the no 8 from earlier to later production on the model that can be gleaned from this forum.? We have no 8's here and like them but two are hand crank and one that I'm wondering if it'll ever arrive is treadle type.? The biggest issue for me on the no 8 is the small bobbin size related to thread holding capacity.? I've got a 9w coming here that was made after Singer took over and has a much larger bobbin. I'd think for occasional projects it just doesn't matter all that much the size of the bobbin but if you like more modern machines like the Singer 15 and 66 they are easier to use overall.?? ? One thing I would recommend is to make a cover for it if it'll be sitting out if the treadle base doesn't already have one.? We use clear vinyl to make our covers to keep the dust out.? There is a trick to cleaning the clear vinyl covers kind of like getting sparkling clear dishes out of a dishwasher but it really makes a nice viewable piece when clean and self supporting if clear vinyl is thick enough.? With the exposed mechanism of the no 8 this could help keep more dirt out, clean and ready for next use.? Also, if you get a treadle and end up with more than one machine that is set up for this some folks make a universal treadle top that has a larger cutout then make pieces that fit in and can accept each machine type.? I have this on my list of projects and a couple Minnesota A bases of which one will for certain have this done.? I'll make a butcher block type top then the inserts will be made differently (likely marine grade plywood with fiberglass/epoxy resin (that will be clear type of layup epoxy)/polyurethane).? We just have too many machines that can be put into a treadle to do it any other way. Best regards, Mike |

Hello,
I don¡¯t have a Wheeler & Wilson yet. But I would like to add a treadle so my small herd of vintage machines, all electric, mostly Singers, but I also have a Free and a couple of Free-Westinghouse, and a Necchi. ?Limited space means I will likely have only one treadle. ?I've learned to never say never when it comes to sewing machines, but right now I have to assume the treadle will be a one and only. I have become?enamored with the W&W No. 8, and find myself watching YouTube videos of this machine in action. ?So I joined in order to learn more about the Wheeler & Wilson machines. ?
Thanks,
Tammy |

I didn¡¯t know there were 4 different glass feet for a 9. I thought there was just 1 made for the 8. Brenda On Thu, Jul 30, 2020 at 8:37 PM Jon Helig <jlhmnj@...> wrote: Hi, |
W&W for sale
I joined this group primarily to help a local Amish family with their machine.? Thanks to help from members I was able to learn a little about the Wheeler and Wilson machines and was able to locate the parts the owner needed.? If anyone is interested in what appears to be a nice W&W machine and cabinet, there is one for sale in upstate NY.? It is not mine and I know nothing about it but here is a link to the ad??
Maybe there's a member close by that would appreciate this machine. |

I should be thanking you for your patience, and helping us figure out how to get things working. > > Now that Miller has left us and Dean is incommunicado are you the > Group Owner? Yes, along with Helen Howes. Helen's pretty busy with a lot of other lists, and life, so mainly she's just holding the extra set of keys to the list, as it were.
