Ouch. I didn't know it would even be that much. I want to get the GIVI

be good.

That sounds encouraging, I hear tales from other bikers of them having to replace tyres every 2 or 3000 miles...but they probably have bikes churning out 3.5 million BHP.

I am heading towards 10000 miles on my Conti Tours <> . The guy who sold them to me uses them on all his bikes and says it's not unusual to get 12 - 13000 out of them. I am going to put on another set this winter. Great tire for me - good grip, wears like iron - but I do not ride very aggressively.

Well the CBF250 is going back and being swapped for a real 'scooter'!! All the other bikes are too high. We went through 2 other scooters first, 2 yamahas but they turned out to be as high or even higher.

The cbf wat too high, missing the left mirror and teh clutch was too loose.

Now I've never ridden a scooter before. How difficult is that going to be?? My front brake is going to be where the clutch lever is I believe and the rear brake where the front brake is (right hand).

Re: accident - NWC

Martin Taylor

Hi Laura,
I owned a yamaha Majesty scooter for two years and it was brilliant. The only things to watch out for are that a scooter will NOT handle the same as a motorcycle, and you will not have the same engine braking effect when going into bends due to the automatic drive. The instructions will probably tell you that you need to hold the front brake on while pressing the starter otherwise the thing will not work. The reason for this being that if you happened to have the throttle open while pressing the starter, you would take off at a rapid rate to the horizon. Also the starter motor will not work at all if the side stand is down. Sometimes you will probably notice the machine will creep forward on tickover while at lights/crossroads etc as you can never disengage the drive.
Have fun ( but "real motorcyclists" will probably ignore you.. could never work that one out!!)

I replaced all my signals and the tail light with after market ones.
I am having some problems. The tail light works great with the stock
signals, but once I hooked up the new signals the tail light pops a
fuse each time I turn the bike on. However, the signals all work
properly without the tail light on. My turn signals all have triple
wires. How do I wire the back signals since there is just two wires
going to them? Also, should the rear signals be off when the bike is
on? Trial and error is not working, 5 fuses blown with no luck.

The best day off.

Murray

Yesterday (Friday) I had to have the morning off to look after three
of
the kids (School holidays), while Jen took the little one to the
optomitrist. Had a good morning, went and got the boat trailer road
legal ready for Monday, opening day for the trout fishing season.

Just before lunchtime I was reading the paper and having a coffee
when
my boss phoned to say she had dealt with the urgent jobs I was going
to
do in the afternoon. She asked, seeing as it was a lovely day, if I'd
like to have the afternoon off as well and make a 4 day weekend. No
second thoughts needed there.

So within about 2 minutes I had the bike out and the gear ready. Jen
came home about 5 minutes later and was quite happy for me to
disappear
for the afternoon.

I decided to go to the Bealey Hotel which is on the Eastern side of
Arthurs Pass from here. This is an Alpine pass through the Southern
Alps. The ride was brillent. I live on the coast so we are going from
sea level to the mountains. The roads are all good with everyting
from
open farmland to bush right down to the edge of the road, tight
twisty
stuff and enjoyable sweeping bends as well. The ride there took just
over an hour and was about 100km's. I had a relax at the pub and
enjoyed the scenery for an hour and headed home. I turned off at
Jacksons to come home around Lake Brunner to have some different
scenery. All up it was a 230Km trip.

A great day. I learnt that my bike will do 200km's before hitting
reserve. I struck a patch of rain grooves on a bend in the mountains
and know what you mean when you say the front tyre will follow the
grooves! A guy in the car park came over for a chat and was very
impressed with the W650.

I should have taken my camera, I took some photo's with my phone but
they are pretty small when put on the computer, next time.

Cheers
Murray

The Florida coast around Appalatcheecola has man-eating flies. The
Florida Keys has bugs called no-see-ums that can go right through
window screens. And central Florida has swarms of love bugs that
congregate in roadways during mating season and can blind you by
totally covering your windshield or glasses with bug guts in a metter
of seconds. Like mosquitos, they are attracted to CO2. I need to
wear a mask when I'm driving my tractor to keep from inhaling them.--

Re your comment about the Appalachian Trail, I met an interesting
chap where I was over-nighting near the Maine/New Hampshire
border.
We chatted briefly the evening prior then had breakfast together
the
following morning. In his early forties, I think. Originally from
Australia and was somewhat familiar with older bikes (Triumphs and
BSAs). Turns out he was hiking the entire Appalachian Trail for
the
second time (apparently on average a 4 to 6 month proposition,
depending upon the skill of the hiker).
In 1979(?), my girlfriend and I decided to travel around the
states. We
visited her family in Lowell, Massachusetts for a while. <<Strange
factoid:
I met a priest at a church fair in Lowell who was a friend of Jack
Kerouac
and had done the service at his funeral.>>

We were really into backpacking so decided to "do" the Trail. We
started off
at Mount Moosilaukie and spent a couple of days going uphill, then
downhill.
It was beautiful and we were drinking water right out of a rushing
creek
full of snowmelt. We got caught in big thunderstorms and camped in
snow. But
when we hit the bottom, the mosquitoes hatched out and ate us
alive. That
was also my first experience with those tiny black flies.

When we called her sister to come rescue us, our eyes were swollen
shut, our
hands were swelled up and we could hardly flex our fingers. I'll
never
forget the high-pitched sound of millions of mosquitoes in the
forest. We
lasted a week.

Later, we found out you should start at the southern end and walk
north to
avoid snow and most bugs.

Best thing will be if you fly me and my bike over to New England
from Old England, then you can give it a good tryout on roads you
know. Can't say fairer than that!
I have to say that my initial feelings are that the Versys would be
highly unsuited to dirt roads due to it's rather revvy nature. I
think what you need is a W650 engine in a Versys frame. That's a
little job for the weekend....

What follows is a true story, Pete.

Last Wednesday (a week ago) I stopped at a bike dealership as I
was
riding through Maine. The reason for the stop was to check if they
might happen to have a Versys on the floor (Kawasaki dealer).
Imagine my delight when I discovered they did! (First one I've
seen.)

Better yet, being a Suzuki dealership too, they also had a V-Strom
on hand (granted, not the 650 model I am interested in, but the
1000
model instead). The sales fella I was speaking with volunteered to
take both bikes out in the yard and start them up for a better
comparison. Not being from the area, I mildly discouraged him from
doing so, but he insisted ¨C and, suffice to say, I did not let my
objection to the idea get out of hand. :-)

I got to sit on both bikes. Please don't be offended, but my
initial
impression of the Versys is that it's not a pretty bike. However,
I
had a similar experience the first time I saw a V-Strom on a show
room floor. Looked at it. Thought it was ugly. Sales fella also
thought it was ugly. So I didn't give it much attention. (Looked
at
prettier bikes instead.) Later discovered all the great things
about
the Strom and after many subsequent views, guess what ¨C it doesn't
look so bad now. So the initial impression of the Versys is not
important at this time ¨C with further inspections and all the good
stuff I'm hearing about it ¨C I'm sure it'll look a lot better with
time.

Anyway, the amusing part is that as I rode away I had the very
distinct thought that what I really needed was for Pete (that
would
be Pete Cordell from the W650riders forum) to buy a Versys. That
way
I would be able to get a 3-way W/Strom/Versys comparison from
somebody who would know all three very well. The thought, however,
was a fleeting one. Imaging my amusement when I was catching up on
the W650riders postings and discovered you had actually purchased
a
Versys!! :-)

I am hoping that as you get to know your new friend you will pass
along tidbits of information regarding how the Wee Strom and the
Versys compare in ways that would be of interest to somebody who
is
hoping to take a cross continent bike tour sometime during the
next
few years. Will include a lot of unpaved roads (trans Labrador in
the Northeast and Yukon/Alaska in the Northwest) and probably
quite
a bit of luggage. One of the things I like about the 650 bike size
is that if I'm out in the boonies and the bike does down on some
dirt, it's not so heavy that I can't lift it up by myself.

Delighted to hear about your new toy (though a little disappointed
to hear you are actually considering parting with the W). Will
probe
further on this topic after you've had more time to get to know
the
Versys.
