Re: I've Done It (I think)

I think that, in fact, the air drag does push against the front of the box, but I also think that pressure lightens the front wheel by pushing against the box...I think that because, one, my manual said so, and two, because when carrying a passenger the box doesn't get the same amount of air flow and my Venture never weaved when riding two up.

Top boxes create a low pressure zone behind the rear wheel. They generate
drag, but the high pressure air is pushing against the front of the box and
does little more than slow the bike. Also, top boxes are invariably sitting
in the midst of the turbulence created by the rider. They may well actually
marginally improve aerodynmamics by filling in some of that low pressure
zone.

They do however bugger up the C0G...:-)

.. On the W the low pressure is generated behindf the rider and the rider is
forced back into that zone. Because the rider resists being pulled back, the
force is directed down through his arse onto the seat which squashes the
rear suspension. The pillion fills in that hole and their low pressure zone
develops behind them BUT it isa lot less because rider plus pillion make a
longer more aerodynamic shape.

My Venture has a warnning attached to the trunk lid, it says do not
exceed
85 MPH with luggage attached. The Ws I have owned wander at 120 MPH or
so
(but didn't with Marcia sitting behind me, so I think it is
aerodynamics).

The top box didn't affect the CB 400 F up to where it leveled off at 100
MPH, and I rode the Nighthawk 650 up to 100 MPH without a problem with a
box
on the back, which doesn't mean that there would not have been a problem,
had I gone faster.

You won't get one. The Police one's weave for the same reason the W
does...Big coppers punch a big hole in the air and create a BIG low
pressure
zone. The cops are scratching their heads because their Pans are fitted
with
up-rated load adjusting shocks but they'll still sometimes but not always
weaving at high speed. They've cottoned on to the extra weight thing, but
not the torso size of the rider. They haven't yet spotted that its the
big
chested burly officers that are getting the problems.....

Think I should tell 'em?

Jon

I took it up to speeds in excess of the normal motorway speeds and no
weave at all. however mine will have the top box fitted so I will find
out
if that has an adverse effect

Cool!

Now you can get embroiled in the famous copper killing weave
debates
that are consuming all the Pan riders at the moment.

I spoke to a Pan riding copper last month and I'm pretty sure its
the
same as the W weave!

As some of you will know recently I have been considering a more
touring style of appliance. Today I rode tested a ST1300 Pan European. I
was
offered a really good trade in for my CB1300S against a brand new Pan
complete with a package off accessories worth 850 for less than the list
price of a standard bike.
Hopefully I will be concluding the deal next week

Re: I've Done It (I think)

Aloha John,

I think the key word in your question is "need", and if that is what you mean, the W doesn't need tinkering...but some of its character traits have inspired tinkering.

To me, the Brittish or European look is enhanced by lower bars..like the ones that are OEM on later W models sold in the UK..I haven't tinkered with that yet, but it is on my list.

Ws tend to have a long warm up time, many members of this group have tinkered with the carbs/air boxes to "fix" this..not really a problem, but it does inspire tinkering.

The tires it came with were adequate, many better choices are available..a lot of tinkering/experimenting with different tires has been done by group members.

The W is actually a pretty simple machine, very versatile, so, there have been many different aspects of tinkering on this bike..but bottom line, it is a good machine as delivered and with all our tinkering, few people have been able to actually hurt it.

There two aspects of my enjoyment of bikes. I like to ride them and I like to tinker with them. That given, I like to always have ONE that doesn't need tinkering! My Excelsior henderson always needed tinkering. Is that the case with the W?

that
Hondas, most Hondas aren't characters like the W is, my CB 900 is a

Rauri,

The first sentence begins with "Venture", I must have been distracted when I wrote "W".

W # 1 has done an indicated 115 MPH, no weave.

W # 2 has done an indicated 105 MPH, and has presented a pretty respectable weave at speeds over 90 MPH.

Re: Weave WAS I've Done It (I think)

I meant Ventures wandered at 120 MPH ( I read W on my post, but I didn't type that on purpose, I must have been distracted), my first W, a 2000 bought new, has seen 115 MPH indicated..any occilation on that bike can be contributed to trade winds..45 - 60 MPH. On stretches without severe winds, the bike just moves along..at 115, I hadn't been winding long, in fact hadn't been in 5th long.

W II dances about at speeds over 90 MPH unless I move back on the seat..moving forward, towards the tank, has fixed this kind of problem on other bikes..didn't on W II though.

I have had the second W up to 105 MPH indicated..held it there for a while, and it didn't seem like it had any more.

Thanks Jon
I am hoping the needles help the 2000-3000 RPM surge too. The bike is
a CA model with the "Special Needle". I backed the pilot jet screws
out 5+ turns and the idle kept going up. So far infact that one of the
screws fell out and I lost the spring while I was riding. The Screw
looks undamaged as it just sat between the starter and engine. I will
order a new screw along with the jets and needles.

The KLR needles are fine. Main jets only matter after 6000 rpm with
stock
airboxes the 122's will be spot on.....all you need to do is fiddle
with
needle height. Start with the needles at their lowest ( leanest) point.
They'll still be better than stock there but lifting them one notch

4000 to
6000 rpm...That's where the stock ones fall down once decent pipes are
fitted!

Good luck!

Hi Jon
I just got my bike, it was shipped from California to New Hampshire,
and so it took awhile. It is currently fitted with fish pipes but not
rejetted. I would like to have a go at it and would like some advice
on the best jets/needles. Based on your previous recommendations I
have located the KLX 300 needles and thought I would get a 122 and a
112 main jet in case I go back to the stock pipes. Would you recommend
going with the Kawasaki jet/needles or aftermarket like factory pro.
The Price is not much different when you start using combinations. The
bike still runs poorly during warm-up (30 minutes of riding) and I
have adjusted the pilot screw out to the point where the bike started
popping off throttle. I also checked the carburetors' synchronization
and it look good. I am hoping it is not the vacuum diaphragm. Anyway
thanks for your help.

Front and rear wheel travel

I want to check the sag on the new Works springs and shocks that I just installed on the W. I can't find what the travel is in the manual. I'm sure somebody knows and would appreciate the specs.

Thanks in advance.
