Remember that the W is a machine, it is not a Honda appliance..there will be whirls and whistles, and a clunk every now and then..this bike has character, and it just may take a character to own one.

Bl**dy typical I spend ages looking for a minter and get one that is
virtually spotless, with a full service history, that has obviously
been well cared for by the owner, not thrashed and it is a
***problem*** bike. I have decided that if I can't get it sorted by
the end of the summer then I am going to get rid of it and look for
something else....I am so p*ssed of right now. The bikes are not going
well, we have just got some work, which means my dream of going to Uni
is over....Arrgghh

If these suggestions don't work, see if you can get to ride with and
swap with another W owner. There are more of you closer together
over there.

Perhaps you have a typical W650, but it doesn't sound like it, it
unfortunately sounds like you may have a problem bike, and if you get
to compare with another you'll know.

lower

My Ninja 600 was pretty bad about the clutch sticking on first start of the day, my cure was, put the bike in first gear, then start it, with the clutch in of course..it might be just a little more work for the starter, but it makes for less gear shavings in the tranny...

That's incredible mileage. I'm surprised he ever went over 30 mph!

A mystery. Here's my start-off procedure if you think it'll help. Got it
by
amalgamating others' on this group. Sorry to teach granny to suck eggs,
but
I wondered if it's something to do with going into gear at the higher
revs
you keep mentioning.

I always warm her a bit up to 2000-2250 with the choke on, and shove in
the
choke completely before heading off. This prevents me forgetting to put
it
in later and fouling the plugs, which doesn't take long if you ride with
the
choke out. . This procedure takes a few minutes in winter and right now,
in
the good weather with my richer #38 pilot jet in, only 20-30 seconds. So
when I put her into first with the clutch disengaged, while idling at
maybe
200-500, I have no revs going at all hardly. So little scrunching going
on. Then I rev up to 2000-2500 at least and let in the clutch and chug
up
my steep driveway.

About 50% of the time mine goes into 1st fine but gives a big jump and
graunch of protest, esp. if cold. I think it's the clutch sticking. If
I
don't pull firmly & fast from first into second it'll graunch there too.
Going down I have to be firm and fast on the tap or it might do the same
from second-first.

I've forgotten how many miles are on it, have the valves been adjusted?
(thinking bags of nails sounds). Never had electrical whines or bevel
whines (touch wood).

Remember, many say this bike loves a good "thrashing, "caning" etc. I
have
resolved never to baby mine, I twist that throttle whenever I can even if
just to get up to revs in town. More fun.

Go compare with another W, ride it hard for a while, and see.

I have trying to get my son Mike to ride the W around, I am sending him this as it just might give him incentive to be one of only two Ws at the Rock Store. The Rock Store is where I saw my first ever MV Augusta, and Muholland HWY was the first place I ever went 150 MPH (that was on a friends FZR 1000).

Haven't seen another W here in the Los Angeles area either. We ride almost every Sunday to the Rockstore in Malibu, Cali, where you see pretty much every kind of motorcycle. Jay Leno always rides up with bizarre looking bikes or cars. Every time I ride up on the W, people just gather around it because they never seen one and most have no idea what it is. Matter of fact my husband was a little upset (haha) everyone is checking out my bike and not his pristine cafe racer 04 Triumph Thruxton.

All the Ws were left hand shift, as most Japanese bikes have been.

Some, like the Bridgestone GTX 350, or the Yamaha XS 750 had the gear shift
shaft go out on both sides though, so they could go either way.

Make sure the shift lever in snug on the shaft. These bikes have a
pretty long throw and if the lever is loose you can have problems with
getting a positive gear change.

Thanks Nige I'm sure we will. If it rains we have planned some trios out on the train especially as it cost us nothing.
You must tell me which forecast you are using as the ones I have seen on TV & on line are giving sunshine & showers

No I didn't test ride, other than a 50 yard burst up the road, the
gear change didn't clunk, and on the back of one other. And yes you
are right every little noise I will be jumping all over. As to being
pleased, I love the torque and the fact it romps reasonably quickly up
to 90, which, as I was expecting it to actually be slower
accelerating, than it is is a bonus.

Nige,

You really need to get it alongside another w650 to compare like for
like.
Right now you are sensitised to the slightest little thing, and the
glass is
going to be half empty rather than half full. It doesn't sound to
me that
there is anything major wrong with the bike and that some of the
issues are
just "getting used" issues with any new bike.

I don't know whether you test rode before you bought (other than the
bike
you bought) but it is possible to "believe" you want a particular
bike so
much, but when you ride it , you feel let down - mainly by its
failure to
live up to expectations. I know when I got the first GTR, I
actually wanted
a 900 Trophy triple. I rode the GTR first and was pleasantly surprised.
Then I rode the Trophy and thought it was poor. I was gutted.

Also, Nige, I forget what oil weight you are using, if it's 20W-50 go
to 10W-40. I assume your clutch lever is adjusted OK.

The clunky gear changes may be because you still have a little too
much oil. I find that with too much oil in my W (ie. *just* below
the
max. line), my gear changes get pretty chunky because the clutch
drags
a bit. Bring the oil level down to exactly between the upper and
lower
lines and your shifting may improve (worked for me).
