Re: Arrgghhh...I can't make up my mind whether I hate my...

They always graunch into first from cold. I just hold the front
brake and
push it through.

The whine is simply the bevel. It's just snug. In the manual there is
a note
about adjustment and it talks about whether it is preferable to have
a whine
when cold or hot. Mine whines cold but rattles a bit when hot. Yours
sounds
lovely and tight. As you use it the whine will diminish. I suspect
it's been
ridden very gently and needs running in.

The 'electrical' whine is common and is actually something else. I
suspect
it is a pressure differential somewhere. If you disconnect the
battery it
carries on!. The W has a fairly clever anti-vapour system in the tank
and I
reckon that has something to do with it.

My car however really does whine when stopped and turned off. . If
you open
a door the active suspension computer wakes up and makes a whine for
30
seconds while it waits for someone to get in so it can adjust the
spring
rates!

warm she still crunches from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd. The

There is a whine once the revs hit 3.5k, regardless of gear, and as
a result I am getting more and more p*ssed off with this damn bike.

getting
to the stage where I want to ship this bike out and replace it with
a Honda! The noise has now gone without me finding out exactly what
it was....obvious suspect is the alarm.

I am more worried about the whine at 3.5k and above...anyone else
got this? Could this be result of me turning the bike off when the
revs were up and hearing a terrible clunk, as the pistons stopped
dead, as I previously described...I certain don't remember the

On the flip side this bike is so forgiving, it doesn't matter what
revs you go into a corner at, as she will pull out of the bend. It
is nice to bimble along at slow speeds. My route was through some
pretty villages, with thatched cottages and down lovely twisty
roads. And then to hit dual-carriageway and shoot past a Ninja and
a
Suzuki GS500 at 85-90mph (allegedly). So atht emoment it is a love-
hate relationship, which, as this was meant to be my reliable, no
tinker, bike is a bit disappointing!

In addition I decided to do a gearbox change on the RZ, removing
the
black 3 year old oil and replacing with the Silkolene Light Gear
Oil
(as used by many on the forum) to end up with sticker gearchanges
and a buzzing noise (like a nut loose) than I had using the rubbish
that was in there....not a good weekend!

Bl**dy typical I spend ages looking for a minter and get one that is
virtually spotless, with a full service history, that has obviously
been well cared for by the owner, not thrashed and it is a

So I was riding on MacArthur Blvd this afternoon, and some dude wanted to turn left onto a street I was going to turn right into.?? I kinda did a double take at the front of his bike, it looked so familiar... He turned onto the street right behind me and followed me for several miles.?? I kept looking in my rear-view... Dang, that bike profile looked familiar! We finally pulled up at a light, and I looked over at his bike -- Nice Bike, I said. Likewise, he said!

His name is TJ, he lives in DC, he bought his 2000 Dub last year from someone in Frederick, and he didn't know about this group -- so I told him.?? I sure hope I wrote down his e-mail addy correctly!

That was so cool!?? There's no mods on his bike that I noticed, either, and it's pristine.?? Not like my poor SAKI who's feeling her 50K miles!?? :)

So that's my excitement for today.

??? Does anyone have access to your key ??
This reminds me of the father of a friend of mine. Back in the 60's he got rid of a big car with a V8 and bought a VW Beetle. He was being "ribbed" at work about his little car and would?justify himself by bragging about his great fuel mileage.
?Several of his co workers got together and started bringing pint bottles of gasoline to work and pouring it into his tank. He was soon bragging about getting 80-90MPG out of this amazing little car !
? After a couple of weeks they reversed the joke and started siphoning a gallon a day out of his tank.
? They toataly blew his mind and when the "smoke cleared" they all had a good laugh about a fairly harmless joke.?? Thanks for the memories !

Dennis,

The "trick" part of the 270 crank for the XS 650 isn't the crank, its a two piece and can be disassembled and rotated..the pins line up at 270..no 180 though, the trick is the cam chaft that goes with the kit.

The cancelled New Norton 962(may be off on the cc's) ended up as a 270 crank, they claimed it ran smoother than a 360 crank.

My two stroke twins have all been 180 cranks, since a two stroke fires every
revolution, would just be two singles if they wer a 360 crank (Ossa's 500
was a 360 crank, but I never rode one of those).

Honda's CA 72/77 Dreams, and the 125/150 Benlys were 360 crank, single carb
bikes for sure, and I think that the 1968 - 1976 CB 350/360s, CB/CL
were..but I would have to look that up. I think, also from memory, that the
CB 160/175s, Twin Stars (ugh), Rebels and Nighthawk 250s were also 360
cranks.

Honda's CB 72/77 Hawk/Super Hawk were 180 cranks as were the original DOHC
CB 450s. I had a newer 450 Hawk..the 3 valve per cylinder SOHC thing, which
I think had a 360 (ugly appliance looking engine, unlike the original 450
which had one of the best looking motorcycle engines ever in my opinion).
180s for a small "revver" 4 stroke seems appropriate to me.

Yamaha's XS 650 came with a 360, but there is an an Australian made 270
crank that is getting a lot of attention on their site. Supposed to be
smoother, better power delivery..never rode one with that crank though.
