Re: Arrgghhh...I can't make up my mind whether I hate my...
They always graunch into first from cold. I just hold the front
brake and push it through. The whine is simply the bevel. It's just snug. In the manual there is a note about adjustment and it talks about whether it is preferable to have a whine when cold or hot. Mine whines cold but rattles a bit when hot. Yours sounds lovely and tight. As you use it the whine will diminish. I suspect it's been ridden very gently and needs running in. The 'electrical' whine is common and is actually something else. I suspect it is a pressure differential somewhere. If you disconnect the battery it carries on!. The W has a fairly clever anti-vapour system in the tank and I reckon that has something to do with it. My car however really does whine when stopped and turned off. . If you open a door the active suspension computer wakes up and makes a whine for 30 seconds while it waits for someone to get in so it can adjust the spring rates! Bl**dy typical I spend ages looking for a minter and get one that is
virtually spotless, with a full service history, that has obviously been well cared for by the owner, not thrashed and it is a ***problem*** bike. I have decided that if I can't get it sorted by the end of the summer then I am going to get rid of it and look for something else....I am so p*ssed of right now. The bikes are not going well, we have just got some work, which means my dream of going to Uni is over....Arrgghh --- In W650riders@..., "Ruari McLennan" <r.mclennan@...> wrote:

I kinda did a double take at the front of his bike, it looked so familiar... He turned onto the street right behind me and followed me for several miles.?? I kept looking in my rear-view... Dang, that bike profile looked familiar! We finally pulled up at a light, and I looked over at his bike -- Nice Bike, I said. Likewise, he said! Also, Nige, I forget what oil weight you are using, if it's 20W-50 go
to 10W-40. I assume your clutch lever is adjusted OK. If these suggestions don't work, see if you can get to ride with and swap with another W owner. There are more of you closer together over there. Perhaps you have a typical W650, but it doesn't sound like it, it unfortunately sounds like you may have a problem bike, and if you get to compare with another you'll know. much oil. I find that with too much oil in my W (ie. *just* below the max. line), my gear changes get pretty chunky because the clutch drags a bit. bl**dy W or like it.
The oil was over filled, as I said before, and today I dropped 600ml out to get to just below the maximum mark. The syringe method didn't work as I couldn't the flexible hose past the last gear on the cluster. However Ruari's idea of putting the bike on the centrestand and then putting same size bits of wood under the front and rear wheels worked a treat. I had already checked the rear sprocket and the chain, which has no tight spot and is perfectly adjusted. The clutch lever is also by the book as regards free play at the lever and I took my heated grips off, as they meant I lost half an inch of travel on the lever. Due to the cr*p weather this was the first time O had started it since June 1st. I keep her hooked up to Optimate trickle charger, still took a couple of dabs on the starter but off she went. I tried to put her in to 1st only to receive a baulk and a scrunch. However I then figured it might because I am trying at too high a revs. SO I blipped the throttle a few time and dobbed the choke in and wey hay into 1st she went. Even so, once warm she still crunches from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd. The rest of gears are sweet going up and not to bad coming down the box. There is a whine once the revs hit 3.5k, regardless of gear, and as a result I am getting more and more p*ssed off with this damn bike. Went for 45 minute run through the country lanes, topped off with a 90mph ride back down some dual-carriageway (allegedly officer).Park her up and then started working on my RZ, go back into the garage to hear a high pitched, low volume, electrical whine...now I am getting to the stage where I want to ship this bike out and replace it with a Honda! The noise has now gone without me finding out exactly what it was....obvious suspect is the alarm. I am more worried about the whine at 3.5k and above...anyone else got this? Could this be result of me turning the bike off when the revs were up and hearing a terrible clunk, as the pistons stopped dead, as I previously described...I certain don't remember the whine before! :>( On the flip side this bike is so forgiving, it doesn't matter what revs you go into a corner at, as she will pull out of the bend. It is nice to bimble along at slow speeds. My route was through some pretty villages, with thatched cottages and down lovely twisty roads. And then to hit dual-carriageway and shoot past a Ninja and a Suzuki GS500 at 85-90mph (allegedly). So atht emoment it is a love- hate relationship, which, as this was meant to be my reliable, no tinker, bike is a bit disappointing! In addition I decided to do a gearbox change on the RZ, removing the black 3 year old oil and replacing with the Silkolene Light Gear Oil (as used by many on the forum) to end up with sticker gearchanges and a buzzing noise (like a nut loose) than I had using the rubbish that was in there....not a good weekend! |

The "trick" part of the 270 crank for the XS 650 isn't the crank, its a two piece and can be disassembled and rotated..the pins line up at 270..no 180 though, the trick is the cam chaft that goes with the kit. From: James Franklin To: W650riders@... Sent: Saturday, July 07, 2007 6:35 AM Subject: Re: [W650riders] Re: bring back the w650 to the us - Petition My two stroke twins have all been 180 cranks, since a two stroke fires every revolution, would just be two singles if they wer a 360 crank (Ossa's 500 was a 360 crank, but I never rode one of those). Honda's CA 72/77 Dreams, and the 125/150 Benlys were 360 crank, single carb bikes for sure, and I think that the 1968 - 1976 CB 350/360s, CB/CL were..but I would have to look that up. I think, also from memory, that the CB 160/175s, Twin Stars (ugh), Rebels and Nighthawk 250s were also 360 cranks. Honda's CB 72/77 Hawk/Super Hawk were 180 cranks as were the original DOHC CB 450s. I had a newer 450 Hawk..the 3 valve per cylinder SOHC thing, which I think had a 360 (ugly appliance looking engine, unlike the original 450 which had one of the best looking motorcycle engines ever in my opinion). 180s for a small "revver" 4 stroke seems appropriate to me. Yamaha's XS 650 came with a 360, but there is an an Australian made 270 crank that is getting a lot of attention on their site. Supposed to be smoother, better power delivery..never rode one with that crank though. Re: Today...
I am never on my W when I come accross another one....besides in the showroom, I can't remember seeing two of them in one place.
With litterally thousands of bikes in Daytona, I saw only one other W, and we were going in opposite directions. James Franklin 2411 Pine Summit DR. First off to all that replied about the mpg weirdness: no, I'm fat as
ever, still revving it pretty good, and I think I've the only key. But I bought the bike here in Maryland, so maybe it's just happy to be back. And to answer you Rose, I'm in southern Calvert and St. Mary's county area, so way south Maryland.
