Re: Exhausts & retro noise
Which could also lower the resale value of the
bike. Not just because it has a funky, non-reversable tone, but because if I
looked in the exhausts and saw that they had been modified with a hammer, I'd
pass on the bike. 'cause I'm doubting the fella measured the airflow before,
then after, and jetted accordingly. Now if you had a spare pair of stock
mufflers...

An old Triumph expert suggested that I should just sharpen a piece of
narrow rebar, and hammer it through the stock exhaust/baffles bit by bit
until the sound deepened. Anyone tried this? My Canadian exhaust is one
of those from which the stock baffles cannot be removed (as per the
California exhaust diagram in Files). The baffles start well inside the
exhaust.

I got a reply from MikesXS. They said the originals were very loud, essential straight throughs. So they had a chamber created inside the muffler to redirect the air and quiet them. SOOOO looks like, unless that chamber can be removed, these are not going to be the sound you are looking for.
I was looking at my stock exahaust and was curious. Could a
welder cut the cross over off. Weld plates inplace of the crossover holes, and then remove some of the baffeling from the stock?
I know it would be a lot of effort. I will find out in the next few days if it can be done and how much. (IE have a friend who does
this.)

Hi Ruari, I saw you posting about the posh exhaust system, from the
info I have found on Japanese web sites the posh comes as an entire system with a new single wall header pipe which will blue, the cost is about 106,000 yen last I saw. If you want anything from Japan talk to the people at Windbell motorcycles in North Van. Their # is 604-990-9876 e-mail is www.jpgreybike.com. I got my tt100's there and they said they could import most parts from Japan. I live in surrey if you are comming over give me a call at 604-501-1448. By the way my name is Grant, good luck.

There is a B40 BSA on ebay not far from me, I ahven't seen
it, and in truth probably won't be able to as I?have left it too late
methinks, as I dismissed it as I want to be able to ride it on the road and this
looks as if it have never been registered.
?
There is also a Morini, same as yours, but it has a single
2-1 zorst, again going not far from me. He hasn't put how mnay miles down on the
description but he has a picture, which shows it as having done 35k...its up for
500 quid.
Depends on what information you have about it. This is roughly the
procedure, taken from the VMCC handbook who assist members in
registering old machines:
If you do not have the original reg number
you can apply for an age related number. You would need to fill in an
application form for a Statement of Search, which you send to the VMCC with
?6 if you are a member or ?14 if a non-member. When the VMCC return the
Statement of Search, you take it to the local VLO together with a current
MOT, evidence of identity & your certificate of insurance. They will
probably then arrange an inspection of the machine.
If you are trying
to retain the original registration the procedure is slightly different
& involves having the VMCC inspect the machine rather than the VLO. I'm
not sure how necessary the inspection is since I am sure that the NACC offer
a similar service but rely on documents and photos sent to them, with a
rubbing of the frame/engine number. I think the BSAOC offer a similar
service.
I'm not sure what difference there is if the trials bike has
built from bits of various bikes (which is what I am hoping to do). You can
get day-time MOTs. If it is pre-74, you can have a bulb-horn and no
lights so you don't need to worry about adding lights etc if it hasn't
already got them.
Have you found one you're wanting to
buy?

Some Serrows are dual start (electric and kickstart). Perhaps we all ought to get together and do a trails day in Wales - they have accomodation so could travel there the day before or something. I won't be able to manage for a while as my Morini has set back the finances for a while, especially as I have two holidays to fund! --- In W650riders@..., "nige_1959" <nigel.denton1@...> wrote: I have fancied going greenlaning for ages. mind was a) don't buy a cheap bike like a Bashan or another of these Chinese imports, as they don't last as well as Jap, KTm's etc and b) get a bike, unless it is an old 2 stroke, with electric start (the Serrow has one), as the last thing you want to be doing when are totally nackered, in a muddy puddle up to your knees, is trying to kick over a hot 4 stroke single.

OK. So that's a 2-stroke noisy bike then. Quite like the
idea. Are they
cheap could I have them as second bike? KTMs look cool, definitely too high. A friend just had to

very
low geared and have absolutely NO seat...just a painted
black area approximately where the seat would have been.
Other off-road sports are:
Motocross where the bikes are tuned for power and like
trials, have no
lights and are not road legal. MX bikes actually handle
really well but
are stupidly tall to give them masses of suspension
travel...expect seat
heights in excess of 960mm. Proper Supermotos are basically
Motocross bikes
with
road front wheels on.
Enduro...Where the bikes are very similar to motocross
but are more
softly tuned with gear ratios more suitable to road use, and
have lighting
sets. These bikes are usually road legal in the UK and make
literally stunning
commuters. In all seriousness, you would have to try
very hard indeed
to
find a better bike than a late model Honda XR250 for
general urban
duties. They weigh...brace yourself...230 lbs....under half your
Harley...and
30
bhp in a bike that light makes for serious performance. My
old Yamaha
465
with 42 bhp would shut down any musclebike under the sun up
to 60 mph.
A lot
of Enduro bikes were bought as 'greenlaners'. Green lanes
are Roads...i.e.
'Rights of way open to all traffic' which were not
tarmac. In other
words, forgotten about or not used. Because they were roads,
bikes still
had
to
be fully road legal and obey national speed limits. They
are often just
muddy tracks across moors and rivers and to be honest, full-
on Enduro bikes
are not designed for such tricky and challenging narrow
paths....But
being
macho men we used 'em anyway!
Trail. These bikes are less extreme and less robust.
They have less
suspension travel, less power and are often more
civilised. You used to
find some in every makers range but today in the UK, only
grey imports
are
found. They were popular amongst older trail riders ( the ones
who knew
what
they were doing). James has mentioned the Yam Serow, the
Kawasaki Sherpa and
so on, but older bikes like the XT250 were very good and
frankly, the
XR250
Honda is so good and usable it'll cross into both camps.
All off-road bikes are brilliant fun, combining punchy
motors with
incredibly light weight. Both motocross and Enduro bikes
have to
have
superb handling stability because they are built to win races
on bumpy rough
ground and as a consequence, round town or the lanes, a
motocross or enduro
bike with road oriented tyres on usually blows 'proper' road
bikes into
the
weeds.
They are incredibly comfy too...really soft seats and
amazingly good
suspension make for a real armchair riding position.
Very high credibility too......

Trials? Is that motocross? exciting. I like the idea
of riding
in the woods, think it's called greenlaning. Liked
riding on the grass at the rally next weekend. Laura, here's some trials riding:
