Re: Couple of newbie questions.
You have to pick your speeds...I usually end up sitting on a glove, trying to sort out some issue with a flapping strap or whatever, and watching the bars like a hawk as I wait for the shimmy to start!
My front Avon solved the problem initially but it came back eventually. It's just a thing they do...like the old Commando's used to....

Jon, that sounds exactly like my shimmy. It is only noticeable when you take your hands off the bars and goes away when you put them back on. If however you continue with the 'no hands' style of riding, it gets a lot worse. I've just had an avon roadrider put on the back wheel and have now arranged for the matching front to be fitted next, so we'll see how we get on with 2 new tyres. I know there is usually no need to ride no hands, but there are times when you have to use just one and I would like to have the confidence that the bike won't throw a wobbly.
Thanks,
Pete
--- In W650riders@..., "Jonhaddock@..." <jonhaddock@...> wrote:
The shimmy is common to many bikes and is cured by a small amount of
friction. The best place to find it is in the front tyre contact patch...The
stock front wears badly and the contact patch almost shrinks to nothing. A
decent single compound ( i.e. not a stock Accolade) tyre transforms the bike
and pretty much sorts the shimmy. I used an Avon Venom .
You should only notice the shimmy if you take your hands off and just a
light touch restores equilibrium.
If it still persists enough to annoy, buy a steering damper...That shimmy is
what they are built for!

Hello everyone, just got my W650 a few weeks ago and a couple of issues
have arisen. probably been dealt with before but who knows.
Handlebar Shake: when throttling back from 50+ or so mph, the handlebars give a wobble/shake at between 45-50mph, ok if you've got
both hand on the handlebars, but if for some reason you don't, there is
a noticeable shimmy until the speed drops to 40-45mph. Thought it mught
have been down to a worn (very) rear tyre, but a new one has made no
difference.
Momentary cough: sometimes, the engine gives a 'cough'. It alwaqys recovers instantly and then won't happen again for the rest of the ride.
Any suggestions for these issues, or are they all like it?
Thanks
Pete

Thanks for that info Dennis. Stock 130/80 sidewall height =
104mm 100/90 sidewall height = 90mm So with a 14mm sidewall height
difference x 2 as there are two sidewalls in the diameter) the rear has
28mm or one inch taller overall sidewall height than the front tire. So the
stock 100/90 19 and the stock 130/80 18 fully assembled and inflated are
actually the same size. If this is true then why go to a 120/90 rear and
upset the balance?

hi all, i've just replaced the front brake pads on my w. using the printed off instructions from the files section. being mechanically inclined to a certain degree i was a bit reluctant about starting this project. i have had the pads for about a week now. i didn't want to mess things up and go without riding until i could afford the dealer doing the work to fix whatever i unfixed. well let me tell you, it ought to be a crime for something to be so easy. less than ten minutes start to finish and i was back on the road again. when it comes to doing the back brakes i hope it will be as easy. i have been reading and learning about the w in this group. most everyone is very knowledgeable about these bikes. my main reason for writing is to let the new owners of w's know that there is good information here, and a willingness to help. don't be afraid to try somthing. thanks to all who answer questions and provide this usefull info. keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down. see ya, allen.

Other off-road
sports are:
Motocross where the bikes are tuned for power and
like trials, have no lights and are not road legal. MX bikes actually
handle really well but are stupidly tall to give them masses of
suspension travel...expect seat heights in excess of 960mm. Proper
Supermotos are basically Motocross bikes with road front wheels
on.
Enduro...Where the bikes are very similar to motocross but
are more softly tuned with gear ratios more suitable to road use, and
have lighting sets. These bikes are usually road legal in the UK and
make literally stunning commuters. In all seriousness, you would have
to try very hard indeed to find a better bike than a late model Honda
XR250 for general urban duties. They weigh...brace yourself...230
lbs....under half your Harley...and 30 bhp in a bike that light makes
for serious performance. My old Yamaha 465 with 42 bhp would shut
down any musclebike under the sun up to 60 mph. A lot of Enduro
bikes were bought as 'greenlaners'. Green lanes are
Roads...i.e. 'Rights of way open to all traffic' which were not
tarmac. In other words, forgotten about or not used. Because they
were roads, bikes still had to be fully road legal and obey national
speed limits. They are often just muddy tracks across moors and
rivers and to be honest, full-on Enduro bikes are not designed for
such tricky and challenging narrow paths....But being macho men we
used 'em anyway!
Trail. These bikes are less extreme and less
robust. They have less suspension travel, less power and are often
more civilised. You used to find some in every makers range but today
in the UK, only grey imports are found. They were popular amongst
older trail riders ( the ones who knew what they were doing). James
has mentioned the Yam Serow, the Kawasaki Sherpa and so on, but older
bikes like the XT250 were very good and frankly, the XR250 Honda is
so good and usable it'll cross into both camps.
All off-road
bikes are brilliant fun, combining punchy motors with incredibly
light weight. Both motocross and Enduro bikes have to have
superb handling stability because they are built to win races on
bumpy rough ground and as a consequence, round town or the lanes, a
motocross or enduro bike with road oriented tyres on usually blows
'proper' road bikes into the weeds.
They are incredibly comfy
too...really soft seats and amazingly good suspension make for a real
armchair riding position.
Very high credibility
too......

Re: :WAS goodwood breakfast club NOW MBS STRIKES AGAIN
Not two stroke. Very few trail or enduro bikes are
two stroke and those that are tend to be surprisingly quiet unless they've been
played with. Motocross bikes were two stroke up to a few years ago and even
today all the major manufacturers still build two stroke MX bikes. They are so
much better than 4 stroke it's laughable. To give you an idea, the only way to
get four strokes to compete with two strokes in motocross is to let 250 cc four
strokes run with 125 two strokes, and in the 250 cc class, ANY capacity four
stroke up to at least 500cc is allowed to compete against the 250cc?2
strokes.
?
Most trials bikes are two stroke, most Enduro and
MX bikes are now four stroke. A two stroke MX bike is a very VERY quick machine
indeed. Imagine around 65 bhp in a 230 lb bike...basically the same power to
weight ratio as a Fireblade but instantly available. Instant wheelies in the
lower gears...general terror!
?
No, the four strokes are fine...If you can find an
XR250...have a bounce. Please note, the XR400 and XR600 are MUCH taller, don't
confuse them...the 250 is definitely the best.

OK. So that's a 2-stroke noisy bike then. Quite like the idea.
Are they cheap could I have them as second bike? KTMs look cool, definitely
too high. A friend just had to have his food reshaped as he came off doing a
wheelie at 70 (we think). Laura

Yes, they ARE high, some higher than others,
but the Honda XR 250's are OK. I find I can manage those? well with my
27" inside leg, but I can't ride the KTM's for instance.

I've sort of been interested in
them as they look comfy (riding position), well the ones I saw but don't
know what they were. But they are mostly high aren't they. Thanks for that
long explanation really helpful.

That
is modern trials...The bikes are 250cc or 300cc two stroke singles,
tuned for instant wheelies with loads of bottom end grunt. They are
very low geared and have absolutely NO seat...just a painted black
area approximately where the seat would have been.
Other
off-road sports are:
Motocross where the bikes are tuned for
power and like trials, have no lights and are not road legal. MX
bikes actually handle really well but are stupidly tall to give them
masses of suspension travel...expect seat heights in excess of
960mm. Proper Supermotos are basically Motocross bikes with road
front wheels on.
Enduro...Where the bikes are very similar to
motocross but are more softly tuned with gear ratios more suitable to
road use, and have lighting sets. These bikes are usually road legal
in the UK and make literally stunning commuters. In all seriousness,
you would have to try very hard indeed to find a better bike than a
late model Honda XR250 for general urban duties. They weigh...brace
yourself...230 lbs....under half your Harley...and 30 bhp in a bike
that light makes for serious performance. My old Yamaha 465 with 42
bhp would shut down any musclebike under the sun up to 60 mph. A lot of
Enduro bikes were bought as 'greenlaners'.
Very high credibility
too......
