Re: Rear Fender redux

I think we have the new part number on file on the website, but I did
write it down in my datebook -- unfortunately, I wrote three different
numbers. I think the right one is 35022-0025. I ordered the new and
improved model last November and it still hasn't arrived. Last I heard
it was backordered to Japan. I'd be anxious to hear how you make out
with your order.

Cheers,

Ray Ford.

Thanks for the excellent service, you have just sorted out my
birthday present, (69th, thats why my tyres last a long time).
Incidentally, I used the other spelling for those over the pond. I
thought it was quite clever at the time.
Thanks again

Yes, the front Venom, or indeed a front Bridgestone BT45 would be
fine.
There's nothing really wrong with the rear...The BT45 is better,
but if you
get good mileage, it follows you don't 'ear'ole' it much so the
benefits of
the rear BT's stick sidewalls would be lost.

If the front has developed a 'step' where the centre treads have
become
raised, you might not want a BT45 on the front as the raised ridge
is
symptomatic of the dual compound front tyre wearing wrongly due to
your
riding style ( mine too!). The BT45 might also wear in that
way...Although
no-one has reported it doing so yet.

I need a new front tyre and have been reading Jon's epistle on the
subject (message no. 126572, 20th April 2007 'Older but not
wiser')as
well as many others. I have an almost new stock Accolade on the
rear,
(the way I drive it will last for years), would a stock size
Venom go
with this? Currently the front is a stock Accolade.

When I put my Excelsior on the dyno at Daytona Bike Week's AMI dyno shooout, the crowd started gathering. By the time it whupped every Harley except?a specially prepared tgrailer queen that was built for nothing but dyno shootouts, and?was pushed?pushed from the?trailer onto the dyno, the crowd was screaming.? A year and a set of great cams later, when my Excelsior beat a Hayabusa at Phil Peterson's Miami Harley Davidson Anniversary Dyno shootout, even the dyno guys were aslking me to do additional runs. The Hayabusa had been brought in to embarrass the Harleys. When I beat him, the whole crowd was ready to elect me presidnt.?There's nothing like the sound of a prepared?EH at seven grand. O, I almost forgot, the only thing that will draw a bigger crowd, is four-gear burnouts -? Great way to get rid of old hard rubber when you buy a new tire!
As for board tracking, I didn't even have THAT much nerve when I was a teenager!

Time for tune-up

Pop quiz ('cause I don't know the answer):

Engine pinging on acceleration or uphill, and exhaust popping (like a
baby backfire) on downshift are symptoms of what, specifically?
Mixture? Carb asynch? Something else?

I also looked long and hard at those Velosolex(es?)? Why, oh why, am I doing this?? Hazel, Jon, and many others have this weird?interest in mopeds etc.? Now, against all my better instincts and perhaps through osmosis, I start to feel a strange interest too...? I had forgotten for years that my first bike at age 16 was some kind of red Italian moped (make unknown, it had been repainted many times), and the laughter and teasing I endured then from my mates while puttering up and around?the hills of Lochalsh to a maximum of 28 mph.?? Why would I even think of it now?...

Re: fork spring suggestions, please

Best thing I ever did was add the progressive springs! First time I went to grab a handful of
front brake. Prepared for the nose dive......not there. Bike just smoothly slowed and into
the corner I went.

NOW, there will still be some nose dive. But I promise you will not fatague like you are
now. I also upped my oil weight to 20 and would possible have gone 30. (I am 6'4" @
235lbs.)

The spacer issue is not that big of a deal. Take the factory spacer and trim it down.

Check out my blog at It is about the second or
third post from the top. I tried to detail the steps involved.

The roads here are a bit dodgy and I'm also not too keen on the
proverbial nose dive the W takes on hard braking (a frequent
occurrence for us city riders). So, I'm looking to upgrade my
springs with progressives.

I know where to get the Hagons, but they are rather pricey. I also
know where to get Progressive springs (much less expensive, but
require a spacer). And, my mechanic just threw out a third choice -
Race Tech springs (which are in between the other two in price).

So, for those of you who have done this upgrade, my questions are:

1) which springs do you recommend (is there any that you strongly
recommend AGAINST)?
2) for those that require a spacer, have you found any
issues/challenges/tips with this?
3) does anyone have a good source for the Race Tech fork springs?

Thank you!

Maybe a shallow dent.? I have not had success with the method though. I'll try it on a shallow dent on my Dodge.

I've also wondered about heating the tank or other similar
dimpled/dented sheet metal ....by putting it out in the hot summer
sun.....and then placing crushed dry ice in the dent cavity to shrink
the metal in the dent area where it had been stretched.

Pretty cheap, worth a try I guess.

Vernon

on it. I had to do considerable bodywork, but freezing lifted the
metal to a level where I could bodywork it.
