Re: Low idle, uuah? How to remove idle mixture adjustment screw caps
Thanks, Ruari. I'm still so impressed that these rides demand very little of us outside of proper, scheduled maintenance. I'm guessing tomorrow I will have to make another minor adjustment but not worried now as I was actually tweaking the adjustment at the stop light!?
Being able to ride it daily undeniably prevents any starting/running issues that come from sitting long periods of time. |

开云体育Great! As someone else mentioned, be careful not to unscrew that black idle speed knob too far. It’s apparently a horror show to replace it in the threads. Ruari On Mar 14, 2024, at 2:21?PM, jseconds77@... wrote:

Re: Low idle, uuah? How to remove idle mixture adjustment screw caps
Ok, here's the update.
Bike continues to start right up and this am, halfway thru my commute slid enrichener slide all the way in, per usual and bike did not miss a beat. Upon arrival, lo and behold dropped into idle at 1,000rpm. So, no idea what caused the idle to change. At the end of the day, starts right up and off I go. Slide enrichener back in after proper warmup and reaching operating temp on the highway. At the final light before home, idle sits at 1600rpm, too high. Readjusted while hot at home, back to 1,000rpm. I might have to do it again to find the 'sweet spot'. Love how Kawi included this magic black knob for the most simple idle speed adjustments. My previous classic ride? Ha! Full on carb sync and air/fuel mix adjust. Tiring. On the highway, didn't miss a step. Reminder, bike goes only one street down before having to immediately hit the highway at 65mph so I know it's not full op temp wt that point, even if ambient temp was 85 degrees. This is just how the Dub is; very lean and old man easing into the tub. But what a ride once all squared! |
Re: Low idle, uuah? How to remove idle mixture adjustment screw caps
开云体育There is the black idle speed knob; and then there are the idle mixture adjustment screws underneath each carb which come sealed with a glued-in aluminum round cap from the factory. If you search the “Files” at this group’s website you’ll find a detailed explanation I uploaded years ago of how I removed the caps without having to take the carbs off. Re: Low idle, uuah?
You don't have to remove the carbs to do the fine idle adjustment. Just FYI. Good luck.? On Wed, Mar 13, 2024 at 11:32?AM <jseconds77@...> wrote: Thanks! I know carb removal on W is a pain. I wanna avoid it and think this is possible. Will report back this week how subsequent rides go |
Re: Low idle, uuah?
That idle adjust knob can be very stiff. You can give it a good clockwise?twist and see if you can get it moving. I'd avoid counter/anti clockwise - you don't want to accidentally unmount it.?? Are you running with a fuel filter? That will catch extraneous particles that could cause a clog. Any old filter will do - mine was a lawnmower filter. If you can get hold of a bottle of Chevron Techron, try running that (or, better yet, fill the carb bowls and leave it sit overnight.) Others will chime in - but the other thing to consider is the -other- idle adjustment, the one that requires pulling the caps and using a small screwdriver on the bottom of the carbs. But I'd want to rule out either contamination or worn needles, first. Good luck.? S On Wed, Mar 13, 2024 at 9:50?AM <jseconds77@...> wrote: Hi all, |
Low idle, uuah?
Hi all,
My Dub continues running like a champ (knock on wood) but the last day or two I noticed a change. After adhering to the usual starting protocol, once reaching operating temp and fully moving the enrichner slide back in my idle RPMs are uncomfortably low; 600-800 area. Didn't know it could idle that low! So, no struggles at highway speeds nor stalling or any 'hunting' for idle but the correct idle on mine was always 900-1,000 like clockwork. I know about the magic black idle speed knob but gently turning it clockwise to raise idle RPM has yielded nothing and it only turns very little. I did not see anything binding it and sprayed with lubricant. I don't wanna force it for fear of breaking it. Bike easily kicks over and runs well and a 'quick fix' is simply leaving the enrichment slide out slightly to ensure no low RPM at idle, but we all know this solves nothing. Thoughts? We know not plugged pilot jets because of easy starts and it does idle and no stalling. Not main jets because it does it's normal routine in 3rd gear 4800rpm at 65mph I believe, no odd noises.? Thanks everyone! Disclaimer; ridden daily but due to new area it has to hop right on the highway after a block, this not reaching full operating temp until I basically reach the destination of a mere 7+ miles one way! |
Re: high pipes
Thanks so much for the info ?
Much appreciated. Well, I'm a old timer too, and I must be gettin real old because I have always had loud pipes. I guess it's just finding that right level: just obnoxious enough without annoying whole towns. ? I had read about the passenger peg situation, but haven't had a pillion for a while, so no prob there. Thanks again!? |
Re: high pipes
The sound is not too loud, just about right for an old timer. Wouldn't have been loud enough in my youth. I prefer the W2 sound over the W. I have not recorded the W but I do have a recording of the W2. I did have to put a stack of washers on one of the mounting bolts to get the proper spacing. It has stayed nice and tight all these years. The heat shield fell off pretty quick so I picked one up on ebay and has worked fine. Rear peg on muffler side is too short for a passenger. No jetting change.
