After Action W5N MG 043

开云体育

Don and I headed out this morning to meet up with AA7OY , Dale, at trail head parking. Started the hike up around 1700 UTC. Nice hike up the ridge line with very few problems. Weather was nice with winds, my guess, around 15 to 20 mph. This is a new one for Dale so we made sure he set up right on top. see pics for fun? Dale only lacks about 6 points for his triple goat. Hope his next summit is a doozie HI HI. 73 all WB5USB Geo

With very few trees on top this on is a good winter peak. Nice views. see previous pics for fun. Wear gators if you have them. Mostly sunny with temps in the 50's and winds about 10 mph.

The hike is an easy bushwack climb that is quite enjoyable to a large AZ that has plenty of space for a few ops to spread out, relax and work some DX on 10 meters while soaking in the view.
A nice little summit to bump up your unique score.
Big thanks to Conor for reminding me to write this up.

Cool as I headed out to trail head parking with Scott a few minutes behind on his way to Mount Taylor. Its been a while since I got this one. Parked by the two tanks (see GPX file Drive) then hiked .8 miles to the summit. (see GPX file Hike).? The first part on the hike is steep and covered with small lava rocks, but no problems switch backing up the ridge line. The last part is easy hiking up grassy meadows to the summit. ? Set up my antenna right on top at the rock pile and found a nice flat area to set up my portable chair. Roads up are SUBARU capable with dry ruts. Mostly smooth with areas of exposed rocks.
Started on 28 MHz and was swamped with DX and local stations. Band conditions were very good. 73 all enjoy the pics? Geo WB5USB

W5N Monthly Activity Summary: October 2024

It was a quiet month, but not without some highlights!

First, an initial activation in the Gila by Dale, AA7OY. Deep Creek Divide is pretty far out there in the western portion, part of a large cluster of unactivated peaks that Dale seems to be chipping away at. Nice work Dale, let us know if you have a trip report.

Don, Tim and George were pretty busy, doing three 3-person activations for W5N/AP-010, W5N/SC-007, W5N/SE-022. That's a lot of miles!

No visitors this month, but we picked up a new activator, KV4PF, from Rio Rancho. His activation of Sandia went on for hours and picked up well over 100 QSOs on FT8.

What'd I miss? Reports follow.

They share the same database so naturally stay in sync. In my humble opinion, sotl.as is light years ahead of the original SOTAmaps. :-)

Do most people use the sotlas website over the sotadata, or are they both useful in their own way?? Are they linked so that someone spotting on one of the sites, will also be seen on the other?

8112

For what you are wanting to do, I suspect 8112 would be right up your alley. ?Not far from ABQ, that is, half way to Cuba off 550, plenty of off road, rocky, GREAT views all the way, probably won’t encounter anyone else up there, and you can go around, in other words, return by a different route.

The only way the hike from the gate to St Peters could be easier is if it was down hill both ways.

Elk is /PW-012

play with the sotlas site and you will find details on all the area peaks.

Don't worry Fred....I don't go where I don't belong!? I've ridden up to Capilla Peak, but didn't bring my gear....so that's a return trip for sure.

And I hate to be a bother, but can I get the full summit codes for Elk Mountain and 8112 please?? There are quite a few Elk Mountains and I can't find 8112.

I sure appreciate the suggestions and feedback everyone!

One time I rode my e-mtn-bike all the way up, BUT is was tough to carry it pass the gate with the drop off on the cliff side. It was possible with a 50 lb. bike, but would take a crew to lift a motorcycle over the gate. It is just not worth it for the straightforward hike.

Don’t count on getting your motorcycle past the gate! Facing the peak, there’s a drop-off on the left side and boulders obstructing the right side.
