Locked West Coast, in search of a 16
Hello, I would like to add a Van Norman 16 to my shop, but options are slim out west. If anyone has one for sale, or sees a listing, please let me know. I am in Eureka California. Thanks.

Locked Yahoo Group data recovery 2
I was looking into whether it might be possible to recover the VN Yahoo Group from the Internet Archive, since they did a big data download a few years ago when Yahoo was shutting Groups down. Unfortunately it turns out the VN group was Restricted, so its data wasn't saved. I did see in the group metadata, however, this flag: "messageAttachments":"STORE_ON_SITE_AND_INCLUDE_IN_EMAIL" Is there anyone here who was a member of the Yahoo group and might have old group messages/attachments archived in your email? Or, by chance, is whoever was a moderator/owner of that group still around and may have downloaded the data when Yahoo sent their announcement email? We might be able to save a lot of that information that way.

Locked VN No.12 From Bethesda Naval Base: Looking for Service Manual 7
Greetings, The machine that this post refers to is a Van Norman No.12 machine that once served on the Bethesda Naval base. It is well used and worn but everything save the coolant pump system works on it. I have searched and searched the internet for a long time and have yet to find a PDF of a "service" manual for my VN12. I am looking for service specifications so that I can remove the Spindle head clean and adjust bearing clearances to what they are supposed to be. I have checked my 5v spindle taper and it has 0.002" to 0.003" of radial runout. The spindle also moves a few thou if I give it lateral force with my hand. Needless to say one tooth is always taking a deeper cut than the rest and tool life suffers and surface finish not to mention squareness is less than desirable. If someone could point me in the direction of a service or military manual for the Van Norman No.12 machines or even for a machine of similar head design I would greatly appreciate it. I also understand that there is a possibilitity that the runout may not be fully remedied by servicing the head, but I want to give it the best chance it has. I have a full cabinet of arbors, collets, holders and cutters for it. It would be a shame to put this machine to rest.

Locked Van Norman 22Lu Update
I have been busy locating parts... I think the machine is about as well equipped now as it can be. I've located both overarm supports as well as the outboard stiffener or brace also have acquired a horizontal indexing head and the drive gearbox. Although the gearbox was not complete all the important parts are there...I'm missing a few gears, I believe I have four out of the set, both 24 tooth gears the 64 and the 100, I have drawings and blanks to make the full set of 11 gears and I'm now making the shaft with two universals to go to the head. my next project is a new elevation handle shaft as mine seems to have been broken somewhere along the line and someone attempted to repair (as in drilled for to large a dowel for alignment and welded (poorly) the parts back together (no real penetration) so it probably broke right away, so new shaft...I have done a number of engineering drawings for parts so I'm building a library and together with the site manager for Van Norman over on FB we may make some limited production of some hard to find parts...Time will tell

Locked Is a VFD safe to use on a VN12? 7
I'm considering running the spindle motor and power feed from two VFDs as I've seen it elsewhere. However I'd like to make sure with more knowledgeable users that running the motor at a higher RPM is safe for the motor, gears, and transmission. Should I be worried about the cutter head overheating from running it faster than intended? Thanks

Locked VFD on Mill
Your better off putting a VFD rated motor. then you can slow it down or speed it up. Insulation on normal motor will heat up if speed is changed from 60 hz

Locked Van Norman 12 and VFDs
Guys I don't run VFDs as they are counter productive for my set up. I run a #12 VN and a model TL Hardinge. With what I have I would need 4 VfDs or some sophistcated software to change my VFDs on the fly. The Hardinge has a double wound motor capable of either 3/8 or 3/4 hp at the flip of a switch. The #12 has both a 1/2 and a 1.5 hp motor. The smaller for table speed the larger for the spindle. If you are going to use VFDs set them up for the correct Volts, horspower and frequency. I you are worried about overclocking your motor simply dial down the Hz. If you are really worried build your own 5 hp phase converter from a 5 hp 3 phase motor and a kit from Ebay or Amazon. 220 single phase in, 220 3 phase out . You can generally run up to 50% of the rated hp of the conveter motor. I only run one machine at a time and my phase converter can handle the applied 2 hp of the mill at the correct Hz .

Locked 777 boring bar 6
Hi everyone and thanks for helping me in advance. I have a VN 777 boring bar. I believe the starting capacitor has gone out. There are no useable numbers on it. By chance, does anyone know what value I need to use? My friendly electronics and electric motor rebuilding shops have been zero help. Also, is there a way of determining approximately the age of the bar if I provide the S/N? A small bit of extra info, The motor is a 1/2 hp GE, 1750 rpm as far as I can tell. The id tag is nearly impossible to read. I'm just guessing [hate that word] that it's a start capacitor. The motor has a centrifugal mechanism in the motor back cap. I can't get access to it for fear of damaging it. I can't reason the capacitor being a run cap because of it. Heck, I might be all wet in my thinking. With I've read on the net, I'm going to start with a 70 uf cap and see what happens. I have a universal cap also that I can try. I'm waiting for a seal to arrive so I can put the motor back together. The motor doesn't have a front plate, it's part of the boring bar. Need to assemble the whole thing to test the caps. Sorry I got a bit windy here but I thought a further explanation might be warranted. Thanks for all your help,. Shirley.

Locked VN12 Transmission Bearing #7487 Alternate PN-Correction
Here is my photo of the VN12 Gearbox or transmission bearing #8065 with Italian RIV PN 3AAJ. Again, previous mention that this was a replacement for the ND 5130 was not correct. This bearing is on the shaft end opposite of the ND 5130.

I am in the process of rebuilding a #12. The silent chain and small sprocket are worn. I found a replacement at Ramsey Products Corporation but their price quoted through Motion is very high, as in $600+. Is there alternative supplier for these components?

Locked VN12 Transmission Bearing #7487 Alternate PN-Correction
First an apology. In my haste I made an error. I found my marked up drawing after sending the message. The RIV is NOT an alternate to the ND 5130, but for the bearing on the other end of the shaft, the #8065. I can get a photo of the 3AAJ later.

Locked VN12 Transmission Bearing #7487 Alternate PN 2
Relative to recent discussion of the transmission gearbox bearings. When I disassembled my machine to get to the bearing #7487, which has been identified as a New Departure 5130, my bearing was marked with Italian manufacturer RIV with PN of 3AAJ. This is a self-aligning Ball Bearing Double Row. After a lot of searching, I found this source for RIV bearings:https://www.247industries.com/s/en/bearings/3AAJ-RIV/599569 I purchased one off of their Ebay store and can see no difference between my original and the new one. While my machine is still in pieces, I have been collecting the bearings and seals to reassemble, and was happy to find this replacement. When I got my machine, this bearing was completely frozen due to moisture intrusion and the bottom half of the bearing was rusted solid. I managed to get it freed up with Kroil and a lot of effort, and used the machine a few times before the building burned down. I am now in the process of rebuilding the machine. Hope this helps.
