This is the first thing I thought about. Can't quite remember, but I think my VN
shell mill arbors "top out" at 1-1/8" shell bodies ... making larger shell mills pretty much
unusable.

So the question, never sent to Norman: ... 1-1/4" _shank?_ or 1-1/4" cutter? On a VN,
"it may matter". It took ~20 years to find the 3/4" and 1-1/8"? adapters I have ...
"hen's teeth".

{or maybe my 'larger' is a for a 1-1/4" body, and my memory messed this up.
Or maybe driving the 75 miles 'was a showstopper'. I dunno.}

Long-time lurker here:

If you've got the bucks, a traditional collet supplier such as Royal or Hardinge _might_ be able to quote and make just about anything that fits in a VN taper.

They have the drawings of the taper.

They have the expertise.

I have two shell mill arbors, one has a 1/2” pilot and the other has 3/4” I think. I don’t shell mills for them yet. Some people modify R8 tooling to fit VN. ?I have intended to order something in R8 just to see try it. ?You could always make one from scratch too. Setting the compound for an accurate angle should be the only difficult part for me and even that shouldn’t be too hard.?

Looks like my 50 taper ?shell mill arbors are available from 3/4” to 2 1/2” dia drive shaft/ key bolt so a large range but then the 22LU is 5 hp on the spindle drive and 1 1/2 hp on the gear box ( power feed ) box.. hope this helps. Bigger machines= more drive power and heavier duty work. Cat 50 taper makes it easy to find tooling as most new CNC machines use it with pull buttons ( but those are removable )?
