Locked VN No.12 From Bethesda Naval Base: Looking for Service Manual

Greetings,

The machine that this post refers to is a Van Norman No.12 machine that once served on the Bethesda Naval base. It is well used and worn but everything save the coolant pump system works on it.

I have searched and searched the internet for a long time and have yet to find a PDF of a "service" manual for my? VN12.

I am looking for service specifications so that I can remove the Spindle head clean and adjust bearing clearances to what they are supposed to be.

I have checked my 5v spindle taper and it has 0.002" to 0.003" of radial runout. The spindle also moves a few thou if I give it lateral force with my hand. Needless to say one tooth? is always taking a deeper cut than the rest and tool life suffers and surface finish not to mention squareness is less than desirable.

If someone could point me in the direction of a service or military manual for the Van Norman No.12 machines or even for a machine of similar head design I would greatly appreciate it.

I also understand that there is a possibilitity that the runout may not be fully remedied by servicing the head, but I want to give it the best chance it has.

I have a full cabinet of arbors, collets, holders and cutters for it. It would be a shame to put this machine to rest.

I found a fair amount of info on the site. Free but take donations. I don’t have my VN 12 anymore but good machine.?

Greetings.?
You likely only need to remove the spindle head cover and clean out with kerosene or your choice of non abrasive metal safe de-greaser.?
If your machine has the pre-1947 cutter head: Grease bearings and gears with Lubriplate Syn EBM or Mobilith SHC 100.
If your machine has post-1947 cutter head: Grease bearings with Lubriplate Syn EBM or Mobilith SHC 100 and the gears get Mobile DTE Heavy Medium.
If your machine has pre-1947 ball bearing gear box use Mobile DTE Heavy Medium.
If your machine has pre-1947 roller bearing gear box use Mobile DTE Extra Heavy.
If your machine has post-1947 gear box use Mobile DTE Heavy medium.

I would guess that radial runout should be .0003 max when cold. The spindle nose is allowed to move .0003 to .0005 max, axially, when tapped on the nose spindle nose. The axial play in the spindle goes away once the cutter head warms up.

There is no known service manual beyond what exists in the VN12 manuals which everyone has. The information I have given you comes from other VN collectors who have scraps of letters and documentation from VN factory. You can email me at bebo.stiles at hotmail dot com with any questions you have. I've been assembling a VN12 technical data package over the past year.

Good luck and please do not scrap your machine haha

This is more than I usually try to attach to 1 email - looks like it will make it. If not, we'll try something different.

I understand many among us won't have anything to do with Facebook. For those that do visit Facebook, All the manuals we've been able to find are on the Van Norman Machinery Facebook page.

Thanks John, I searched these sources but had not asked any questions in those groups as of yet. I might end up asking some questions on there as well
