Unimat Hand Crank 19
Was a hand crank standard issue with the original Unimat??? If not, I will need to produce one for my Unimat. In the past I made one for my 7x16 mini lathe. -- http://www.homemadetools.net/forum/ OFF-SET-tailstock-center-65965#post105972 http://www.homemadetools.net/forum/s...995#post112113 SMALL TURRET TOOL POST PLANS http://www.homemadetools.net/forum/l...994#post112111 LARGE TURRET TOOL POST PLANS http://www.homemadetools.net/forum/m...383#post110340 MINI-LATHE CARRIAGE LOCK PLANS http://www.homemadetools.net/forum/s...191#post106483 SMALL QC TOOL POST PLANS http://www.homemadetools.net/forum/q...849#post119345 QUICK CHANGE LATHE TURRET http://www.homemadetools.net/forum/m...949#post119893 MINI LATHE COMPOUND PIVOT MODIFICATION

Small grooves - advice / suggestions please! 13
I need to make some fine grooves, in aluminium or stainless (304). I'm making a very simple lap steel guitar, and this is for the nut - the piece just below the tuners that the strings pass over, at the end of the fingerboard. The strings are the following thickness: inches mm 0.012 0.30 0.016 0.41 0.024 0.61 0.032 0.81 0.044 1.12 0.056 1.42 Ideally the string should sit in a semi-circular groove (the same size, halfway in) but I don't think this will be possible. A flat bottomed or 45 degree sided groove is more likely. Specialist luthiers nut files are too expensive for a one-off job. One suggestion I have seen is to grind down hacksaw blades on a bench grinder to the correct thickness. It would be good to use the Unimat though. An angled (chamfering) end mill might just do the larger sizes but I doubt the point is very fine on them to make the smallest grooves. I see that ball nose end mills go down to 1mm. You folks know a lot more about what's available and (more importantly) what is likely to work! - what would you suggest? I'm in the UK by the way. Many thanks!

Unimat 3 vs DB/SL Lathe 3-Jaw Chuck?
I have a 3-Jaw chuck that looks like those for the DB/SL with the three screws holding on the M12 threaded backplate, but the backplate is threaded M14 to fit the Unimat 3. Did Emco use the same 3-jaw chuck for both the DB/SL and Unimat 3 for a time? The 3-jaw chuck that is specific to the Unimat 3 (and diagramed in the owner manual) does not have a removeable backplate, so just wondering how I happened to have something different. Also, are there replacement jaws for these chucks as I have just sheared the teeth off one of the jaws in my chuck. Thank you, Timothy Jump

Spindle ram action 7
I'm working on a batch of hardware for the xacto-ish knives I make and I adjusted the geometry a little to be able to use the spindle ram axis to cut the 2mm x 18mm shoulders. This is working far better than I expected it to and the polished carbide insert tooling is giving me the best surfaces to date. So much faster than turning the little knobs! https://youtube.com/shorts/OO0_LObYHh8?si=Pf2FNGuVgdBQTJmD -- Kevin from PersonMakeObject

Yoctosun Magnifier for Wood Carving
I have been doing some miniature wood carvings today and my recently purchased YoctoSun Magnifier has turned out to be a great tool for me. It is easy to wear just like a pair of glasses and the magnifier can be flipped and out of the way with ease as required. DRO on Unimat 2
A while back I installed a Digital Readout on my Unimat linear Z travel. After some use I can report that it is extremely helpful to be able to set zero at any point along the travel. It makes it real handy to use. I have no plans to install a DRO on the cross slide even though it would be handy. Spare copy of Workholding in the Lathe, Workshop Practice Series #15 6
Was scanning some of my books into a cataloging app last night, and discovered I have two copies of this book in paperback. I'm in the USA, would prefer it go to a newish wannabe machinist. Anyone interested? I can cover postage to the USA. Book was published in the UK, and written the Kings English. It's meant for folks who have only a lathe. And to help them push the envelope a bit. My dad gave me my first Unimat about 50 years ago. It was given to him by an old guy. My dad considered it a toy. It had all the bells and whistles.
