V0.7b Available
I've just uploaded V0.7b - both a full version and an update that can be applied to V0.6b - to my web site. The urls are:- Full version http://www.peaksys.demon.co.uk/uiview/ui07bsfx.exe Update http://www.peaksys.demon.co.uk/uiview/upd07b.exe Please don't publicise these links outside this mailing list. Here's the relevant section of HISTORY.TXT:- V0.7b 1999-Apr-06 1. If you switched to another app when one of UI-Views set-up dialogues was open, then, when you switched back, the dialogue seemed to have disappeared. (In fact it hadn't, and you could use Alt+Tab to get back to it.) This strange behaviour is now fixed. 2. "Colours..." option added to the station right- click menu. This allows you to change the foreground and background colours of the station callsign labels. 3. "Add UI-View Tag" option added to the Station Setup and the Wx Station Setup dialogues. If this box is checked, then a tag like "{UIV07}" is appended to the station and/or wx beacons. This allows other UI-View systems to identify you as a Ui-View user. Stations transmitting the tag are marked with a '*' in the Stations List and their callsign labels on the maps use different colours to stations that aren't transmitting the tag. 4. Fixed a problem that stopped GPS data from some GPSs being displayed. 5. The longitude and latitude in the map INF files can now be input as either <longitude>,<latitude> or <latitude>,<longitude>. This makes it easier to copy the corner co-ordinates from the Attica CD maps. 6. The help updated to reflect the above changes. Also a comment added to the Station Setup section about sending beacons via digipeaters. 7. HISTORY.TXT option added to the Help menu. -- Roger Barker, G4IDE roger@... Beacon questions/KISS/AGW
Greetings. When a TNC (tiny2 firmware in STW board) is put into KISS mode does it stop sending it's beacons out? I'm pretty sure that it does, and with 0.7b that's a superb way of telling whether someone has UI-View running. I run AGWPE. My TNC beacon text is my location and is set to every half hour. When AGWPE kicks in and the beacons are effectively disabled, UI-View takes over sending them, and with the new tag that Roger has featured it's now easy for anyone else to spot whether UI- View is loaded or not. Well done again, Roger. Keith. G6NHU

Station tags
After a time all Station Tags disapear from the screen. Houses remain on screen and all other program functions are OK. Selecting a different map returns tags. I wonder if anyone has any clues ? I would like to thank Roger for this excellent piece of software, it's certainly livened packet up no end in Yorkshir!

UI-VIEW .....Unproto problem ? 4
Hi All, I have been running UI-VIEW for a few days, and all was OK, but I have now started to use the message & ping facility a lot more. However I have to report some strange effects. 1.When in QSO (Message) with a station via Ui-View my TNC UNPROTO gets reprogrammed with thier callsign ? If I reset it to CQ RELAY WIDE, after the first "ping" or "Message acknowlege" it changes again. I have viewed the TNC parameters with a terminal prog outside uiview and can confim that the change is for "real". 2.Also the station I am working will also then move location to be on top of my QTH ! I have seen this in both V06 & 07. My set-up is UIVIEW direct to TNC (Kantronics KPC2).The other station (M0AWB) is using TNC in Kiss mode,Sally and UIVIEW.I believe he uses BPQ, however I know that Tony is a member of this group, so may add his comments when he sees this posting. My Host mode in UIVIEW is set to none. I also tried DDE via WINPACK and still got the same effect. Help please ? Alan G8XLH

PC Advisor -Attica Map CDROM 2
Roger, tracker is now appearing on the map with ver 0.7. Anyone interested in adding their own maps to UI-View, in this months PC Advisor (MAY99) if you take out a years subscription to the mag. they are giving away a free gift and one of the choices is the Attica Ordnance Survey Interactive Atlas of Great Britain version 3. Anyone know if it has Ipswich Street Plan on it please? (I've got ver 2) Cheers Chris chris@...

V0.71b Available
I've just uploaded the V0.71b update to my web site. Please note that there is only an update, not a complete installation system. The update can be applied to V0.6b or V0.7b, it includes all the changes that were introduced in V0.7b. The url is:- http://www.peaksys.demon.co.uk/uiview/upd071b.exe Please don't publicise the link outside this mailing list. Here are the relevant sections of HISTORY.TXT:- V0.7b 1999-Apr-06 1. Also a comment added to the Station Setup section about sending beacons via digipeaters. 7. HISTORY.TXT option added to the Help menu. V0.71b 1999-Apr-09 1. Bug fixed in Ping, Query and Message functions when used from the Stations List on stations marked with a '*'. 2. Bug fixed with changing the label border colour. 3. There has been a problem reported about the selection tick not being shown on the "Announce Stations" sub-menu. I don't get the problem, but I've tried to fix it. Note that being able to turn off both options on the sub-menu is by design, it's not a bug. 4. Setting Expire time to '0' in Miscellaneous Setup now stops stations being expired. 5. "BEACON EVERY 0" added to INITNC.CMD. This means that, by default, the TNC's internal beacon is disabled if you use "host mode none". (If you really want to enable the internal beacon, then you must remove this line from INITNC.CMD.) 6. If a message line contained an IARU locator, it was regarded as a beacon, not as a message line. This could result in stations moving and changing their symbol to a grid square, even though they were sending long/lat in their beacon, if, for instance, they included their locator in their Station Information. -- Roger Barker, G4IDE roger@... GPS<>TNC Interfacing
(Whoops, sent this to the wrong group previously, sorry) Greetings. Not exactly related to the operation of UI-View, but I have a GPS-2plus in my car and a spare Tiny-2 Mk2 sitting in the shack. I'd like to get the two interfaced together and use them when mobile, but I don't have a manual for the Tiny-2 and have no idea how to configure it all up to work. Can anyone advise me (perhaps by e-mail so it doesn't clutter the list) of what I need to do to get this working. 73 de Keith. -- Keith Maton, G6NHU feek@... ICQ: 1776683 - Careful with that Axe

Ideas. 9
Hi All, One or two suggestions for the next release of ui-view, how about a 5th station symbol to denote bbs's? On a map that gets as crowded as mine can do on occasion it makes them a lot easier to pick out. The other thing that comes to mind at the moment, would it be possible to arrange for an expire time of zero to mean that stations will never be removed from the map? Congratulations on another excellent piece of software Roger, I'm still trying to work out what the bugs are that you spoke about in v0.7b, as far as I can tell it works 100%, in BPQ host mode at least! 73's de Mark M1DKS

BBS calls
Thanks for the update Roger, now displaying correctly on my packet machine in Win 3.11. I am still awaiting repair of the W95 packet machine ! I still have it running on 2 machines, under win 3.11 and W95, on both 2 and 70cms. There does appear to be a slight problem with the background colour of Ui stations and non-ui stations, they are both the same ! call Both the sysops of GB7MRU and GB7ADH have updated their beacon text, transmitted on 2 & 70 cms, to include the 'B' character instead of the '-' character as of Sunday 11th April. New Beacon is !5328.70N/00135.60WBGB7MRU Sheffield After much experimentation, we have been unable to include the BBS call instead of the Node call in the beacon, as it appears to affect the >mail and >NNA unproto beacons. Hope the inclusion of the 'B' character will help. More testing will take place, although the use of NODEcall may change in the future if the DCC removes the option of using the HOMEcall and insists in the use of the BBScall as the NODEcall. I am afraid that although I use BPQ myself, I am not an expert in its configuration...perhaps only G8BPQ was ! and the sysops concerned wish to retain their own call as the node call. Perhaps we have missed something somewhere ! The nodes GB7NC and GB7NS (and hopefully GB7AX soon) are also Tx'ing locator information on 2m and 70cms. Is there a suggestion that we should replace the '-' character with a 'B' character, or perhaps another character such as 'N' for Node? Thoughts please I can see Ui-View becoming a very useful tool for network management and wonder whether Roger has considered perhaps the use of 'layering' (for want of a word) so that the user could selectively show the stations on the map ? For instance user selectable display of something like :- 1) Ui-View Stations 2) Other non UI stations 3) Wx Stations 4) BBS Stations 5) Node Stations 6) All Stations etc (if more are needed !!!), switchable on and off as required. Sorry for giving you an instant headache Roger, I guess it may be a little tricky ! 73 John M0ADS Remote Sysop GB7MRU E-mail M0ADS@... M0ADS@... Packet M0ADS@GB7MRU.#19.GBR.EU

V0.7b problem 2
Hello Roger, I have discovered a small problem with the 0.7b update to UI-View. If stations which appear with the asterisk in the Station List window, are queried, pinged, or messaged, then the asterisk is transferred with the call-sign, to the callsign box of the query, ping, or message window. To overcome this error, it is necessary to edit out the asterisk to make the call-sign correct. This only occurs from the buttons in the Station List window, and not by right-clicking on the station displayed in the Map window. I do hope that is clear:-) My setup for this is WfWg3.11/UI-View/BPQ/NOD2BAY/Baycom modem. I have set this up purely to have a play with UI-View. Do you have any plans for adding support for Flexnet? Then I can use it with the normal station setup here? 73, Ray, G3NKL

Maps & Display also message window. 2
Hi all, here are my observations to date. Missing Features 1 ? Is there any facility to freeze the scroll bars, so that on PC shutdown, and restart, the map is in the same place, as was last left. If not, would other user like it, and could Roger provide it ? Missing Features 2 ? I have seen the request for zoom and have read Rogers reply, perhaps instead of zoom to remove the clutter of houses which have similar lat/long details, perhaps could there be the following :- A Right click command which may say "put to back" or "keep on top", like powerpoint and other drawing packages do ? or have the option of a one large house (Town house/flats Hi) with a list of calls attached to the same house ? I assume that there would have to be a user menu which would say "If the stations are with the area of xx size then show only one house". Finally wonder if anyone has noticed these effect ? Observation report 1...... When viewing a map, or looking at the station list, if an incomming mesage arrives, rather than jump to the message screen, it puts up a blue error message box, which contains the incomming message. There is an error number shown, but next time I will write it down (Sorry Roger) this has only happened twice during many hours of operation. Observation report 2...... I notice in 071b that the setting for colours, borders, and backround do not seem right, the border colour seem to be the background ? Regarding my previous message on Unproto being corrupted when in host mode set to "none" via a KPC2, I took Rodgers advice, and now run the TNC in kiss mode, and my problem has gone away. (It was leaving the TNC permantly programmed with the unproto being the callsign of the station you last worked even after UIview was closed down). Window sizes
Hi Roger, In a similar vein to Alans request about scroll bars on the maps retaining their previous settings, could the same be done for the terminal screen? I usually have it open at the bottom of the screen sized to a couple of lines, however if I have to close the program it defaults back to centre screen next time round. A minor quible in an otherwise excellent program Roger, thanks. 73 de John (G0FSM)

Binary Attachments!!
A couple of days ago, someone inadvertently sent the HAPPY99.EXE worm/virus to my WinPack mailing list. It caused several people a problem, and so I thought it was worthwhile sending the following to this list:- 1. This list is not moderated. I do not check any of the postings before you get them. 2. Please do not send binary attachments to the list. 3. If we all do '2', then, should any binary attachments be received, they can be treated with extreme suspicion! 4. If you receive a copy of HAPPY99.EXE from any source, even your best mate, DON'T RUN IT! The sender is completely unaware that he has sent it! -- Roger Barker, G4IDE roger@... The url is:- http://www.peaksys.demon.co.uk/uiview/upd073b.exe Please don't publicise the link outside this mailing list. Here are the relevant sections of HISTORY.TXT:- [There was a V0.72b, but it was only released to one person.] V0.73b 1999-Apr-14 1. Symbols added to SYMBOLS.TXT for BBS and node. 2. The [TRANSLATE] section added to SYMBOLS.TXT. This allows you to assign a symbol to a particular callsign type, irrespective of what symbol character the stations transmit. For example, all GB7??? stations can be made to display as BBSs, even if they are only transmitting locator beacons. There is more information about this in the comments in SYMBOLS.TXT and in the "UI-View Symbols" section of the help. 3. The Ping report window now autosizes, previously it was too small for some callsigns. 4. File menu added, with Print options. 5. Exit menu option moved to the File menu. 6. Font option added to the station right-click menu. 7. Bug fixed with changing the label background colour. 8. The scroll position of the map is saved between program sessions. 9. The size and position of the Terminal window is saved between program sessions. 10. Help updated to reflect the above changes. -- Roger Barker, G4IDE roger@... UI-View monitoring. 2
Hello Roger, I don't know whether the following problem is unavoidable, or whether I am doing something which is not intended. Firstly, with a 486DX2/66, 12 Meg, W95, UI-View 071b (yes, I do now have the later upgrade!) BPQ, NODE2BAY and Baycom modem, I can successfully run UI-View on its own, without Winpack. I presume that is intended. If I start Winpack, all is fine. If I then close down Winpack, the UI-View monitoring ceases. Monitoring can be re-started by either re-loading Winpack or shutting down and re-loading UI-View. Secondly, I have my normal packet machine, a P133, 48 Meg, W95 and the dreaded Flexnet. UI-View is in DDE mode of course, and so Winpack is loaded for UI-View to run. If I unload Winpack, and then re-load it, then UI-View does not recommence monitoring. 73, Ray, G3NKL

Ui-View Updates.. 6
Hello all, Many thanks for the latest update of UI-View Roger...It`s proving extremely popular around the West Yorkshire area with many stations using the software or modifying their beacons to contain their locations.. Just a quick question to you Roger, Is it possible to keep a list of RX`ed stations so that when a newer release of your software is installed the stations received earlier can be re-called...I had a nice map going till I installed the 0.73b release and no matter which files I choose not to overwrite, I can`t get the original stations back.. Dunno if the above makes much sense :-) 73 all de Mark (M1AJG)
