APRS-over-VARA crosses the Atlantic on 30 meters! 3
Chris Moulding G4HYG (of Cross-Country Wireless and APRS Messenger fame) and I have been experimenting with APRS-over-VARA on 30 meters for some time now. This morning (28 Nov 2024 -Thanksgiving Day in the US), I awoke to this mapping display on one of my APRS computer displays. This was received on my Kenwood TS-690 and a G5RV-type dipole sloping toward the UK and Europe. Radio is connected to an Acer "netbook" 11.8" mini-laptop running UIview. The Space Station has nothing to do with the contact - it's just tracked on the same display in real time, and happened to "photo-bomb" the screen cap. This was screen-capped at 10:00 AM US Eastern Time (1500 UTC 28 November). Note that the transmission was actually heard about an hour and a half earlier. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H. Cross-County Road Trip Again Shows Overwhelming Superiority of VARA for HF APRS!
In October 2024, I made a major road trip from my home QTH in central Michigan to Los Angeles and back. On this trip, I made the most extensive test yet comparing the performance of classic 300-baud HF AX.25 packet vs the VARA high-performance software modem for 30-meters HF APRS. I beaconed every 10 minutes, alternately on classic packet and on VARA, on the 30M APRS channel during the entire 6125 miles (9850 Km) of the roundtrip. My home station in Haslett (near East Lansing) Michigan received and igated both modes. In addition, several other stations around the US also served as igates for the VARA mode. The trip again confirmed again the overwhelming superiority of VARA, with it's built-in multiple levels of forward error correction, over classic HF packet. There were many days on the trip where I heard NOTHING in the car on classic packet APRS (lots of solar storms & disturbances), but copied multiple stations (including my own home station) on VARA. Full details on the trip, the setup and the results here on my website: <http://WA8LMF.net/RoadTrip/> and click on the link for RoadTrip-Oct-2024/index.htm <http://wa8lmf.net/RoadTrip/RoadTrip-Oct-2024/index.htm> P.S My proselytizing for APRS-over-VARA seems to be catching on -- I am now seeing igates on both coasts and the midwest beaconing regularly on the APRS-over-VARA mode on 30M since the trip! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H. VARA Continues To Show It's Overwhelming Superiority Over AX.25 Packet
[ 11:00 PM EDT 6 Oct / 0300 UTC 7 Oct] I am currently observing a dramatic demonstration of how overwhelmingly superior VARA is compared to classic AX.25 HF packet. At this time, there is a nearly total HF blackout on 30M due to the massive solar CME (coronal mass ejection) Currently, my APRS mapping webserver for 30M meters 300-baud HF packet APRS is showing no stations at all. (Normally at this time of the evening there would be half a dozen or so stations around the country showing on my map. Receive via UZ7HO Soundmodem software TNC. ) Meanwhile, beacons from WA7GMX-8 in Washington state and WB8SKP-9 in western Kentucky are continuing to be received on 30M APRS-over-VARA, here at my QTH near East Lansing, Michigan. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H. Another Road Trip Testing APRS-over-VARA Coming
Over the period 8 October 2024 to 26 October 2024, I will be on another extensive road trip, running HF APRS both over classic AX.25 packet, and over VARA. A friend of mine is flying from Los Angeles to Chicago on the 8th. I will then take her for a fall color tour of northern Michigan, before driving her back to Los Angeles. This will be a long looping itinerary west from Michigan on I-80 to the Mississippi River, then south following the Great River Road (the secondary roads along the banks of the Mississippi) to New Orleans. Then west across Texas to northern New Mexico, southern Colorado and Arizona back to Calfornia. For anyone wanting to log four states in one transmission, I will be stopping at the "4-Corners" point on the Navajo Nation where Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona meet at one point. I will be operating HF exclusively on 30 meters this time (no 60 meters tests). As in the past I will use multiple SSIDs: - WA8LMF (no SSID) is 2M VHF 144.39 and direct-to-Internet cellular data. - WA8LMF-2 is 30M HF conventional 300-baud AX.25 packet APRS - WA8LMF-3 is 30M HF APRS-over-VARA Because these are full desktop-type APRS installations (3 instances of UIview) running on my newly-commisioned Panasonic CF-53 "Toughbook" mobile laptop in the car, I can receive APRS messages on any of the three modes. As before, the mobile rig is a Yaesu FT-891 running into a 30 -meter Quicksilver Radio "QuickStick" hamstick-type mono-band whip. My personal APRS igate/mapping-webservers will be following my trip at: <http://WA8LMF.net/map> (These displays only show what my home station in central Michigan (East Lansing area) is hearing OFF-THE-AIR -- not from the Internet.) Additionally, my new "RoadTrip Tracker" page at <http://WA8LMF.net/RoadTrip> will provide a series of fixed-scale shaded-relief maps of the trip. The road trip tracker uses a combination of off-the-air reception and the APRS Internet feed. 30 meters normally has a skip zone of 250-300 miles; I.e. my home station in Michigan could never hear anything CLOSER than about Chicago, Cincinnati or Toronto, Ontario. Travels anywhere inside Michigan were never heard by my 30M igates when I was the ONLY APRS-over-VARA igate on the air. Now that WA7GMX in the state of Washington, and WB8SKP in western Kentucky now appear to be running full-time APRS-over-VARA igates on 30 meters as well, the HF coverage should be much more consistent everywhere, even inside Michigan, then in the past. My trip up north in Michigan should be heard and igated by one or both of these other stations. (Assuming another solar explosion/geomagnetic storm doesn't wipe out HF entirely!) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H. Yet Another APRS-over-VARA Road Trip Coming
On Wednesday 24 July, I will be departing for the annual Evergreen, Colorado Jazz Festival <http://EvergreenJazz.org> happening this coming weekend. Once again, I will be beaconing APRS alternately on classic 300-baud AX.25 packet and on VARA. This will again provide a direct side-by-side comparison of the two modes. On Wednesday 24 July, I will depart my QTH in central Michigan (Haslett) and wll be stopping in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the first night. On Thursday 25 July, I will be stopping at the Nebraska/Colorado state line where Interstate 76 branches off from I-80. On Friday morning, I complete the last 4 hours of the drive to Denver, and then up the mountains to Evergreen. The return trip will be Monday 29 July and Tuesday 30 July. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The radio setup is the same as previous events: Three copies of UIview (2M VHF, 30M AX.25 and 30M VARA) running on my Panasonic Toughbook mobile laptop. Radio is Yaesu FT-891 running into a 30M Quicksilver Radio "QuickStick" ham-stick type whip ball-mounted on the left-rear corner of the car. (This time, I will NOT be towing "Studio B", my radio trailer.) The festival itself starts Friday afternoon around 3 PM MDT, and goes all day Saturday and Sunday before ending around 6:00 PM local Sunday. In addition to my own position, I will be beaconing an APRS object for the festival on HF. (At the main venue, I have access to AC power so I can leave the radios and computers running in the car during the event.) My APRS UI-webservers will be running, showing what I can receive at home in Michigan during the trip. Go to: <http://WA8LMF.net/map> to select the main 30M AX.25 packet APRS page, the 30M VARA APRS page, and the Special Events page. In addition, the Road Trip Tracker page will be live. The two 30M pages only reflect what my home station is hearing OFF THE AIR - there is no Internet feed. The Special Events and Road Trip Tracker pages combine off-the-air AND the APRS-IS Internet feed. AS usual, WA8LMF (no SSID) is 2M FM, WA8LMF-2 is AX.25 HF, WA8LMF-3 is VARA HF. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H. More APRS-over-VARA Testing on Cross-Country Road Trip Next Week 5
On Sunday 16 June 2024, I will be departing from entral Michigan on a cross-country road trip to Los Angeles. I will have "Studio B" (my mobile hamshack and radio operations trailer) in tow. Once again, I will be doing side-by-side comparisons of classic HF AX.25 packet APRS and APRS-over-VARA-HF. I will alternate beacons on AX.25 and VARA, each mode on a 10-minute cycle while enroute. Both modes are originated from the same computer, interface, radio (Yaesu FT-891) and antennas (Quicksilver Radio ham sticks for 60 and 30m) in the car. Note that because this is being run as a full laptop-based APRS setup (not a dumb transmit-only tracker), I should be able to receive/send APRS messages on any of the three modes (VHF, HF packet, HF VARA). Three instances of UIview will be running side-by-side from separate folders to generate the three modes. For the first day out (Sunday 0-500 miles / 800 km), I will be operating on 60 meters "Channel 5" (5.403.5 USB). Plans are for the first overnight in Des Moines IA. For the rest of the trip (too far away from my home igate/webserver for 60M), I will be on the usual 30 meters APRS frequency -- 10.147.600 USB with standard 1600/1800 Hz "KAM" tones on 300-baud AX.25 and standard VARA-HF tones. I will be using WA8LMF (no SSID) for 2M and direct-to-Internet beaconing via cellular, WA8LMF-2 for the HF AX.25 mode, and WA8LMF-3 for the HF VARA beacons. Thus you can distinguish the posits from the three modes on sites like findu.FI or my own personal APRS webservers at <http://WA8LMF.net/map> I also have a dedicated Road Trip Tracker up at my web site: <http://WA8LMF.net/RoadTrip> This tracker plots all three modes with their three different SSIDs. It plots only what is heard off-the-air on HF RF, as heard from my home QTH (no Internet).near East Lansing MI. (The two-meter WA8LMF [no SSID] is plotted from both off-the-air and the APRS-IS Internet feed.) The road trip tracker plots posits on 3D-looking relief maps, so once I get to Denver and the beginning of the "real west" (the Rocky Mountains), the map display should be quite interesting. The outbound trip will be on I-80 across Iowa and Nebraska, I-70 across Colorado and Utah, and I-15 Utah to L.A. The return trip about a week later will be along the lay of the old Route 66 (I-40 Barstow, CA - Arizona - New Mexico onward to the eastern US. As an added "side-show" to this trip, I will be running my "Mobile SSTV LiveCAM" from a second HF rig in the car on 15 or 10 meters if the higher HF bands are open. I have a web cam pointed out the front window that automatically grabs and beacons a live SSTV image every ten minutes. This gets especially interesting when I get west of Denver into the Colorado Rockies and the Utah red rocks desert. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H. POS files not displaying
I have 2 laptops running UI-View32, one is a Dell Inspiron W10 and the other is a Dell Duo tablet W7. I built a POS file for a bike event this weekend. This & other POS files load & display correctly on the Dell Inspiron, but none display on the Duo (I routinely run UI-View32 APRS mobile on this tablet, so in general it works very well). UI-View shows that they are loaded. UI-View32 & PMapServer 9 versions are the same. I had a missing DLL file, which errored when opening the POS in WordPad only. Reloaded & this error has cleared. Any suggestions on what might be the cause/resolution? Prefer not reload everything... Thanks, Joe KC0NOX

Installing UI-View 32 on Windows 10 15
I'm trying to do a fresh install of UI-View32 on Windows 10 and all goes well until I try to configure it. As you may remember, UI-View is designed to open a .hlp file the first time you try to configure many settings, but Windows 10 can' t read UI-View's .hlp files. So it sends me to a Microsoft page that has no solution (it has .hlp readers for installation on Win 8.1 and earlier but not one for Windows 10.) And I really need to use the UI-View help files to configure it. Does anyone have a solution? For example, is there a way to fool Windows 10 into opening an older .hlp reader. Or should I start looking at utilities that convert .hlp files to .html? (This solution would not appear to fix the problem of UI-View being able to open it's own .hlp files -- but at least I could get at the info in the .hlp files.) Ralph NM5RM Santa Fe NM

UI-View Maps for the UK 3
Hi all, I've recently returned to APRS after a break of a number of years. I've got UI-View32 working with my Icom IC-9700 and it is transmitting and I'm hearing a couple of stations. One a mobilte and the other a digipeater, MB7UWR, but I can't find maps to instal to UI-View32 other than the default ones. Can someone point me towards a database of UK maps, or let me know of a way to create my own please? I remember that, years ago, I made up my own map set using maps on a DVD, but I guess that's be superceded by now? Thanks - Dave (G0DJA)

Solar Eclipse and Yet Another APRS HF Road Test Coming! 2
The next road trip and APRS AX.25-vs-VARA test opportunity will be on April 8th. I am driving down to north-west Ohio for the total solar eclipse. I will be parked just off Ohio I-75 near Celina Ohio, right on the center of the line of totality. Coords are 40.4964N / 84.1926W. I will be taking the radio trailer "Studio B" <http://WA8LMF.net/Aliner> , and will be experimenting with HF propagation changes during the eclipse. I will be beaconing AX.25 and VARA APRS on both 30 and 60 meters, and monitoring signal levels on the AM broadcast band. Possibly some SSTV livecam shots of the eclipse, if the upper HF bands (15 and 10 meters) are open -- 20 meters is just too much of a mess on SSTV. I intend to arrive on site about 12:00 Noon local (US EST / UTC -4) for setup. At this location, the eclipse starts at about 13:54 EST and will be total by 15:09 EST. Green diagonal line is the track of the eclipse. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H. Another HF VARA vs AX.25 APRS Road Test Coming 10 Feb 2024
I will be conducting another comparison of VARA vs AX.25 for APRS on 60 meters on Saturday 10 Feb 2024. This will be on the drive up to Traverse City and back, for the Traverse City "Cherryland ARC" Swap-N-Shop event. As in previous tests, I will be transmitting APRS position reports alternately with classic 300 baud HF AX.25 packet and with VARA-HF. Two copies of the UIview APRS program will be running, one for each mode, into the same soundcard, interface, Yaesu FT-891 transceiver, and same Quicksilver Radio 60-meter Hamstick-type mobile whip. The trip up will be at night - I have to depart Haslett, Michigan at about 3:30 AM to arrive at the event in Traverse City by 7:00 AM to setup. The return trip will start in the early afternoon. The propagation characteristics of 60 meters are sharply different night and day. Nighttime tends toward long-haul (300-600 miles/ 480-1000 km) propagation, while daytime favors short-haul NVIS coverage (0-250 miles / 0-400 km) or so. My home station, which is now running dual AX.25 and VARA mode igates 24/7 on both 30 and 60 meters will be receiving these tests and passing anything heard to the APRS Internet system. To distinguish the AX.25 reports from the VARA reports, the AX.25 transmissions will use WA8LMF-2, while the VARA beacons will use WA8LMF-3. I.e: <http://APRS.fi/WA8LMF-2> will show what is heard on AX.25 packet <http://APRS.fi/WA8LMF-3> will show what is heard on VARA Both modes will be sending APRS compressed-format posits. My own APRS real-time tracking maps, generated by my own UI-Webservers, are visible at: <htttp://WA8LMF.net/map> If anyone actually wants to get up at the ungodly hour of 3:30 AM (local US EST) to monitor, or even try to send a beacon or APRS message to my mobile enroute, so much the better! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H. Beacons not decoded
Hi everyone, this is my first post here. I am currently using UI-View32 + Windows XP + Nvidia Soundcard + home made audio interface (with 2 audio transformers and an optocoupler) + AGWPE software + ADI VHF base transceiver at low power + home made power supply + RG213 coax + slim jim antenna. When I send a beacon (by pressing F9) I can see the VHF transceiver going into TX (as there are visual indicators on the rig), audio from UI-VIEW32 is transmitted as it is received 5 kilometers away by another guy (Ricky), however there is some problem and I bet it is that the PTT disconnects before the audio finishes and something else. I can see at 02:04 in this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CabziTnxs7o) this ham's audio that looks like FM, mine looks more like some bad AM (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rhK0hVahW4F99qXQnhS8RtHqypwF7_D0/view?usp=drive_link). The result is that on Ricky's place his UI-VIEW32 does not decode any of this beacons. Furthermore I've tried to decode the beacons using another computer (also with Windows XP) and I had the same result (but as it was on the same location of the TX I though that can be a problem). After all that I installed the software in yet another computer (this one running Windows 7) to be the TX station and nothing changed or improved (but I cannot deduct the PC is not the problem as maybe I am doing some insufficient configuration of UI-View32 and/or AGWPE). Many thanks 73's Marcelo LW3EOV M6BGG

New VARA HF Modem Works With UIview - Huge Improvement Over AX.25 Packet 7
[This is an account of making the high-performance VARA HF data modem work with UIview, as an alternative to classic 300-baud AX.25 packet on HF.] After spending nearly the entire New Year's 3-day weekend twiddling TCP/IP settijngs, serial port emulators, sound card drivers, etc, I now have the VARA high-performance HF soft-modem working with the UIview program to transmit far more robust HF APRS than classic AX.25 packet. I am using a stack of components from "VSPE" (Virtual Serial Ports Emulator) to create a serial-to-TCPIP bridge to connect the serial-only KISS output of UIview to the network (TCP/IP) KISS connection provided in the VARA soft-modem. For nearly 40 years, HF APRS has used classic 300-baud 200-Hz-shift HF packet (mostly on 30 meters) as it's transport layer. However, packet is a /horrible/ mode on HF with poor immunity to noise and HF selective fading. I've been using the "UZ7HO Soundmodem" soundcard "soft TNC" (arguably the best HF packet TNC - hardware or software) for this purpose. However, it still falls far short of modes like MFSK16 or PSK63 for weak-signal-plagued-with-multipath data operation. For about two years, I have been experimenting with using FLdigi as a KISS modem for HF APRS on both 30 and 60 meters. 60 meters tends to be a noisy band, putting a premium on data modes that can perform error-free at low signal-to-noise ratios. My web site about this is here: <http://WA8LMF.net/FLdigiAPRS> Over the weekend of the 6th and 7th of January , I conducted a road test comparing the performance of APRS over traditional HF 300-baud AX.25 packet vs APRS using the VARA modem on 60 meters. This was a 500-mile / 800 Km round-trip from central Michigan (East Lansing area) to west suburban Chicago and back. VARA was overwhelmingly superior - by least an order of magnitude! The full details, including a brief background on VARA, are on a new page on my web site at: <http://WA8LMF.net/APRS_VARA> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H.
