it may be there are not many base stations near you. Leave your station operating continuously for several days, then examine the station list in UI-View and see what stations and icons you are actually receiving. You can sort the station list by distance. If you see stations 50 or 60 miles away you are probably getting most local traffic. My list did show one station from 107 miles. Recognize some of the stations are being digipeated to reach you. Mike KB7WUK Portland OR On 12/26/2023 11:16, kerry wrote:

Another 60M APRS Road Test Tomorrow
[Friday 15 Dec 2023?? 15:15 local (US Eastern time / 2000 UTC ]
Tomorrow (Saturday? 16 Dec 2023) I will be conducting another 60 meters road test of APRS over classic AX.25 HF packet *vs*? APRS over the VARA high-performance HF modem.? This is another trip from Lansing, MI to Traverse City, MI - about 200 miles/360 km each way. I will be beaconing alternately as WA8LMF-2 on classic packet APRS,? and as WA8LMF-1 on VARA.? Radio setup is the usual - Yaesu FT-891 running into an MFJ 60-meter hamstick mobile antenna on 60M "Channel 5" 5.403.5 MHz USB.? Peak power output will be about 50 watts in both modes. ? Receive/igatre setup at home is another FT-891 and a mini-dipole made of two 60M mobile hamsticks mounted horizontally about 12 feet / 2.9 meters above the ground to maximize NVIS receive. I expect to depart around 09:30 local (US Eastern time) / 14:30 UTC.? The drive takes about 4 1/2 hours so the trip up will be entirely during daylight optimum NVIS propagation hours.? The return trip will start in the late afternoon, during the period of twilight-to-long-range-nighttime? propagation.? Depart / return times subject to change! Hopefully, my presence will show on my own 60M UIview UI-Webserver maps.? Go to <> for the links to the various UIview mapping web servers on 60M. NOTE: I am not using the "FLdigi modes" MFSK16 & PSK31 on this test. If I do get received at home, the posits will be igated to the APRS Internet System (APRS-IS) and viewable on APRS.fi. <>????? APRS Igates Over VARA Mode Now Operating on 30 & 60 Meters
[This is the workable successor to G4HYG's PSK63/MFSK16-based "APRS Messenger" for weak-signal HF APRS!]
*The world's first Tri-Mode APRS igates are now "open for business" 24/7 on both 30 and 60 meters.... * The WA8LMF UI-Webservers now receive and igate APRS over classic 300-baud AX.25HF packet,? APRS over MFSK16 & PSK31,? and *now APRS over VARA* on both 30 meters and 60 meters from my home station located in central Michigan. VARA is one of the newest sound-card "digi-modes".? Written by Jose Ros EA5HVK, It can receive and decode error-free data transmissions at signal levels and S/Ns that literally can not be heard in the radio speaker.?? With stronger signals, it can exceed the net data rate of VHF/FM 1200-baud packet in a 500 Hz CW bandwidth on HF !? VARA is adaptive, adjusting it's transmit speed up and down based on error rate and S/N., switching from simple to more complex multi-tone QPSK wave forms, based on error rate and the bandwidth of the radio. In a 2300 Hz SSB bandwidth, it can exceed the throughput of 9600-baud VHF/UHF packet on HF!? It is already starting to replace the pricey (USD $600) SCS Pactor4 modems on Winlink HF radio email systems, purely in software with a standard soundcard interface.? The basic version, usable on the low data rates of APRS, is free.? A USD $70 registration unlocks the higher-speed modes. Currently, the other widely-used activity, layered on top of the VARA "softmodem" is "VarAC Chat",? a live keyboard-to-keyboard chat application that can also do file transfers and "igate" received beacons to the PSK Reporter network. Running on top of VARA, it can equal the weak-signal performance of FT-8, but with free-form conversations instead of the? hello--sig report--goodbye canned exchanges of FT-8. VARA presents a KISS-over-IP interface to external programs. In principle, any application that can run over classic packet TNCs (messaging systems, BBS systems, APRS, etc) can run over a VARA link instead,? with an ENORMOUS increase (15-20 dB advantage) in weak-signal capabilities.? I have been testing APRS-over-VARA for over a year now. Some of my findings early this year are summarized on my web site at: <> This was a competitive "shoot out" between classic 300-baud HF packet and VARA on 60 meters, on a 500-mile road trip. At least three APRS client applications (PinPoint, APRSis-32 and YAAC) can link directly to a KISS-over-IP interface.? For older APRS clients, like *UIview*, that can only do KISS over a serial port, the third-party "Swiss-Army-Knife" of com port utilities "VSPE" can quickly and easily create an? IP<-->Serial-Com-Port? bridge. Full details on setting up VARA for use with APRS applications is here on my web site: <> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen H. What is APBM1S and what us ID? I don't know? I have a few other stations but they all run with different SSIDs. I only have one station running as WB4BSD. My current aprs server is noam.aprs2.net:14580. It won't stay connected and I don't see the influx of stations like I use to. I have no extra log-on text. Now when I connect, I get nothing.First, it looks like you have gone into the “Station Setup” and changed the Unproto Address from APRS to WIDE1-1. That should be corrected. By the way, if your intention was to actually use a path of WIDE1-1, I would not recommend it. Fixed stations and especially digipeaters and iGates shouldn’t be asking fill-in digipeaters for assistance. I would suggest a one hop path of WIDE2-1, or a two hop WIDE2-2 if you really need it. Do you have more than one station running under WB4BSD? What is APBM1S and what us ID? It will be less confusing for others if you use a different SSID for other APRS stations under your call sign. So, back to your question. You don’t appear to be connected to a server right now. When you do connect, what server (and port) are you using, and what do you have entered in the “extra logon text” in the APRS Server Setup? If you do t have a need to connect to a specific server, noam.aprs2.net:14580 would be a good choice. -- 73 Keith VE7GDH “I may be lost, but I know exactly where I am!” -- 73 Keith VE7GDH "I may be lost, but I know exactly where I am!" |
APRS Server Question
I've been running UI-View32 for several years now and across a couple different computers. I'm fairly happy with it.
I've noticed something though. Years ago, when I would connect to the APRS Server I would instantly receive tons of stations popping up from all over the world and messages would flood in.? Now when I connect, I get nothing. What happened? Is it me or did something change that I missed. Thanks all! -- Rusty WB4BSD |
Updated UIview Virtual Machine Package Now On My Website
For some years now, I have had a ready-to-run UIview setup packaged as a VMware virtual machine on my website, for download.? This bundle included UIview, installed and ready to run, with all it's plug-ins including Precision Mapping 9.0, along with an installer for the freeware VMware Player required to run the VM.
I have just updated the bundle with extensive revisions to the install notes and a much more recent version of the VMware Player. I have tested and verified that the VM now runs on Windows 11, as well as Win XP, 7, 8.x and 10.? I now have the VM and VMware running successfully under "Windows Tiny 11" on? my el-cheapo USD $129 Walmart Lenovo 14" laptop with only 4 GB RAM. ("Tiny 11" is an unofficial distribution of Windows 11 that results in an installed footprint less than 1/3rd (!) that of the? normal Win11 -- 7 GB compared to 22 GB+ for standard 11.? This is achieved by stripping out a lot of the MS bloat including smart-phone-app wanna-be MS Store app cruft, games, hooks for popup advertising & user tracking, and the sprawling invasive Edge browser. ? It will run on a lot of hardware that Microsoft claims can't run Win 11, including those lacking the "trusted computing platform" module and oceans of RAM.) The freeware VMware Player application is also available for MacOS and Linux, though not included in my bundle.? This means UIview can be run on Macs and Linux devices, including potentially the higher-powered versions of the Raspberry Pi.
