That's the problem, Bob. Running network mode requires AGWPE as the host.

Hi Bob

You don't need to run the MAIN TCPIP facility in AGW (the one you have to
pay for!)

Set that back to TCPIP no thanks and just right click on the
AGWPE item on
the task bar and tick the bit that says Winsock Interface thats the only
thing you have to do to get TCPIP working for UI-View

Then go into setup -> comms setup on the remote PC and set host to agw ->
click setup select TCP/IP enter the address of the packet
machine. click OK

Reading the follow-ups to this message, two things are being
confused:-

1. The ability to run UI-View on one PC, and AGWPE on another.

2. What Bob is actually asking - he wants to use one UI-View
system as a
server for another system. That's not the same as '1', and whether or
not you are using AGWPE is irrelevant.

Both are new features in V2.16b, and I thought there might be some
confusion!

'1' works *exactly* like using UI-View with AGWPE has always
worked, the
only difference is that AGWPE and the TNCS/modems/radios can be on one
PC, and UI-View can be on another. (Note - AGWPE only needs
to be on one
PC, not on both.)

'2' allows UI-View to work as a server for other systems, rather like
APRServe works. Once the local server is enabled, other systems can
connect to it just as if they were connecting to APRServe.

First you need to decide which you want to do. (You can, of course, do
both.) Then you really need to read the "AGWPE Setup" section of the
help for '1', or the "APRS Server Setup" and "Local Server"
sections of
the help for '2'.

For either '1' or '2', you need to have TCP/IP installed on
all the PCs
you are using. If you are linking via your LAN, TCP/IP must
be attached
to the ethernet adaptor, and you must have assigned IP
addresses to both
PCs. That is nothing to do with UI-View, it's basic TCP/IP
set-up stuff,
but I know it can be confusing! Because the TDP/IP support in UI-View
will always do a DNS look-up before it establishes a connection, you
really need to create HOSTS files containing the local machine domain
names and addresses.

I know the above is nothing like a blow by blow "how to do
it" account,
but hopefully the details can be filled in as more specific questions
are asked.

Host mode NONE - there's a single line at the bottom of the Terminal
window for keying in. Host mode anything else - that line isn't there.
If you change mode, you may need to resize the Terminal window to get
the line to appear/disappear - the slightest resizing movement will do
it.

To reply to two messages at the same time - My main point in suggesting
how to fix the KISS problem was because, as UI-View develops, the use of
terminal mode becomes less desirable.

One of the most technically restrictive features of APRS is the fact
that most of the software works with TNCs in terminal mode. That has
resulted, for instance, in proper use not being made of the frame
destination address, because to change the destination address in
terminal mode means changing the TNC's UNPROTO setting - very clunky to
do dynamically. So the main use of the destination address in APRS is to
advertise the software product in use (although the APRS authors will
tell you that it's for debugging purposes... ;-)

As soon as you start using KISS, or a host mode, problems of this sort
completely go away. It also becomes possible to implement very
intelligent digipeaters in software.

the first machine is a pent 133used for inet the second is a pent 300 which i use for packet
the 3rd machine is a p3-500 which is the wifes machine (not used for packet or ui-view)
the 4th is a p233 laptop whice is used for uiview
i have up to press had no problems getting all the machines to talk with each other using the LAN transfering files etc
but i am sure were i am falling over is the tcp-ip bit which i dont fully understand

so can someone give my advice on what needs to be done please !!!!!

Network ping thing

Keith Maton

Greetings to everyone, specifically those who are network interested!

Rightyho, everything is now almost 100%, except for one thing.

Main PC configured as G6NHU, running AGWPE and UI-View
Remote PC configured as G6NHU-1 running just UI-View

If I ping from G6NHU to G6NHU-1 via G0TRT (or any station, doesn't matter
who) it works perfectly, but going the other way, ie pinging from G6NHU-1 to
G6NHU it doesn't work.

To quantify. I see the ping on G6NHU, and it replies, but it leaves out
G0TRT and tries to reply directly. G6NHU-1 doesn't see this and pings
again, eventually timing out.

The ping request is:
13:46:49T G6NHU-1>G6NHU,G0TRT Port=2 <UI C Len=5>:
~~00

The answer is:
13:46:57T G6NHU>G6NHU-1 Port=2 <UI C Len=3>:
~00

KPC3+ and KISS problem

Ev Tupis (W2EV)

Hi Roger,

My remark about my KPC3+ not "liking" KISS mode was really just made in
passing. I believe that there is something wrong with my TNC. It
operates fine for about 10-minutes. Then, I noticed that UI-View's
screen cleared and all the icons redrew themselves each time a new icon
appeared on the screen. Within moments, I'd get the "overflow error"
and everything would lockup. Last night, I traced it all to the fact
that the KPC3+ would put itself into some mode of "resending" all of
its' information to the TNC, as I watched it happen on HyperTerminal.
It was a strange thing to witness. :o)

So...I performed a hard reset (using the internal jumber) and decided to
play with UI-View in the same mode as I do WinAPRS. . . in "RX-only"
mode, and manually configuring the TNC for PropNET operation (a
developing service in the USA, very similar to the UK's, except we have
abandoned lat/lon in favor of gridsq for location info...for the sake of
shortest possble TX).

I'll revisit using it in KISS mode a little later. This is just a note
to share an experience, not really looking for help resolving KISS, yet.

A little off the topic -- it's unwise to just make up an IP address like
90.0.0.1. If are some blocks reserved for unregistered networks -- they
are 10.* (so you can use 10.0.0.1, etc, even 10.255.255.1), and
192.168.*. (There may be a third but I don't remember the details.)

<propnet@...> writes
From: "Ev Tupis (W2EV)" <propnet@...>

I'm using ui-view in "none" mode to experiment a bit (my kpc3 seems to
have some problem w/KISS mode -- the reason for an "overflow error" I
experienced earlier). It seems that things display fine (RX) in a
scrolling window, but keyboard input is neither displayed nor received
by the tnc.
The KPC-3 should work fine in KISS mode. You need to select "Host mode
KISS" in "Comms Setup", and configure KISS by clicking the Setup button,
and then clicking the "Easy Setup" Ka button. UI-View puts the TNC into
KISS mode and takes it out again when you close the program, you don't
need to do it yourself. I've got a KPC-3 and I always use it in KISS
mode. The only problem I can think of is that, if your KPC-3 is a '+',
perhaps the command to put it into KISS mode has changed? UI-View sends
a return to clear the TNC input buffer, then sends "INT KISS" and
"RESET". That's correct for every Ka TNC I've used, but you can change
it in the KISS Setup if the commands for the KPC-3+ are different.

I'm a bit confused as the "help file" says I should see only a single
line (I'm seeing a scrolling window) and it says I should be able to
send manual configuration parameters to the TNC, which I can't. Have I
somehow possibly gotten myself into a "hybrid mode" of some sorts?
If you don't want to use KISS mode, you must set "Host mode NONE" to use
the TNC in terminal mode. If you do that, then UI-View will send the
commands in INITNC.CMD to the TNC when you start it up. There should be
no need to input commands from the Terminal window. If you really want
to do that, then, when you open the Terminal window, there's a single
line at the bottom where you can key in the commands.

(KISS, AGW and BPQ modes all work much better than terminal mode, purely
because terminal mode is so restrictive on what you can do with the
TNC.)

Terminal Window

I'm using ui-view in "none" mode to experiment a bit (my kpc3 seems to
have some problem w/KISS mode -- the reason for an "overflow error" I
experienced earlier). It seems that things display fine (RX) in a
scrolling window, but keyboard input is neither displayed nor received
by the tnc.

I'm a bit confused as the "help file" says I should see only a single
line (I'm seeing a scrolling window) and it says I should be able to
send manual configuration parameters to the TNC, which I can't. Have I
somehow possibly gotten myself into a "hybrid mode" of some sorts?

Ev...Go to
and "files" will be in the left-hand frame, about halfway down the page.

Hi Andy,
I've been looking for "the onelist files area", but can't seem to locate it. I
am a onelist subscriber. Would you be kind enough to point me in the right
direction, please?
