Yes, that's a good idea. I have been thinking about formalise something
like that. My idea is to add to the Station Setup an option for the
program to automatically add something like {UIV06} to the end of the
BTEXT. That will identify UI-View users, show the program version, be
easy to check for automatically, and shouldn't give APRS users a
problem. It would allow UI-View users to be automatically identified on
the maps - say with a different colour callsign label - and in the
Station List.

I wonder what people think about that?

Reporting Problems

Roger Barker <[email protected]

I've just added the following to the Support section of the help:-

Reporting Problems
------------------
Because UI-View has five operation modes (WinPack DDE, TNC in terminal
mode, TNC in KISS mode, BPQ and AGWPE) it is important, when reporting
problems, to say what mode you are using.

If you are having problems with UI-View not recognising beacons, it is
very helpful if you include a sample of monitored data. You can do this
by opening the Terminal window, marking a sample of data by dragging the
mouse, pressing Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard, and then pasting it
into your message.

The idea that has been suggested of setting the unproto address to UI-
View is potentially a good one, because I realised some time ago that
there was a problem of telling who was running the program and who was
just putting out compatible beacons. The one slight problem is that an
unproto address of UIVIEW isn't APRS compatible.

Unproto set to UIVIEW?

Roger Barker <[email protected]

At the moment I'm not going to join in any bulletin discussion of UI-
View on the packet network, because I think it's only a matter of time
before the usual wreckers get at the topic. However, I have been keeping
an eye on the comments being made.

That is, of course, only a problem for APRS users! UI-View will accept
beacons sent to any address, because it looks at the structure of the
frame, not the address. I've always thought that APRS has got it wrong,
at least as far as usage in the UK is concerned, by recognising only a
few unproto addresses. However, I thought it was worth mentioning it,
before some APRS users pointed it out.

Someone suggested using an unproto address of APRS - I would definitely
not recommend that, because UI-View is not compatible with most of what
APRS does, and should not be regarded as an APRS program.

One thing that has occurred to me is that using different unproto
addresses could be used as a filter between different groups of UI-View
users sharing the same frequency. Perhaps it's looking too far ahead,
but I will make it possible, in the next update, to exclude by unproto
address besides excluding by callsign.

Support for UI-View?

UI-View has run for over 2 weeks at my QTH, with no notable bugs, its proving
to be an excellent package. Full marks to Roger (G4IDE), once again!

To keep Roger enthusiasm going, lets start to see ideas for addons, hardware
& software support for GPS & WX node, maybe other ideas not yet thought of?
Again this could be an unbeatable "British" software package, but it needs
your support!!

The problem with the copyright of the sample UK maps included with the
program has been sorted out, and I have got permission from both Attica
and the Ordnance Survey to use them.

I have now put together V0.6b. It has a few changes compared to V0.5b
(see below) and it acknowledges the OS. It is available for the next
couple of days from:-

Please do not publicise this link. It is there only for the use of
people who already subscribe to this list. I still want the distribution
of the beta version to be by means other than internet web sites.

The full history.txt is available from:-

but here are the changes since V0.5b:-

V0.6b 1999-Mar-24 1. Distance and bearing added to Station List.
2. "Randomize grid square plot" option added to
Miscellaneous setup.
3. If UI-View is configured to send WX beacons,
but the WX information is out of date, then it
will instead send the station beacon (if the
required information has been input).

Yes, it's caused by negative wind. :-)

I think you'll find that the WM918 reports wind chill to whole degrees
'C', but the actual temperature is reported to 0.1 degrees 'C' accuracy.
So, if it's calm, the wind chill can be higher.

Also, I'm not sure what formula the WM918 uses for its internal wind
chill calculation. My latest software is now calculating wind chill in
the program, based on the average wind speed over the past two minutes,
and a formula which is commonly used for wind chill calculation.

Re: Practical uses for UI-View

Alex Buurlage

Dear Friends,

In respect to the creation of high detailed maps, I plan to scan some ordnance maps of my town and local area. These are extremely detailed and I will probably manage to make my town screen filling, covering an area of some 2 by 2 miles.

I think the most accurate way of getting the right coordinates for the INF file is to actually drive to the upper left corner point on the map and read GPS coordinates at that point. Secondly you drive to the right lower corner and read the coordinates over there. Using this method elimates any inaccuracies which has been made by the producers of commercial maps.
It should be possible to get an accuracy within 50 yards or so. The same device which is used for position reporting on a map has been used for calibriation of the same map.

More accurate would not be possible, would it?

Any reactions on the above idea are welcome.

I am interested in seeing how UI type activity is developing in other parts
of the UK outside the York area.. Please send any images which show this to

Please use GIF format to cut down both uploading and downloading time. ;-)

Have fun y'all and thanks.

Re: Locator Beacons.

"Alan Strong" <[email protected]

Ken's request was prompted by a situation we have locally where the
randomisation is causing a gridsquare station in one locator square to
conflict with a home station in the adjacent square. In these circumstances
it would be useful to be able to either switch off the randomisation or
adjust it manually.

Hi,

Could a switch be put into the Setup - Miscellaneous box which
would allow
locator beacon randomisation to be enabled/disabled?
Yes, but they would then plot exactly on top of each other if there were
more than two in the same square.

Any more bugs?

Roger Barker <[email protected]

Apart from a problem with a duff link in the help file, I haven't had
any bugs reported with V0.4b.

I found one other slight problem in that, in WINPDDE mode, you could use
the "Query All Stations" option (all tx options are supposed to be
locked out in WINPDDE mode).

I've also rearranged the "Load A Map" list so the description comes
first, done a bit of rewording to one or two help topics, put a
LICENCE.TXT option on the Help menu, and added a Europe map.

Unless someone finds any other problems, I'll put V0.5b together this
weekend, and that will be the first public release.

It will be time limited to the end of May, and it will still carry the
restriction in LICENCE.TXT that it cannot be put on any internet sites.

Thanks.

"Ken Collins" <[email protected]

Hi Roger,

Thanks for the answers to my two queries.

I am forwarding the chill factor answer problem to Alan. He raised the query
with me.

No need to send a new Help file in response to the second one. This was just
part of the beta testing and I have no problems running the program. It is
all working great. I even de-installed W98 to Win 3.1 and apart from a map
color difference everything worked fine. I didn't mess about with the
palettes as I wanted to put W98 on again quickly.

Cheers.
