Road to Orsogna IABSM 6mm AAR 4
Greetings, An IABSM game from last November that was based on the Kiwi advance to Orsogna in December 43. Germans were in a tough spot but the New Zealanders didn't have a lot of room to manuever. Table edges: Advent Calendar 16 5
I'm enjoying another Advent Calendar and hope you are. I found Rich's thoughts on table edges really interesting and thought I'd add three comments to the conversation we're invited to have. 1. There have been a few wargames with a "rolling table" where one edge - usually the one behind the defender/in front of the attacker is added to the table as that behind the attacker becomes redundant. A great idea but not easy to do and the table only rolls 'one way'. If it started to roll off to the flank I'd get seasick! 2. Nearly all tables are oblong and games are either across the table or down the length of it. Three houses ago I had a square [6'x6'] table and that really posed a challenge to some players thinking. It also allowed corner to corner deployment with the middle of the table being the widest point when flanks could be in the air. Square tables seem to be the norm for smaller games. Does anyone use a round dining table without pretending it's square? What about a triangular table where you're the persians and the Spartans are just defending the pointy bit. Christmas star shape anyone? Probably not. 3. Smaller games-tables [or rather game areas], for those with the space, tend to provide room for all the clutter of the rules, dice, coffee etc. What if instead we use it as an opportunity on a small scale to see what happens when the table edges disappear. Take Sid's proposed 18" square table. If the gaming space is the central 18" but the town is modelled on something much larger -say 4' square - the action can spill off grid and we can work out "so how does that work?". This experiment of course works with skirmishes but I think Rich had in mind -what happens to a whole army with open flanks and large rear areas etc? {What if in Sharp Practice you had a water cart but it was two tables away?] 4. Sorry I know I said three. When I envisioned what Rich was talking about I thought of the areas off table as being devoid of troops. What if that's not the case. Imagine playing Chain off Command and when you get pushed left or right of your assigned sector you find yourself in an ajoining unit's sector and they are even busier than you were because they are under a full scale tank attack. Suddenly getting back onto your own 'table' seems a lot more inviting than staying off table in that sector. Thanks for the Calendar thoughts. Merry Christmas to all here Stephen [Duke of Baylen]

What's happening out there? 9
Since Elon cut off public viewing on Twitter/X, I've been cut off from Richard, Nick, Sydney and many other favorite TFL-related sites. And now Elon is talking about charging to be on X. Has there been discussion about changing from X to another platform? If so, will someone please post as such here so I can re-engage? Thanks Chuck

LardEhs IV Game Day in Hamilton, Ontario Oct. 28
Hello everyone, We'll be having our fourth TFL Games Day in southern Ontario on October 28th, from 9:30am to 7pm, in Hamilton, at the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry Veterans Hall on Barton Street. Details as we have them are up at http://twothreesixmm.blogspot.com/2023/04/lardehs-iv-october-28-2023.html Coming out of the pandemic we've been able to have three successful game days in the last couple of years, with 4-5 games per time slot, covering pretty much all of the TFL and Reisswitz Press library. We'd love to have more gamers out, feel free to follow along as the schedule develops on the blog, or we have an event page on Facebook under our more formal name of True North LardEhs, and we hang out on the Frozen Lard Facebook group too. Thanks, Chris

IABSM: Effect of being pinned
Question: Effects of being pinned. In section 4.3.1 it says a Pinned unit's "fire is calculated as being one range band worse" These ranges are Close, Effective and Long............ however in The Fire Table on the backpage it says in lower right corner... "fire with one column shift to the right."... with columns related to type of cover Which is correct? thx, Dan

Now that Twitter is members-only... 3
...and the TFL Facebook Group is comments-only, can people start posting here so I/we know what's going on? (Of course this assumes there are people still on this forum except me and a few others.) Thanks Chuck

Typical table size(s) for IABSM 3? 5
Newbie questions to follow. First I couldn't find except in the "roll your own scenarios" is any table size mentioned. There it mentions a 5 foot x 6 foot footprint for a possible table. So what works for you? Infantry only and vehicles rich as I assume vehicles will require somewhat more space. Thank you. Top

ACW Kriegsspiel
Have the kriegsspiel rules—1824, which is packaged with the 1828 revision, and just bought the 1862 rules. Which is better for American Civil War? Rifles but not yet needle guns in that conflict. 1862 is, therefore, out as written, but could they be modified? If so, how? 1824/1828 rules are both for smoothbore, right? Better to modify these rules ‘forward’ in time? How?

Battle of Bloody Marsh July 1742 Sharp Practice
I like to present something a bit different than the other games happening on our Game Days. This War of Jenkin's Ear scenario seemed liked a good pick. This was loosely based on the scenario from Chris Stoesen's supplement for Sharp Practice. For the Game Day I made it a 4 person 15mm game with 2 Spanish and 2 Crown players. The battle is basically an ambush of the Spanish troops who were advancing on Ft Frederica on St Simon's Island on the coast of the Georgia colony. How often do you get to have Highlanders, Redcoats, Native Americans and a colorful variety of Spanish fighting around a marsh? Holiday Sharp Practice game --2nd Seminole War 2
Another year gone so time for the Holiday game. This time I went for a completely different setting with the Second Seminole War set in the 1838ish Florida territory. It was a bit smaller than usual scenario with 4 players, 2 Seminoles, a militia group and a US Dragoon unit. I was playing the settler family. As with all Holiday games, I would conduct a quiz at the end of the turn (Water Break). The correct guesses get a Command chip to play in the upcoming phase. This year the questions were about Native American holiday myths and traditions and because of the setting we had several rounds of 'Floriduh Man' stumpers. (Hint: when in doubt assume the answer involves drunk and naked) I also had plenty of treats on hand including orange flavored chocolate--its Florida.
