Re: Micro Track AIO reprograming

Thanks! My house here in Napa is in escrow, and we are getting an apartment in Union, MO, while we house-hount in Washington, MO. One thing about the area is that many or most homes seem to be associated with HOA's...Joining an HOA is about as repugnant to me as joining the Nazi Party and becoming a multi-level marketer....But maybe they are not as bad as California's HOA's, where War Criminals can generaly find employment...If they don't let me put up antennas, I will be in deep Kimchee. Remember the Twilight zone episode where the fake St. Peter won't let the guy into heaven with his dog? (Because it was actually hell) I guess that will be my litmus test! I will be retiring from my Private Investigative business in California. I doubt they need what I do there very much in Washington, Missouri! But I plan to keep working with Byon and Byonis until I die of old age!?

Most of the questionable returns and repairs around the shop have either been thrown away or packed up...this means they are going to be living in PODS until I find a new shop. Stay in touch and I will let you know if I find anything in the bins when I set back up. Anything special you are looking for? I am glad you like your new AIO! I am pretty happy with the new version, and so far, no one has burst into flames frome standing too close to it when they run at "full military power" ( 20-ish Watts) Maybe I need to make a 30 Watt version :)

Re: Micro Track AIO reprograming

Nothing that you guys didn't mention, mostly operator error.?

1. I was using the wrong driver for the cable.

2. I tried to use my good old RealTerm software with the Trippel Esc protocol.

3. It was set to full power with weak batteries.

4. The program was set up for very frequent "arping."?

Thank goodness its antenna wasn't broken!

73, and thanks again.

Re: Micro Track AIO reprograming

Joe,

There is no problem replanting the PIC in a TT3 to try to configure it. If I understand your statement about the function of the unit, and it transmits about once per second after powering it on, the most likely problem is high SWR. Typically, this can happen when someone swings the unit around like a cat from it's tail, and the right angle SMA antenna connector breaks internally. Its still screwed to the Pelican case, but the internal connection is broken or intermittent. The easiest test for this is to turn the PWR ( power) control trimmer all the way off (CCW) which will prevent the amplifier from making enough power to make the unit reset due to excessive SWR. If you measure across the center conductor of the SMA connector to it's ground shield, you should see a 10K resistance. This is the static bleeder resistor there to protect the MOSFET amplifier.?

I, like many others, am actively working to sell my home and defect from California to the Midwest. If you don't mind waiting until I have an address for you to send the unit in my new location, I will be happy to test your AIO when my shop gear catches up to me in March.?

When I used the scope on my IC-9700 to look at its signal, I found that it's not transmitting an APRS packet at all.? It just keys the transmitter, generates a wide key-click, returns to receive, and repeats.? So, I'm thinking that it may be more than a programming and communication issue.? In any case, it didn't work.

Unless you tell me it's a dumb idea, I'm going to pull the chip from the unit and drop it into an unused TT3.? Then I'll connect the TT3 and read the chip using my standard com port/null modem to see if the chip is the root of all evil.? At the very least, I can make sure that it's programmed properly and then attack any remaining problems.?

Best Wishes and thanks for your help... Like I said, you made sense!

Joe,

You cannot program the MT-AIO with a terminal program; you will need to use the TT3 config program:?? Also, you will need to download and install the Prolifics USB Drivers from the Byonics website to use that USB programming cable. Other Prolifics drivers, and Windows Versions older than 10 may require a great deal of heartache and tears. One of the most common difficulties with configuring the AIO is that the serial jack's on units that have not been used a fair bit, may be very tight. Make sure you push the plug in firmly, even having the plug a tiny bit out of battery can deny your serial connection.

Re: Can I use a TT4 for both, replacing the TT3? (was AIO reprogramming)

There is a version of thr TT3 with firmware setup for Peet and other weather stations. I'm using it with a Baofang for our Club's weather station. It has been running for at least 5 years. It's powered by our solar system and drives an antenna on the top of a 185 foot tower. The antenna height is what is the big point for having a digipeater.
Appreciate the response re the TT4. I guess I just needed my memory reinforced.?

Hijacked Topic now a separate thread.
The TT4 is capable of both DIGI and Wx functions - you even acknowledge you had one doing that at your home station.

The only question is that is Wx Trax?? Is it a computer software package or a Wx station device?
I did an internet search and only "Wax Trax" or WxTrack showed up.

The next question would be whether the club station would have a computer attached - or stand alone.
I would guess stand alone as there is no need for a computer for the functions you are working with - UNLESS Wx Trax is a computer app.

Re: TinyTrak3 not found

I didn't realize the MT-2000 had a different configuration style than the other MicroTrak and TinyTrak products.
Sorry for the confusion!

Re: TinyTrak3 not found

The MT-2001 is a little different from? a TT3 or TT4. You do not ( and should not) enter the bootloader for any purpose other than reloading the firmware from a terminal program, or checking to make sure that you have not smoked the PIC. Attempting to play with the unit through the bootloader may result in a corrupted firmware. Please don't do that. We can fix a corrupted firmware, but you can't do it at your end. You don't have to worry about cycling the power at all when using the configuration program, it can edit the config anytime. The ( sometimes tricky) cycling of the power is only for the aforementioned bootloader.?

Configuration is generally accomplished by connecting to the MT-2001 to your computer via the 2.5mm jack. This requires the MT-2001 to be externally powered, as the USB-2.5 does not power the unit during programming. The most common difficulty with programming the MT-2001 this way is that the new, or rarely used, 2.5mm connector on the board is really tight, and it can look like you have fully seated it, but its not quite there. This is the time for brute force! Use plenty of horse power to seat the plug.

The second most common problem is that you did not select the Com Port which your PC has assigned your Prolifics USB cable to. You can see where your PC assigned your Prolifics USB device in the WIN device manager. There is almost no chance that any other USB device driver, other than the one that you need to download from the Byonics website, will work. This will not be a problem with WIN 10, but may present issues with WIN 11 ( Or as I call it affectionately, the OS of Satan)?

On the MT-2001, there is a separate connector for the GPS, its a 6 pin JST connector with 1mm spacing.? You could potentially program the unit through that jack, but it would be a PITA.?

The MT-2001 has set of four holes under the 2.5mm jack. Like most Micro-Trak devices, this will allow you to use the USB-TT3 programming cable with a four-pin adapter, and will provide power for programming. It's also a lot easier to cycle power with the pin connector for in-situ firmware loading with this connector. Byon would probably sell you one if you asked him nicely. It is the same adapter needed to program the new MT-AIO, and is provided free with that device.?

In order to get the Config area functions, you must place the TinyTrak device in "boot loader"
There are two important things that are required for "boot loader":
1. COMM port must match the USB device - bottom left corner (baud rate is controlled by application)
2. You must cycle power to the TinyTrak device without losing the COMM port.
? ? On the MT-2001, that would be the power connection to J4 (if powered by 9 - 12V).

If you are powering the MT-2001 through the GPS port (J1) and programming it using the USB-TT, this is less straight forward.
? ? The Byonics USB-TT interface supplies power to the TT device from USB, so unplugging and re-plugging at the computer typically?does not work,

If you are still unable to get connected, please provide more detail on how you are connecting the MT-2001 to your computer.

TT-USB switch

If there were a way to add a momentary (Normally Closed) switch on the 5V pin 4 of the TT-USB inside the DE9 case, that would make this device ideal.
Pressing the switch would allow the user to momentarily interrupt power to the TinyTrak device and allow it to go to the boot loader.

Just a thought if future changes are made to this device

TinyTrak3 not found

Hello,
I have a MicroTrak 2001 and am using TinyTrak3Config v1.4.6 to configure it.? However, when I "read version" or "read config", I get a "TinyTrak3 not found ()" error.? The MicroTrak is connected to my Windows 10 laptop via USB.? I did successfully configure it once, but have not been able to a second time.

Any ideas on how to get connected again?

Re: Aprsworld APO3 use

I don't see how an APO3 cutting off power would cause a problem with the TinyTrak.? It is no different that connecting and disconnecting power.
?? Was the transmitter on the same APO3???
?? What was the voltage cutoff set to?

I had a"very old" MicroTrack 8k that I had a simple cutoff circuit (not commercial) and a "well used" 12V SLA battery (1.4 Ah) on my bicycle.
Cutoff voltage was 11V, below that the voltage would really drop on TX.

The battery was so well worn, that it didn't last very long and I wanted to make sure I didn't have an issue with the transmitter.
The transmitter would do stranger things with low voltage.
