2712 SA that thinks it is a 2714

Bob Koller

I have a 2712 spectrum analyzer that thinks it is a 2714 (CATV) unit. The firmware installed is applicable to all the models, so it would seem that somewhere there is a jumper, or something, that tells the processor what the model is.
Any ideas?

Oh, and I have scoured both the 2712 and 2715 (apparently a 2714 with minor difference), service manuals without success.

I may be able to help you but since the original post was not appended I am not sure what the problem is?

Hi Dave,

My 2712 thinks it is a 2714/15 CATV analyzer, displaying Channels, and RF input in DBMV. There are also other Menu items pertaining to CATV.
On the Digital Storage board there is a term ENB2714\I, that when hi, enables 2714 mode. I have not been able to locate how the uP knows set this term hi. There must be some uP port somewhere with a jumper, pullup, etc, that enables this function, but I cannot find it.
I have carefully looked through both the 2712 SM, late version, and the 2715 SM, to no avail.

Many years ago I found there were some zero ohm resisters that
enabled or disabled various personalities and options for this family.

Not clearly shown on the published schematics IIRC. But
obvious on the motherboard.

Some other options depend on having a board present and sensed
at bootup.

If you have a "real" 2712 you can look at it might be worth
comparing (cellphone photos help with this) all the zero ohm resistors
you can find, and in general look for parts stuffing differences.

Thanks Dave,
Which board(s) might have these?

Bob

I have the 2714 service manual

?I Thought at first that someone may have swapped a board from a parts unit but the microprocessor board in the 2712 and the 2714 is the same, Dave Emery may be more on the right track about a zero ohm resistor on the mother board. I will look through the 2714 manual closer later tonight..headed out the door right now

I remember some on the main motherboard in particular.

Eureka! I have found it!
R882, a 10 ohm resistor on the PSU/Mother board selects the 2712/2714 bit. This area is located on A15A1 Sh 6, of the 2712 service manual.

Thanks for the help!
