Guide on eBay to 11000 series and DSA scopes

For those who may be interested in purchasing one of these
oscilloscopes on eBay or elsewhere, I have written a brief guide
outlining what I have found so far. I have included input from Denis
Cobley regarding various models. I do not pretend to be any sort of
authority on these units, but I have been working on several units and
learning some interesting things. I would be happy to have any comments
and input I can get from anyone who has had experience working with or
servicing these units. And thanks to Denis for his help.

Re: Plugin-In Clarification.

Dennis Tillman

Unfortunately there is no readout version of these plugins. What you are
probably seeing is someone being sloppy with the number and dropping the N.
For many, it is common knowledge that the plugin has no readout hence there
is no need to mention the N in conversation with others in the know.

If you think about it, there are 3 critical pieces of information that you
need to know when displaying transistor curves. You need to know the
Horizontal Volts/Div, the Vertical Current/Div, and the size of the base
steps in Current/Step. Nearly all single wide plugins can only accommodate
two readouts (one along the top of the screen and one along the bottom).
This was probably a factor that affected the decision not to include
on-screen readout when designing the plugin.

When in doubt, you should first check one of the lists of Tek 7000 plugins
published on the web.

David DiGiacomo is kind enough to publish my comprehensive list if 7000
series and compatible equipment. It is the most complete list available
anywhere that I am aware of. It can be found at

Mark Kahrs maintains a very good list, with photos, at

I've seen references over the net and in personal posts about a 7CT1
and 5CT1. However, I haven't, maybe overlooked 'em, found a
reference. I've only found references to the 7CT1N and 5CT1N.

Is there such an animal as the 7CT1 OR 5CT1 curve tracer plug-ins for
the 5000 and 7000 series scopes with READOUT? If so, that would be a
convenience. I've a 5000 series and 7000 series scope, both with
readout. The 5000 boy came with a 5A48 and 5B42. I've a NOS w/
manual on the way (good backup). They are both equipped with readout.

7A26 IC removal

From: "Christopher Hilton-Johnson"

Greetings etc

The 7A26 has 8 ICs (Tek part: 155-0078-xx) each of which has 16 pins
fully
surrounding all 4 sides. I need to replace one of these ICs.

I think that they are pressed (not soldered) into the board.

Does anyone have a fool ( me!) proof way of getting these out without

damage/special tools etc?

Not foolproof but...

I got a small, cheap screwdriver and heated the end of the blade to red
heat and bent it into an "L" with about 1/8" to 3/16" exposed to make a
small pry bar. Then I carefully and gently pried up the four corners in
turn until the thing was loose.

BTW, you should look with a magnifier to make sure the thing is
socketed, not soldered first.

Greetings,

With a little Patience, you can alternately raise each corner with a scribe until it is worked free. The pins are frail and will break easily.

What's scope cal equipment worth and how to ship it?

<snip>
If I gotta ship 'em, how should I do it?
I have visions of them arriving with the tubes
shattered all over the insides. Should I pull
the tubes and ship separately? Other tricks?
Thanks, mike
<snip>
Hi, mike
probably stating the obvious, but if you do remove
the tubes LABEL them with their chassis/socket
designators so they can be put back in the sockets
they were pulled from. Otherwise the calibration
could suffer

Fiber Glass Shaft Material 1/8"

Stan and Patricia Griffiths

I acquired several 4 foot lengths of 1/8" diameter fiber glass shaft
material from that HUGE estate I mentioned the other day. I'm sure I recall
someone here saying they needed a piece of it. It would be difficult to
ship it in 4 foot lengths but I can cut a piece to your dimensions and ship
that. If you need some, let me know. $1.20 per foot (10 cents per inch)
plus shipping.

Re: old fashioned 535 - first start after 35 years

Hmm? There is quite a lot of reading material printed on the chassis.
Probably just concealed beneath all the dirt :)
BTW, does your unit still have the original solder spool inside? (Do
read the old discussions on this forum regarding solder types to use
and not use on the ceramic strips).

I followed the advice to "wash" the scope what I did two days ago. Now it's drying in a warm room.

There is some solder spooled in the back and I read about some advices not to use solder without silver.

Let me wait some more days until it's really dry. Then I'll have a look at all parts and after remounting the tubes I try a first start...

Hi Michel,

The only part that I know of in that scope that can be damaged by
water is
the power transformer and then usually only if you submerge it in
water or
use water with a lot of metal ions in it. You could always remove
the power
transformer to keep it away from the water and wash the rest of the
scope
with detergent and water. Warm water works best.

I have never heard of using caustic potash to clean a scope so I am
not sure
how this will work. I would not do it.

Hi Stan,

well, I had really doubts thinking about changing the capacitor of this
scope. The one I bought from you seems working fine. There are a lot
more capacitor rolled in paper and with no printed value on it.
In general it's pretty hard to find any resistor or capacitor on the
scope accord to the schematics. There is no part definition printed like
on modern pcbs.

And the dirt covers really everything, especially the wiring with it's
colour scheme.
Maybe it's best first to clean this device but all post from the past
concerning this issue are not really usefull. From outting it into the
dishwasher to placing it into the bath tube and showering it... Hmmm,
it don't want to try this.
The easiest way to get rid of this dirt is caustic potash. It nags the
aluminium and the dirt very good. But without unmounting nearly every
part the cleaning won't be succesful.
I thought about changing all electircal part except of tubes and coils
and special parts at all. What do you thin about that ?

Michael

'bout to uncontrollably buy. There are other symptoms too : )

Re: What's scope cal equipment worth and how to ship it?

Johnny Chapman

Aren't you the guy with the website that has all the
neat stuff for trade like calculators, motorized
variacs, Tek Application notes, and other stuff?

If so, you've sure got a market here in this group!
I've sent you a personal email and look forward to
your reply.

As far as packing, well lets say I'd need to know how
many tubes, location, ....

I'd say not off the top of my head as I've packed raw
tubes and received equipment with tubes sometimes
removed and other times not. In each case everything
faired well.

Me, Well I'd make sure that none of the sockets were
loose. I'd also be wary of removing the tubes
designations and markers by taking them from their
sockets. Sometimes, cause of age, it just rubs right
off. Then for a person like me, well a scratching
head frenzy would begin : )

One way to ease the shipping would be to kinda wad/pad
the interior between tubes with something like a brown
paper sacks material or this other stuff I only get
when I'm mailed stuff. It's sorta like a earthen
color webbing made obviously of some type of woven
paper or fabric. You could easily just weave it
around and over the tubes, leaving them in place.

I'd then make sure to place the entire item in a box
for regularity and foam around or big bubble wrap
around it inside another box. You could even add some
foam or bubble wrapping inside the inner box.

Just a suggestion, for I re-use packing materials. I
rarely buy anything. Sometimes you can get Great
stuff from the furniture stores! That foam in the
sheets that covers dining tables and the finer
furniture is great too!

I ask to dumpster dive on weekends, at least I used to
when I had time. You can even get the wooden sheets
that are like an 1/8" thick too. Sky's the limit.

Take care. I don't think I've heard any of your posts
before but dunno; however, I know you are very
knowledgeable, if that's your website; and you'd
definitely be a great asset : )
