I'd be happy to re-home one, particularly the non-working one. I'm always up for a fun project if it's got Tektronix written on the front! :D

Scope seems to be in "chop" mode based on the position of "Display" knob. Are you applying the same signal to both channels? You could be seeing Ch1 and Ch2 together, I see that triggering is on Ch2, and Ch1 and Ch2 gains are not the same (Ch2 red knob is also out of cal position).

If you switch coupling to GND for one of the channels, pick trigger and input source for the active channel, do you still see two waveforms?

Anode of CR1457 is the same node as collector of Q1455. Seeing -0.37 to -0.65V doesn't have an easy explanation when collector of Q1555 is ~ 1V. What voltages do you see at Ch2 hybrid, HY1430, pins 1, 3, 4, 5, 16, 17, 19?

Pin1 should be at ~ 1V when channel is disabled, ~ 2V when it is enabled. It is the same node as the collector of Q1455 but perhaps there is a broken trace between them so it is best to measure at the pins of the hybrid.

Re: 7603 testing with only one plugin ?

Not only does the Horz plugin in provide the sweep signals it ALSO provides the positioning as well as blanking disable. In the absence of signal the dot is there but it is pulled off the side of the screen. Left side if I remember correctly. The drive signals also provide blanking disable. So the dot might be in the middle of the screen but the blanking circuit is keeping the beam current driven off.

It's looking like it's pin A1 ("gate").
In the 7A17 (which unblanks the CRT, but does NOT provide a "sweep"), pin A1 is tied to +5 coming in from pin A8.
In a typical sweep plugin (such as 7B50), pin A1 is driven by the plugin's Gate output circuit.
I'll try it...

Re: 7603 testing with only one plugin ?

It just occurred to me that the REASON removing the horizontal plugin blanks the CRT is (probably) because a normal "sweep" plugin needs to support retrace blanking, and (I'm now thinking) that the retrace blanking signal defaults to "blanked" when nothing is plugged in.
SO, if look at a typical sweep plugin schematic, I can find the pin that is used for retrace blanking...

Re: Is it possible that the 151-0367-00 transistor story is horribly wrong?

"The software was made by a Danish Engineer, who gave it away on the forums as freeware. I think this was the mistake of his life."

I'll share my story - we also made the mistake of our lives!

In the late 1970's, I was part of a very small South African company - we developed the world's first ultrasonic car alarm. The same alarm that has been installed in one form or another on millions of cars since.
In 1980, I led the team to exhibit it at the Chicago Consumer Electronics Show.
The response was beyond our wildest dreams, and I specifically remember a Chinese company, which still exists today, which placed an order for 100 units, and paid for them on the spot.
We continued to sell a few thousands, and one day later that same year, I got a shock.
One of my customers sent me a photo of a leaflet showing an attractive copy of our alarm, made in Taiwan, and now marketed in North America, at a price well below our own manufacturing cost.
Our legal advice was that we messed up not patenting it, and there was nothing we could do.
A hard lesson learnt; we all moved on to bigger and better things, but much wiser and highly distrustful of the Chinese as thieves and counterfeiters of others' brainwork - all subsequent developments in the Automotive Electronics field were patented properly.
Next time you activate your car alarm, take a second to remember the original and genuine inventors!

No, there would be a "dot" that does not move horizontally. Lack of "sweep" is different from lack of "trace" (in my mind).
Note that the 7A17 is a very basic plugin - it is just a simple amp that drives either the X or Y amp of whichever slot it's plugged into. When I plug in the horizontal slot (with no vertical), there is a dot on the screen. If I apply an AC signal to the input of the 7A17, then I get a horizontal "sweep".
But with the 7A17 in a vertical slot, the CRT is blanked.
SO, one or more of the signals on the horizontal slot is blanking the CRT.

I have a 7603 that I'm trying to do basic check-out on. But I only have one
7000-series plugin (a 7A17).
The 7A17 can operate in either vertical or horizontal slots, but the 7603 does
not produce a trace at all without a horizontal plugin (the manual confirms
this is the case, but doesn't say why). So I have confirmed that the horizontal
works, but cannot test the vertical.

Questions:
Why is the trace disabled without a horizontal plugin? A vertical is not
required...
Can I temporarily "hot wire" the horizontal slot, so that I can test the
vertical slots with my 7A17 ? Looking at the schematic, it's not clear which
pins are involved in disabling the trace when the plugin is missing.

Thanks!
Pete

I have done a smattering of such work (at a far less professional-looking level) in a past life, and until you've done it, you cannot comprehend the amount of effort required. You are a GIFT to this hobby and interest! Thank you. I have the new book downloaded and am now going through it. Again, thanks for the superb work!

Hi,
I have no idea if you can help me or not so here goes...

My name?is Kristin and I am the executor of my uncle's?estate. He has a
significant amount?of specialized electrics equipment (oscilloscopes,
multimeters, and other stuff that I am not sure what it even is).? I
have someone that has offered?to purchase the entire lot of it.?
However, I'm looking for someone that I can look at the stuff and give
me an idea of what a good price might be.? As the executor, I can pay
for your time to do an assessment, if this is something that you can do.
If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please let me know.

By the way, I found your email by looking up the TEK Country Store.? He
used to go there a lot and I assume that people who are familiar with
the place might know what some of this stuff is.

Thanks for any help you can?provide.

Re: 24XX Scope Case Gluing Result JB Weld Plastic Bonder

I don't know if this is applicable or not in this case.

I recently found out about a primer that can be used with super glue so that it can be used with materials that it normally will not bond with - even teflon.

It is available on eBay for a fraction of the price of local suppliers - Just look at Super Glue Primer or CA Glue Primer.

Brian.

Re: 24XX Scope Case Gluing Result JB Weld Plastic Bonder

Chuck Harris said he uses Acrylic solvent with the needle applicator if that helps. I would not have thought to try that because I would guess it is for sure not acrylic, and have never used that solvent for any other types.

Yes, it would be nice to know the plastic types on Tek equipment or how to identify them as that is the best approach. You could shave a sliver with a razor blade and do a flame test and compare to online photos for plastic ID.

maybe before sending emails to various lists you should send out my

January and have ignored all emails about since.

All the best
