Re: 7904 plug-in connector pins
I have replaced socket pins several times but it takes a little practice and I wouldn't do it unless I had the board out. I have an interface board from a scrapped mainframe which I use for spare contacts. The connectors have snap-on side covers which must be in place for the connector to work properly. These tend to get brittle with age and crack when you try and remove or reinstall them. I think getting those back into place successfully is harder than actually replacing the bent contacts.

7904 plug-in connector pins
The recently fixed 7904 has no readout in the A-horizontal slot. I found the likely obvious cause - some bent and broken off contacts near the top of the plug-in connector. I believe that these contacts can be replaced individually, in situ, but have never needed to do it, so not absolutely sure. I have entire spare main interface boards, so could conceivably replace the whole thing, but that seems like an awful lot to go through.
I could tell by looking at the spare parts, but they're at another location. Could someone please confirm whether these contacts can be replaced individually? I'm picturing turning the scope on its back and performing the surgery all from the plug-in compartment side. Ed |
Re: 7844 PS fix - another bad Ta cap story
The 7904 is still going this morning, so will call it fixed, PS-wise. I also found I had marked a note on it before that it has a readout problem in the A-horiz slot, so maybe will look at that too. BTW this one also has the P11 blue phosphor. I think about one-half of 7904s I've encountered are P11.

Re: New HomeMade TM500 Extenders
Thanks for sharing Philippe. Some interesting differences to the usual
extenders I've come across. I think I'd be happier with quality goldplated edge connectors though. Malcolm On 27 March 2016 15:18:37 "nixie@... [TekScopes]" <TekScopes@...> wrote: Hi everyone, |

There's nothing wrong with your English. I didn't have any trouble understanding it. Nice job on the extenders. On 27/03/2016 10:18 AM, nixie@... [TekScopes] wrote:

Philippe,
Very nicely built! This is the type of thing that reaffirms to me the extremely knowledgeable and talented company I am in. I am simply amazed when I see this type of ingenuity, engineering, and knowledge. Your English is very good (better than my non-existent French) so please don't apologize for it. I don't have a need for this extender (I wish I did because it is a work of art) but wanted to say thank you and pass along a thank you to all the others who share their seemingly endless knowledge and ideas (along with their patience) with a mere layman like myself. I feel very fortunate to be a member of this group and appreciate all the electronics knowledge you folks pass on to me. Thanks for sharing, Philippe, and thanks to everyone for sharing their knowledge. We now return to regular scheduled programming. Happy Easter! He is risen. John To: TekScopes@... From: TekScopes@... Re: DC508A Display
Just a shame the quality of some sockets they used was poor.

Re: 7854 RAM card upgrade only - any interest?
Brian,
Please do contact Solano and let me know what the answer is. I have been busy and out of town in the last week or two, so have been inactive here. I was about to ask on the list that we define the next steps and who would carry them out, including creating a proper list of interested parties. There is no formal decision making process, so I cannot speak for the group, but if the buyer of the diagnostic card is found and willing, we could consider discounting a memory card to him as compensation for giving up the card long enough for someone to extract the ROM images. After all, he is the owner of a candidate scope. Cliff |
Re: 7854 Repair & Restoration
I picked up a set of PX625 mercury cells that should work to replace the one bad battery that my 7S14 has.
I'm definitely interested in changing out the cells for a more permanent fix in the future, but for now the unit is fully functional. I have a massive number of repairs to get done and lately have had very little time for my hobby as a whole. I've not yet even had a chance to fully figure out if U50 is bad on this 7854. Unfortunately, the one thing taking current priority when I have any time at all to do so, is wrapping up one of these 485's so I can get it listed and sold. (I have a couple tickets I forgot to pay, so now I'm risking a license suspension!) In my endeavor to simply calibrate the 485, I found that BOTH of my 106's have a common issue which renders them absolutely useless for driving a TD pulser!! So my apologies go to those who have been helping me with this 7854 and also to those following along. I really wish I had more time! I pray that I can catch a break soon.... Thank you all for all the help and knowledge! One of these days I will have a firm grasp of all the fundamentals and enough experience to be a real contributor to this great gathering of minds and resources. -Brian |
Re: 7854 RAM card upgrade only - any interest?
Cliff,
I have been in contact with Solanotraders over the past several months due to a large number of purchases from them. If no one has asked them about the diagnostic card buyer, I can do so. I think it's probably worth a shot at least. I'm wishing I would have just purchased that unit when I had the chance... It's quite likely that you can count me in for 2 of these RAM/ROM boards. I'm hoping I don't have to butcher the 2nd scope to resolve the vertical amplifier issue on my better 7854. I'll be going through a few manuals to see what scopes share the same vertical amp board so I can try to pick up a cheap board donor scope. -Brian |
Re: DC508A Display
Thank you David & Philippe - I'll try swapping out the 7447, I've got plenty lying around. Unfortunately it is not socketed, and it's partially buried under the RF section.
Philippe - that's a great page, thanks for sharing! Google translate seems to be handling it OK. cheers, Paul |
Re: ESR meters (again)
Hello,
I purchased the DE-5000 from one of the ebay sources about 2 months ago, took about a month to get here(NC, USA). after unwrapping popped a battery in it and started using it immediately mainly for going through pile of dropped 603 smd caps ( yea im cheap that way). I got it with the smd probe which is spring loaded after a while your hand gets tired. Measures my lowest value caps 20pf no problem, also has auto component detect. Anyway I still have alot to learn about this product and reading the post on this topic was very helpful thanks to all the members that replied. |

Be warned the "Health and Safety" thought police will be after you :)I miss having Deane's take on real world electronics. Well I miss Deane full stop. I shudder to think what he thought of ROHS - he (like me and I would think many others) used is mouth as a third hand to feed solder into a joint; when this list muttered about lead he pointed out that he had done it that way all his working life and had absolutely no problem. So that leaves a z-axis problem. I do not think it can be just aNo readout either? I thought you just missed the trace. If no readout either, David is right of course and my grid bias adjustment won't help. Raymond |
