Ok Folks,

In the photos section i put a few pics of my 2465B - A5 board - U2420 Testing. ?

?

Could you guys take a look at my readings and help me understand what I have going on here?

The voltages in green are Voltage Drop across a resistor or if they are next to a U2420 Pin then they are the actual voltage at the pin. ?If they are in red they are the voltages at that end of each respective resistor.

I have the pic of the KNOWN GOOD 2445B scope A5 board for comparison as well as the A5 Board Layout. ?I have verified the -1.25 reference and it is rock solid. ?I have verified that all resistors are reading the correct value especially after the replacement of the electrolytics and renewal of the reference ladder.

Am I dealing with a bad op amp or two inside U2420? ?What say you?

Bert,

?

There is free software that is much better than this which will take measurements of R, L, and C using your PC sound card called RCL-meter. It can measure

- capacitances (5pF to 5uF)

- inductances (5uH to 50mH)

- resistances (5 Ohm to 50 MOhm)

?

The required external hardware is just 2 resistors and 2 capacitors.

Re: Gov't Auction - Tek 'scopes

Agreed. I was honest when I dealt with them and at one point sent back a piece of gear I had put a ton of time and money into (which they do NOT reimburse you for). It was said to have a condition code of A but when I got it, it looked like nothing like in the photo and was marked as F. I bet someone walked off with a nice unit for cheap.

Most items can be gotten from ebay or hamfests for a lot less, and no shipping hassles! So unless it's something really special I simply avoid them.

I recently tried to log in and they want me to make a new password with funky rules. I didn't, so haven't logged back in. Stupid little thing but I am so displeased about them otherwise it might just be enough to keep me away.

One should be warned about government auctions- if, down the road, someone decides that the items should not have been sold for whatever reason, they will come asking for you to return them. I received no documentation with the scope purchase.

The most frequent application for me is in working with SMPS transformers although
this is not mentioned in the article.
With a scope, it is possible to determine the winding ratio, phase, and even make
a close guess as to the number of turns.
To do this, assuming that you have the space, you wind on a given number of turns,
pulse the transformer with this tester and observe the other winding on the scope.
As an added benefit to this you can short this added winding while driving and
watching another winding as a test for shorted windings in the transformer.

Lots of other uses for the small and inexpensive tool.

I'm just finishing the building of another one of these using a solar pathway
light as a starting point.
It should be always charged up and ready to go just from the ambient light in my shop.

Isn't it really strange that they decide only some time after you get the item that they shouldn't have sold it?
Seems a bit late...

I've read about destruction of sensitive equipment once, they even accounted for the possibility of information burnt into the screen, in which case the CRT was supposed to be smashed....

Oh well, and here I was going to buy that military hospital, better not then.... ;-)

Re: Bright dots at start of the trace on a 547

The unblanking signals from the A and B sweeps are combined in the
horizontal display switch (SW530 5R and 5F located on schematic 2). I
would start looking for a problem there. Does wiggling that switch
make any difference?

Since it is so easy, you may want to check for the presence of the A
and B gate outputs which are copies of the two separate unblanking
signals before the horizontal display switch.

You are dead right Albert about changing the sweep time/div with the VAR knob. It seems the retrace comes from the last section of the end of the trace and changes up and down while turning on the knob.

I also checked the +350V and it?s still correct after the repair of C730. It is +353V with about 5mV ripple, completely in specs just as the other voltages from the power supply. All of them have only a few millivolts of ripple and the voltages are comfortable in specs.

When I turned the scope on today only the B timebase have the "dot problem", the A time base functioning correct. Very weird!

Suggesting that the problem is in the unblanking circuit in wich part of the circuit the defective component can be?

Maybe a capacitor or a tube, ideas?

Hi Rene,
If you slowly change the sweep time/div with the VAR knob then you will see the retrace jumping from lower to higher level and vice versa. You will see why when you adjust Horizontal Position such that you can see the end of the trace.

PS Fred: some people have to work tomorrow;=)

Hi Albert and Fred, people are really quick on this forum :-)
I put the scope on a few minutes ago and I have now two dots; one below and one above in the trace picture.

When it?s not trigering there are (ofcourse) no lines but only two dots. Also on Ext. gives the same two dots.
But the retrace line as Fred called it is in the lower part of the trace when the trigger is set to negative and at the upper part when trigering is set to positive.
It?s now already a bit late here in Holland so tommorrow I check the +350V line again.
Thanxxxx so far!

Hello, Craig and the group--

Craig's (and others') correction is absolutely, well, correct<g>.
I apologize for any confusion that I may have introduced.

I was thinking of the business end of a probe and the
coil-spring-like fitting that slides over the probe's metal
ground barrel that's close to the probe tip.

See the "sprung earth tip" here...

Hi,
?
I can understand how this could happen, but I wonder if it is more stories than not.
?
Several decades ago I worked in the surplus electronics buiness and we did a lot of gov't bidding as did other folks in the field.? We did have federal agents check on "us" every X years, but that was all.

Hello, Mike--
That's indeed its purpose. IIRC, a length of wire presents approximately
20
nanohenries per inch of length. Introducing extra inductance between the
probe and the circuit under test can seriously distort waveshapes. Also,
the
loop formed by the probe ground wire can pick up extraneous noise radiated
by nearby circuits.

Yes - or simply that the probe is a 10X or 100X if it is not
switchable.

Power Supply Transformer needed for Tek 2710

Hi All,

This is probably a long shot, but I have a 2710 Ebay special with a defective transformer in the primary side of the switcher - T290. I bought this a year or so ago, and decided to take a look at it this weekend. Seller was honest and said "plugged up and unit smoked." Yep, one of the RF connectors was loose, and laying across terminals on T290 and that's what smoked.

Anyone have a parts unit, or a suggested source for a replacement? ID is T290, Tek part number 120-1776-00, Mfr. part number 128-7050-00.

Thanks for any help you can provide. I am not looking to part this unit out.

Rick
