I'm not sure what you mean by "dot crawl". Are you referring to
the mesh ghosting?
No, given it goes away when I switch end of scan updates for the OSD
on I imagine it's just the gun moving to update the OSD and, thus,
causing a brief break in the waveform trace.

2. Sometimes the mainframe cuts out with a crack - only to return
again.
THAT doesn't sound good!
No - I know have a service manual and will stripdown the HT section.
I'm guessing it's a dry joint on the line transformer.

3. Using the storage facility in variable persistence works
fine using both normal/fast modes. However, when using bistable
storage the background is very bright and ,hence, there is very
little contrast between the background and the sample. I've
adjusted
both the controls detailed in the service manual to no effect.

Steve, the bistable mode on the variable-persistance scopes (7623,
7633, 7834, 464 and 466) aren't at all like the bi-stable storage
you
may be used to with the 564B, T912, 314, 214 and 434 or the 4000-
series graphics terminals and 4051/52 desktop computers. You will
have a bright background and lousy -- REALLY lousy -- contrast.
I've
never found a reason to use the bistable mode vs. the variable
persistance or high-speed modes on those scopes.
Ahhh - thanks. Does sound more like a feature. It's almost perfect in
variable persistance mode - I just expected the same in bistable. The
service manual doesn't really outline the differences between the two
modes and how they physically function.

Overall it's a great piece of kit - I originally bought it with the
7L12 purely for spectrum analysis use - but the range of plugins (at
reasonable prices) just make it such a flexible piece of gear.

Thanks for your help,

Steve.

Re: Power supply Tektronix 465

Miroslav Pokorni

My limited experience with 465 was a dried electrolytic, still some
capacitance, around 20% of nominal. I also heard from other people about
broken caps (open circuit) or drastically reduced value. The size of cap can
be a challenge when fitting in 465, when I did it I had to buy part from
Tektronix.

Subject: [TekScopes] Power supply Tektronix 465

Hi,

I am the owner of used Tektronix 465 with instruction manual
since two
weeks.
First I started the calibration procedure.

I?ve found in the power supply which is normally 110 VDC a
voltage of 145 VDC
and the ripple voltage is 2 VAC ( normally 20 mVAC).

In my instruction manual I am still missing the schematic
number <12> of the
power supply.

Can anybody tell me a solution for this problem.
and if it is possible to send me a scanning of the schematic
<12>.

Best regards

Re: option 78 r7903

Miroslav Pokorni

I checked catalog from 1988. Option 78 is what Stan said, P11 phosphor only;
a good photographic phosphor, but a god awful blue color that hurts eyes.
The other things that you are talking about, higher acceleration voltage,
resulting in reduced active screen, so the graticules are made smaller to
fit deflection, together with P11 phosphor makes Option 13.

If mechanical differences that you are talking about is a camera adapter
permanently bolted to the scope, that is a private modification done by (or
for) EGG; I have one of that kind. If that is the case, I would advice to
resist urge to remove bolts, that did cost me several hours of work without
anything to show for it. These bolts are deeply imbedded into the frame, I
believe that I had to move CRT to get one of bolts out.

I do not find that scope really useful, I hate the color of the trace, whole
screen is too small, there are only 3 slots. My lame excuse for buying the
package was that for $200 I got 2 pcs of 7A19 (at the time when they were
selling for $100 a piece), an indifferent time base (I think it was 7B80 and
I had few already) and mainframe was there, I thought I will get some parts
to fix other power supply.

It turned out that 7A19 had a strange option that I did not find described
anywhere: trace position was recessed the way GAIN control is and there was
no IDENTIFY button. I bet, Tektronix does not have that option listed. In
the haste to get my paws on a 7A19 I did not notice that there was no
POSITION control. Mind you, these were among first 7A19 that I saw in flesh.

There were lot of scopes like that on the market, good number of them with
EGG property tags. It looks to me, these were some of maybe thousands of
scopes seating on the 19" racks, used at Nevada test site. Time base had
marked setting, intensity had a marker, too, and so did attenuators for both
7A19, the whole scope setting was pre-canned.

Hello,

What is option 78 for the r7903?

I checked the reference section on reprise and the jug
154-0644-09
goes into a r7903 with opt 78 and nothing else. Is it a
special jug?
For example higher PDA voltages and smaller divisions?
Mechanical
differences?

Thanks

Do they all do this?

Hello All,

I'm not sure if my scope is construed as a classic and, therefore, if
I've posted this to the wrong group I apologize.

Anyway, I recently purchase a 7623A mainframe along with 7L12, 7A26
and 7B53A plugins. These all work fine and I'm jolly impressed with
the scope given that standard of kit I've used in the past.

I do have 3 questions, though:-

1. I was getting "dot crawl" on the trace, which was especially
apparent on the 2m/s horizontal setting (even with no vertical
plugins fitted). Switching OSD update function from interrupt drive
to end-of-trace removed this problem. I presume this is a "feature"
and, hence, the reason for the switch?

2. Sometimes the mainframe cuts out with a crack - only to return
again. I only noticed this happening since fitting the 7A26+7B53
plugins (left socket isn't used with just 7L12). I'm guessing it's a
problem in the HT circuit? Is there a favourite candidate for this
problem?

3. Using the storage facility in variable persistence works
fine using both normal/fast modes. However, when using bistable
storage the background is very bright and ,hence, there is very
little contrast between the background and the sample. I've adjusted
both the controls detailed in the service manual to no effect.

Thanks for any answers you may have,

Steve.

7854 High Voltage Multiplier needed

Doug Hale

Does any have a 152-0716-00 or know where I can get one. This is
a times 7 high voltage multiplier. It converts the 3KV high voltage from
the HV transformer
to the 21KV CRT Anode supply.

This is a black epoxy potted module approx. 1" 2" X 3"

The Markings on it are:

VMI
VM 164
152-0716-00
8703

I assume 152-0716-00 is the Tek part number
8703 is a date code

Thanks

Tek 2336YA

August 23, 2001
I have just bought a 2336YA on eBay w/o manual etc. Can
someone suggest a quick way to get the basic operating instructions?
Alternatively (and anticipating need to calibrate etc in the future)
is parting with $70 plus for aservice manual the best choice? What
are the recommended probes for this model?

Suggestions from more experienced hands would be greatly
appreciated. I last worked with Tek's 40 years ago: they seem to have
changed a bit in the interim.
