Other than cooling (ie ensuring that the fan intake is not
obscured), and ensuring that the fan does not do a good job of
vacuum cleaning the floor and depositing it in the scope, I can
think of no reason why not.
Thanks everyone. My 535A has started misbehaving again and I was
wondering if that could be the reason. Maybe it's an intermittent
contact in the 1A1 edge connector. I'll have to investigate...

Yes, the fan suck dust and fluff from the floor necessitating
frequent cleaning of the filter - otherwise no problems that I am
aware of.

There's the 2246 operator's manual off this fellows page.

I've never seen the service manual for the 2246 available "free" online
anywhere. (Though I wouldn't mind finding one. - If for no other reason to
flip through)

Are the measurements accurate for what you see, or is the trace compressed?

None in MA that I know of

ESS in Manchester NH (Exit 6 off I-93N) take right off of exit and it's about a 1/2 mile on your left on Candia Road they have a substantial Ebay presence as well and you can pick up your Ebay stuff there and not risk damage in shipping.

Store has Electronic parts (new), industrial surplus, racks and power supplies most of the 'good' test gear goes to ebay

Peter Gottlieb wrote:

Anybody know if there are any decent surplus stores left in MA? Like where they have Tek or HP gear?

Now that I work there, figured I'd ask.

Also looking for a local place I could buy (and pick up) a 19" rack or two.

Re: 2430A CCD and PA fail... bad NVRAM?

Hi,

I hope this post isn't bad new for your but here goes:

Make sure you point an external fan at the CCD when running outside
the cover. Even 10 minutes of operation with the CCDs being cooled is
enough to destry them.

I hope you have a 2430A abover serial number B015xxx, anything below
that is going to be painful.

Also, the usual CCD failure will not really show up until you use
REPET mode. You see this on ebay all the time "This scope has CCD
failures but I input a signal and it works great!"

Yeah, at 1ms/Div. Try a fast signal and using 100ns/Div or faster.

Re: 535A stood on its end

I don¡¯t think the 535A cares what position it is in as long as the air flow
through the fan filter is not restricted.

Re: Obsolete part needed for repair

It is a 5082-3081, currently manufacturer by Avago. It is available in single quantities from Farnell and Mouser.

Does anyone know where I can locate the following obsolete part?

HP3081

If not, can you provide me with a data sheet that I can use to find a
suitable cross reference?

The part is not for a Tektronix Scope, it is a pin diode used in a
Advantage Instruments SA1300C Spectrum analyzer that I am repairing.
There are 2 diodes in series connected to the input of the spectrum
analyzer (both HP3081's). Unfortunately, 1 has blown and I would like
to get a few of these in case of future problems. So far the only
places I can find them are places that locate obsolete parts like
USBID, but they have a $250 minimum order. Does anyone know of a
suitable replacement for this?

I figured that it was worth a chance asking here, since there are many
knowledgeable people here that repair such equipment.

Just re-align the trace -

But the elctrons will dribble out of the back onto the bench :)

If you have more than one lab bench in use, some rack mount scopes can be helpful, even stacked up three high... At one of my two benches, I have a 2230 DSO on the left on an adjustable shelf, plus a rack mount R7903 on the shelf above that, and a 7844RM right on top of it. Below the shelf at the left is a lower than lab bench height desktop with computers on it, and connections from them to the bench flow easily under the scopes. I can't see all the scopes from a sitting position, but I have my lab benches chest high for standing work, and a normal height desktop adjacent.

The 7844 is a four slot rackmount shape...about as fast as a 7904 too...

PS My other bench has a 7904A.

Rubber Feet

Who in TekScopes was it that offered rubber feet for scopes. I think it was
Howard something, but I do not have his last name or email address. I need
some more scope feet.

Re: TDS540 - replaced caps but beeper stuck on and clock issue?

Hi Stephen,
?
Thanks for the info.
?
I'm not sure what Tekronix was thinking with a clock that needs to be reset every time you power up - seems pretty useless to me.
?
I'll try cleaning and recapping the front panel next.

David.

Hello David,

I'm fairly sure that all the original TDS520/540/620/ 640/820 series do
not have battery backed real-time clocks. The time is kept in
non-volatile memory but not updated while powered down. You need to
set the time each time you power up. (I know, I have to do this on my
TDS820).

The TDS500/600/700 A,B,C and D series had battery backed RTCs.

Another issue is that the internal batteries in the non-volatile
components are eventually going to fail. They are supposed to have a
life of around 10+ years, however I think a lot of these are now well
over this. Do you know what the date code is on the DS1245Y-120?

As for the piezo beeper, I'm not sure, however it is on the front
panel PCB which you haven't done yet...

Regards,
Stephen.

Hi all,

I just finished replacing all the electroytic caps on CPU and
Acquisitions boards in my TDS540 (did not do front panel yet). I also
replaced a couple of TL074's that had a bunch of electrolyte
underneath them.

It now powers up and reliably passes the power on self test. I ran
the I/O cal routine and it calibrated without issue as well. In fact I
have checked everything I can think of and it all appears to be
working very well except.....

The beeper stays on continually. Also, the clock is not working
correctly. I can set and it runs fine but when I power down and power
up again (a few minutes later) it appears that the clock did not
continue to run when powered down. It does not default to year ~2002
(build date) - it remembers the time when powered down and picks up
where it left off when powered up again! When I press diplay time it
tells me that the clock is not updating when powered downand to run
the setup utility to set the time.

The scope is remembering time and appears to be storing calibration
values ok (when powered down). But the clock does not continue to run
when powered down and the beeper is stuck on.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
David.

2430A CCD and PA fail... bad NVRAM?

synthmdl76

Hello all... here is the issue.

I bought it on ebay and recieved it and it worked fine. I looked in
the help log and it stated 430hrs run time.... yes low, but I dont
think it was true.

after 2 days I powered it up and got a fail on the ccd during the self
test.
It was a 7430 /ccd/pd-offset/ch2-1 to be exact. Ran the ext diag and
then got a CCD Fail and a PA fail.
I let the unit run for a 0.5 hours or so and did a run test (ext diag)
till passes during this time and the unit finally passed.

turned the unit off (let it cool overnight) and powered it back up
today and I got a CKSUM-NVRAM fail with many of the self
test(1000-8000) blank (untested). I wound guess theyre blank because
the scope did not run these test because it relies on values stored in
ram (from what Ive read in this group).

I let the scope warm back up for a few minutes, re-ran the ext diag
and all passed (including the nvram) but the 7430 CCD/PD-OFFSET/CH2-1
which failed. The 8132 /PA/OFFSET/ENV-SP-SLOW CH2 was failing a bit
for the first few minutes but now passes.

I have also noticed during the self test the crt display flicker
slightly. I wonder if this is normal or if the caps in the power
supply may be bad as I guess is common on a unit this age.

Now the thing is... even with these errors I can still use the scope,
both channels and it seems to work fine. All I use it for is my DIY
synthesizer build to see if Im getting signals where I should (nothing
precise).

My question is I wonder if I have a bad DS1230AB NVRAM (bad battery
to be exact) and not a bad CCD and PA that are causing these errors?

FS: 310A and 317 scopes

Several years ago I was bitten by the Tekscope bug and eventually
accumulated fourteen different scopes. I finally realized that
many of them just sit around looking nice and gathering dust, so
would like to sell some. The big 5's just cost too much to ship
nowadays so I'm probably stuck with them (I also have a nice 515A
I'm not using if anyone's interested).

Anyhow the 310A and the 317 are both working (see pics).

(I cleaned the storage dust and dirt off them after taking the
calibrator trace pics. They aren't rusty).

I'll throw in the P6027 (1X probe) that came with the 310A.

The 317 is missing the right cabinet panel and I don't have a
spare power cord for it. Otherwise complete.

Please make reasonable offers ("silent auction") before I put them
on that auction place. Shipping on your dime from zip 65775 (US).

thanks
Charles
