Tek 576 vs 577

Basically, the 576 is 7000 technology, the 577 is 5000.
The 576 is bigger, MUCH heavier, and capable of more test current. The 577 has opamp and voltage regulator test fixtures which (I think) the 576 lacks. Either is a fine choice IMO. -John Hello! After some time looking around, I have finally bought a 577/D1 curve tracer with the standard 177 fixture. I wonder which are the differences with the more expensive 576. What would I be missing? Triggering is from an internal TV sync separator and the graticle is likely an IRE scale. There are filters in the vertical channel so you can look at the full signal, luminance, and chrominance (wideband, LP, 3.58 BP). -John |

The Tektronix 528 waveform monitor is used in the TV industry to monitor the video waveform. The scope is graduated in IRE. A proper waveform will have 100 IRE of video and 40 IRE of sync. The scope can display two frames of video (what we normally leave ours set at) or a single frame of video. You can use the scope to tell if the video frequency response of the device that the scope is monitoring is correct. It gives an indication of the chroma level. The only use I know of for the scope is to monitor video. The scope is fairly old. The CRT is unique to this scope. I work at a TV station and use different vintage waveform monitors at the station. For starters , do a search in the Tekscopes archives for a a long email thread on washing and baking old scopes to get the grime out . It may be as far back as two years ago but there was a lot of discussion. Next I would carefully remove and mark the locations of all the tubes, find a friend with a tube tester and test all the tubes ... Once you have a clean dry scope and a good set of tubes time to start tracing the circuits for bad electrolytic.. Many will suggest that you just replace them all :-) Does the filament on the CRT glow ? Tek 492 SA experts, can you answer these questions?

I'm learning my way around the 492 and don't yet have manuals for it.
(I'd rather get print manuals than a CD copy...got a set for sale?) I'd like to be able to use the 492 as a receiver for AM and FM transmissions, to be able to hear them. My 492 has options 1,2, and 3, so the only IF option I have to work with is the 10 MHz IF output. I need to know what are the output specs for the IF output, so I can determine how much gain I'm going to need. I plan to preamplify the IF output, feed it through a detector/demodulator, and then need to add more gain to bring it up to a level suitable for further processing, including audio band filtering and level adjustment. I would PRESUME that the correct mode to run in will be zero span, is this right? Not having actually used an analyzer in this application before, I'd appreciate it if anyone could give me a how-to guide on the setup and configuration of the analyzer and outboard equipment. If I'm wrong about how to do it, I'd rather know before I get started. CJ |
old fashioned 535 - first start after 35 years

Hi,
now I finished the repair of this pretty old scope. I switched on and was afraid of getting "flames" out of it. This didn't happen but even after 10 minutes running no beam appeared on the tube. Since the servicemanual describe resistors and capacitors with it's number within the system the reality looks different. I cannot measure neither 9kv voltage nor I can find the correct part cause the scope is pretty dirty inside. Any hints where to look first ? Thanks, Michael |
Photo captioning contest and trip report
Hi everyone,
Thanks to all of you who responded to the photo captioning challenge. I have decided to award BOTH prizes, first place gets their choice and second gets the other. One prize was a new set of 1x-10x probes and the other was a copy of the 30 minute Tektronix movie " A World of Measurements" on DVD. When I get home in a week I will get my wife to pick the two best and let everyone know. I plan to run this challenge frequently, so if you have a picture begging for a caption email it to tekstore@... and I may use it. I may add a prize for pictures used too. We are still in California having a good time and not shovelling snow! We are in San Jose now, after 2 weeks in LA. I have filled the car up with more scopes than it can hold. A 545B, a 564, an 11801, a DSA602A and an 11401 so far. If you see a couple of suitcases on the side of the freeway, it means I found one more! LOL I was able to visit Deane Kidd's fabulous parts depot (Thanks Deane) and enjoy Dennis Tillman's hospitality. Julian Bunn gave us a nice tour at Caltech and bought lunch. And yes Julian, we did get on the tour at JPL. Unfortunately we do have to return home to the cold and rain. My thanks to all those who have tried to contact me or bought stuff from our store while we are away. I plan to include a bonus with each item that you have been waiting patiently for when I ship in about 1 week. Enjoy the Superbowl. This is the first time I will see it from a US location. Neat! SC 501 sync

I have an SC501 that has poor sync. The unit works better at Usec settings than Millisec settings. I can swap U200 with a unit that works good and see no improvement. I can set 2 units side by side on extenders and compare voltages and waveforms and not see anything suspicously different between the two. One is stable and locked, the other is very, very, close but not stable. When the sync on the bad unit is at it's most stable point, the blanking output slows dramatically and the screen flickers. The power supply voltages are good with no apparent ripple. The Msec timing cap, C230 measures the same on both units(0.987uf and 1.02uf). I am attaching the schematic for the U200 circuit. Suggestions are welcome. I would love to see a datasheet for U200. It is a Tektronix made IC, pn 0155-0055-00. Jerry |

Most of them were push-on SMB connections. After tightening them all up, all the birdies flew away. :) My 492 has mod UB and kit KE/FE installed. Would you happen to know what those are? What's the lowest power signal that this should be able to resolve at minimum span, max resolution, and with the minimum noise filter engaged and with video filtering set to narrow? I'm asking because whatever it is, my HP 8640B won't go that low, even at its -130dBM range with the vernier turned down all the way. I'm impressed! CJ |
465M -5V PSU

Since I had to pull the main board out I replaced all the Caps at one time the two 18000 UF and the 1000UF with newer style electrolytics I have a Sencor at work and will test the old ones monday. Good news no somke appeared but no -5V either. According to the manual I downloaded from BAMA p4-28, I have found the problem lives in these three or four parts the rest seem to be resistor. I am also seeing 10vac on the +5 lug with my DVM no AC on the 32V. U762 Opamp, Q762 and Q766 and Q768 I do have a good output DC 5 and 32 volt supplies. I am seeing +3/4V at the neg test point and shows 1V on ththe A/C scale. It would be really helpful if I had a schematic of the PSU or some more advice. I am thinking on taking those two new caps in to test on Monday. Any advice 100 % welcome, Charles |

CRT Feasability

I would like to adapt a 5441 Oscilloscope to a custom application.
The fabrication is straight forward. However, the CRT is just WAY TO BIG. With all of the mechanical concerns satisfied, would it be feasable to adapt, say, the SC503 CRT for such an application? The biggest question is, "Will the SC503 CRT be FAST enough for the writing speeds, both storage and non-storage, for the 5441?"; you see the SC503 as a mainframe is rated to 10 MHz, I believe, and the 5441, 60. I do know that the CRT in my 7704A and the spare CRT I keep are the same as that used in the 7904A. In addition, the SC502 and SC504 share the same CRT. I'd just like to know that I'd work before I start looking around for a SC503 or worse, start butchering one! I do have the 5441 and really like it as storage scopes go. It's really small compared to my 7704A! Looking ahead, what would some of the modifications that I'd have to make? On which specifications should I be focusing? THANKS GROUP: THE TM5515 is a go! |

++++++++++ I have a Tektronics type 547 scope that my wife is making me get rid of because it is taking up too much of her precious space. As much as I want to keep it I was wondering if I was to dismantle it would the be anything in it that would be of any use in a radio project? Feel free to post it, though I can't believe anyone would want to buy it as shipping would probably be more than it's worth.
