Hi Jared , thank you for your response . I have tried looking for any posts from anyone that has actually done it for a very early TDS744 . Mine seems to be late in the production or has been hardware upgraded - no electrolytics on the acq pcb all decoupling caps are ceramic -- even the 10uF caps and in felt pen on the pcb is a date in 1996 . As you discovered the pcb looks identical to the 744A pcb . I will have a good read at the link you provided and see if it helps .

If you try updating the firmware using this guide and the scope doesn't boot, you can always flash back to the original firmware (just remember to copy out the original firmware and NVRAM first!)
