Re: Tek 2440 initial troubleshooting

Hi,

I would definitely check the power supply first. These are notorious for
dead electrolytics. I have three 24xx DSOs, and all of their PSUs had to be
repaired, most of the secondary side caps were dried out or leaking. .
So I would first check the power supply voltages and ripple, that can be
easily done on the side panel test points. If they are right, then look at
the trigger leds, they flash out a n error code in case the scope cannot
boot up to a state where it has display. The codes are described in the
service manual.
If voltages are not right, then look at the PSU. There are test point on
the PSU too, and you can also disconnect the rest of the scope from the PSU
to see if there are any shorts on the boards pulling down the power rails.
Also look out for a pcb mounted fuse in some (maybe the 5V?) output of the
PSU. But my first suspect would be the capacitors. If any of they are bad,
just go ahead and replace all on the secondary side, do not forget the one
for the standby supply of the pwm controller chip. (Sorry, I don't have the
service manual at hand, so I cannot tell you component number, but it will
be evident from the schematics/theory of operations sections.) Whie you are
there, replace the smoke-bomb wifa X caps too...3

Also, it is sometimes easy for some of the board interconnect cables to
come loose, definitely check all of them.

Hi all,
Got a 2440 w/ attached Tekmate 2402A and the scope appears partially dead.
(I detached the Tekmate until the scope is up and running.)

S/N is B016685. Graticle lights up when the power button is depressed,
Trig'd/Ready/Arm and Slope +/- lights will flash momentarily then the top
two will remain lit after some relay cycling occurs. All three GPIB lights
are illuminated. There is no trace on screen. Pressing the various Trigger
Select buttons do not change Trigger parameters.
I'd read that the scope remembers its last state upon power-off and that
the Status/Select buttons could be pressed to bring up a 65% intensity
display. Tried that; no dice.
Is there something else I'm missing before I go diving into this thing and
examining the power supply? Seller advertised that it wouldn't power up,
though it has a calibration sticker with 9/26/18 affixed to the case...so
I'm assuming it worked as recently as last year.
Appreciate any tips.
...John...
