I was puzzled by your description of method (2), it seems to suggest that it is only the variable timebase knob which stops the shaft
from coming completely out of the scope. Is that really the case?
Yes, that is what I meant. If the B-shaft is no longer fixed inside the inner part of the B-drum, nothing's holding it and you can pull it out without problem.
The fact that apparently you can't means that the shaft is still fixed to the inner drum, so procedure 2. won't be possible.

The C-clip that you're referring to sits on the rear side of the B-drum, not on the shaft. During procedure 2 the rear (side of the) inner drum would have remained where it was of course.

At the moment, I can imagine three causes for your problem:

a. The inner B-drum can rotate with respect to the outer B-drum. This should not be possible and indicates damage somewhere between inner and outer B-drum. As I understand your situation, you can pull out the B knob (dark gray), which should be spring-loaded and would pull back. In this case, changing the B time would not be possible.

b. Only the click action while rotating of the B time base is lost. In that case, you could adjust B times without click. As I have understood, B times cannot be changed in your situation

c. The B knob slips on the shaft. It should be fixed quite tightly. Between the inside of the knob and the shaft is a sleeve with a lengthwise slot. It sometimes remains on the shaft when you remove the knob. If the sleeve is positioned at an incorrect angle inside the knob, the two screws inside the knob cannot exert enough pressure on the shaft, causing it to slip. That would be an easy one.
I prefer to position the two screws at opposite sides of the sleeve, so both "free" sides of the sleeve are pressing on the shaft's surface. increase the "grooving" on the shaft if you like.
