Newer systems use a recovery partition instead of a CD or DVD. But you can
make a bootable USB flash drive from the recovery partition, and you should
do that in case your hard drive fails. Windows will nag you periodically to
make one.

We have a Dell desktop at home too that recently had the hard disk
drive (HDD) die, taking Windows with it. Dell didn't ship the machine
with install/recovery disks, but _did_ send them to us after we called
them and insisted. We now have the proper disks to reinstall onto the
replacement HDD.

Anyone with a Dell without these disks should call Dell and insist
that they be sent to you! Sooner or later, you'll need them.
